Having Fun in the Snow with a Cast

By Tia Cristy

Having Fun in the Snow with a Cast.

So, a dear friend of mine has a child with a broken arm. The first major snow day came across the US this weekend. The sad child just wanted to play in the snow. So, I made a suggestion.

First, put a hat on the hand. Then, put a trash bag on the arm up to the shoulder, and tape loosely to secure the bag. Finally, wrestle on their jacket. If it’s too tight to get on, then, spare one of your coats. This will allow the child to get a little play time in, with the snow, without hurting the durability of the cast.

If it’s a broken leg, use the same concept with the trash bag up the leg. The hat will get wet before the cast if the bag should break. Tell your child to let you know if the hat gets wet. If desired, double up the trash bag, so no little holes will let water get in.

This a a good tip for any age that has a cast, yet needs to deal with the snow day. Remember, don’t work or play too hard for too long, the cold may cause pain in the limb later that day.

Help Reduce Static Shocks

Help Reduce Static Shocks.

It’s that time of year again, with the heat on and every metal you touch, gives you a slight jolt. There are a couple tips to reduce the static shocks you receive.

Tip 1, put used dryer sheets into your shoes or pockets to help reduce the friction you are picking up while walking.

Second tip, put a safety pin attached to your pants or shirt, where the metal is touching skin. It will help reduce the shock treatment.

These aren’t fool proof, but they will help in the reduction of zaps from static build up.

Do you Need Iron Supplements? Home Test.

Do you Need Iron Supplements? Home Test.

What is the point of taking iron? Well, iron is one element we can not live without. There are about 12 forms of iron, to help keep your hemoglobin and blood happy. Not every source of iron is absorbed the same way, for everyone. If you have a low reading on your hemoglobin, you maybe diagnosed with iron deficient anemia. Which will result in taking an iron supplement or in drastic cases a blood transfusion.

If you are feeling tired, sluggish, confused, have muscle spasms, a bluish tint to the whites of your eyes or a number of other symptoms, you will want to contact your doctor to have your iron levels tested as soon as possible. Iron deficiency is very serious, if unaddressed.

A great home test, that not many people know about, to self check your iron, is getting a piece of yellow gold, (doesn’t work with white unless you’re extremely deficient). It may seem crazy, but it really works.

Take the gold ring, with the flat of the band, apply a good amount of pressure while you run it down the side of your face. If it leaves noting but just a red mark from where you rubbed it you may be alright, but if you are having symptoms, still call your doctor. But, if it leaves behind a black line, you probably are deficient and are in need of iron. If you can make a black line appear on the arm, you are probably more deficient than you’d expect. So, be sure to contact your doctor to get the level tested asap.

As I said, not all iron absorbs the same way, some people reject certain forms and accept others. If you have a problem with iron absorption, you may have to see a hematologist for iron transfusions. There are many forms and methods for iron, and your doctor can help you achieve the proper results.

Quickie: Fill In a Cracked Vase.

Have you ever had a cracked colored, vase, where now that white line is exposed, for all to see?

Have you broken a vase and glued it back together, yet, the white lines are showing the repair?

Here’s tips to camouflage those white crack lines.

With a magic marker, hold the maker in the crack, so the ink will absorb into the porous area.

If the crack is too deep and the marker isn’t getting into the crack, try a nail polish color that is close to the right color.

And, if it’s ready for a face lift all together, make it a fun craft project, by adding new paint, designs and beads.
