Upgrading Your Home – Where To Invest Your Hard-Earned Cash

Upgrading Your Home – Where To Invest Your Hard-Earned Cash

No matter how long you live in a place, there is always something more that you want to do it. And over time it becomes necessary to make a few upgrades. But home ownership is also expensive. The kind of things that you need to upgrade won’t come cheap. If you’re not looking to sell anytime soon, you might be better off choosing upgrades that make your life more comfortable. It’s not just about adding profit to your place! If you want to invest your hard-earned cash on your home, why not try one of these upgrades?

Heating And Air Conditioning

While we all accept that these services are essential to our homes, not all of us consider upgrading the systems we have. However, it can be a good way to reduce the running cost of your home. Old boilers and dirty air con filters push the cost of electricity and gas higher and higher. And if they haven’t been regularly serviced, you may be risking an expensive repair bill. Have a look at websites like www.rockfordheating.com to see what your options might be. Replacing old heating or air con systems can ensure your family stay safe and healthy.

Windows And Doors

Over the years, wooden window frames and doors can weaken, warp, and even rot. Nothing lasts forever, so have a close inspection of your windows and doors. They are designed to keep the cold out and to ensure your home and family are secure and safe. If they’re no longer up to the job, it’s time to get them replaced. Modern standards of doors and windows are better and more secure. They may even keep more of the street noise and sun glare out of your home.

Wiring And Plumbing

Old houses are beautiful and elegant. They are architecturally elegant and help retain a positive memory of ages past. But original wiring and plumbing can be dangerous for you and your family. If you haven’t got the latest electrical systems supporting your modern appliances, you may be risking a fire. Have a look at websites like http://www.oldhouseweb.com/how-to-advice/electrical-issues-in-old-houses.shtml to find out what you can do. Pests over the years can chew and damage old wiring. And some old water pipes can contain harmful metals and contaminants. Make sure your electrical and plumbing systems are up to modern life with a complete replacement.

Chimneys And Roofs

It’s not often that we think about the roof. We can’t see it from the inside, and we rarely look up as we approach our own front door. Most roofs have a lifespan of just twenty-five years. Older roofs can start to weather and no longer provide the waterproofing your home needs. If you live in an area with cold winters, it’s worth upgrading your home insulation to prevent heat escaping here.

Have your chimney examined by a professional. If you use it, it should be swept every year. Some chimneys can be structurally damaged by storms. It’s important for safety that this is repaired urgently. A modern replacement may be possible. What will you upgrade in your home this season?

Addiction and Recovery: How Do You Know It’s Time To Seek Help?

Addiction and Recovery: How Do You Know It’s Time To Seek Help?

luck-1041798_960_720

Addiction is a serious condition. It occurs when someone either ingests a substance or carries out an activity that directly results in personal pleasure. Now, we all engage in activities that create a sense of happiness within ourselves. But addicts don’t know when to call it a day.

Someone is an addict if the pursuit of these pleasures begins to interfere with their day-to-day life. For example, work, family responsibilities, and personal relationships. Now, there is support out there for families like a support group for spouses of sex addicts or Al-Anon for families of alcoholics. But addicts don’t always realize it also becomes a problem when the behaviour is damaging to the individual’s health.

Unfortunately, many addicts don’t even realize how destructive their behaviour is. Both personally and interpersonally. Others will simply be in denial and make excuses for their behaviour. Some are open and honest but don’t have any intentions of altering their lifestyle.

When To Seek Help

If you are worried that you’re an addict or are concerned on behalf of a partner, relative, or friend, then it’s never too early to seek help. As soon as you notice dependence on physical stimulants or problematic self-conduct, it is time to search for some support and assistance. There are plenty of options. Remember, addiction isn’t necessarily to hard drugs. Common addictions include alcoholism, gambling, smoking, sex, and shopping. Don’t forget that addiction to prescription drugs also occurs. If you feel you are having problems when it comes to dependence on prescribed medication, talk to the GP prescribing it to you. There might be alternative options that will have less of a negative influence on your life.

Where To Seek Help

There are plenty of options when it comes to getting help with your addiction. Your GP will be able to advise you on whether you are an addict or not. However, if you are seeking a specialist, you might like to consider an addiction counselor. An addiction counselor is a professional individual who will listen to your concerns. They will help you in ways specifically tailored to you as an individual. If you find comfort in numbers, you could attend weekly recovery meetings and sessions. You will meet other people in the same situation as yourself. You’ll be able to provide one another with a strong support network. With other people who are in similar situations to you. If you’d rather not tackle the problem face-to-face with other people, then there is a seemingly endless number of helplines that deal with issues surrounding addiction.

Overcoming Denial

It is often said that the first step on the road to recovery is acceptance. If you are in denial about your addiction, you can’t begin to tackle the real problem. People often can’t be helped unless they want help. You can’t force an adult to seek professional help. Many addicts are embarrassed by themselves and ashamed of their behaviour. But it’s important to acknowledge that addiction isn’t a sign of weakness. It also doesn’t reflect an individual’s morals. You will not be judged for reaching out for a helping hand. Admitting that you need assistance with overcoming your addiction is a brave, strong, and bold move. It’s something to be applauded for, not condemned or shunned.

If you are worried about the effects that addiction may be having on your relationship, you may be worrying about other things that might be negative or damaging between you and your partner. Check out our article on common errors couples often make that lead to separation.

The Common Sense Approach That Will Allow You To Cut Your Winter Energy Bill In Half

The Common Sense Approach That Will Allow You To Cut Your Winter Energy Bill In Half

The weather has got cooler, the leaves are turning burnt orange, the nights are starting to draw in, winter is well and truly on the way. There are a lot of reasons that winter is a wonderful season, but high energy bills aren’t one of them. Come winter, most people’s energy bills skyrocket. As soon as the weather gets cold enough for the heating to go on, most people’s energy bills double, if not triple, in price.

Although many people expect higher energy bills in the colder months, that doesn’t have to be the case.  Believe it or not, your energy bill doesn’t have to rise just because the weather’s got colder. Or, at least, it doesn’t have to rise by a significant amount. Over the past few years, plenty of advancements have been made when it comes to saving energy, many of which you can easily implement in your home. All it takes is a common sense approach, and perhaps a little help from some smart technology, and you can cut your winter energy bill in half.

To do so, here’s everything that you need to know and do:

The common sense approach

Believe it or not, to reduce your home’s energy usage, a common sense approach is all it takes. When it comes to high energy bills, it’s the little things that make all the difference.

Turn your lights off. In the winter months, the days become darker and so, we tend to use our lights more and more. This leads to a spike in our energy usage, and consequently, the price of our energy bills. To prevent energy being used unnecessarily, only leave lights on as and when you are in that room. To keep energy usage to a minimum, use table lamps instead of overhead lights as much as possible. This will reduce the amount of energy you and your family are using each day.

Don’t leave devices plugged in. For some reason, a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that if a device is plugged in but isn’t being used, then it’s not using energy. However, that’s not actually the case. To prevent devices like TVs and computers from sucking in energy when not in use, you need to disconnect the plug from the wall. Otherwise, they will constantly use power, without you even realising it.

Set your heating to come on at certain times. In the winter months, one of the biggest drains on electricity is heating. Far too many people leave their home’s heating on constant, without realising just how much energy this actually uses. The best thing to do is set your heating to come on only at certain times of day, such as early in the morning and later on in the evening. That way your home will still be nice and warm, but you won’t be hit with a huge energy bill.

The technology that can help

Technology really is amazing. There are various gadgets and gizmos that can effectively help you to cut your energy usage and save yourself money each month.

Smart thermostats. Over the past few years, a range of smart thermostats have been developed. These really are incredible resources, as they allow you to manage your home’s heating from anywhere via an app on your smartphone. Designs like the Honeywell WiFi Thermostat, for instance, come with a range of features. These are all things that make it quicker and easier to ensure that your heating is only on as and when you need it to be. You can turn the thermostat up or down from anywhere. You can set your heating to come on at various times throughout the day, and can even select a temperature that it should come on at. You can set your thermostat to turn off when your home reaches a certain temperature. In every sense of the word, modern thermostats are incredibly smart.

Energy usage monitors. These clever devices allow you to keep track of exactly how much energy you’ve used. As well as what the cost will be for the month’s bill. This means that it’s much easier to keep track and reduce your spending as and when you need to. There smart devices can even be used to alert you if your energy usage looks unusual. If you receive an alert, this probably means that you’re using a lot more energy than you normally would do.

Solar technology. Over the past ten years or so, solar technology has come a long way. Admittedly, it might be something that’s expensive to invest in. But as it can save you a lot of money in the long-run, it’s definitely worthwhile looking into. By swapping to using solar energy to heat your home, you can significantly reduce your monthly energy bill. Or potentially, get rid of it completely. You could even end up making money from your solar panels by selling energy that you don’t use back to the national grid. That’s right, a lot of people with solar powered homes do this. The great thing about solar power is that not only can it save you money but it can also help you to earn extra money. It’s just a case of being willing to make the initial investment.

Each and every winter, in homes across the country, energy bills rise significantly. For many families, this can cause a real problem, especially when money is tight. The good news, however, is that by taking the common sense approach and being willing to invest in smart technology, energy bills can be kept low. An initial investment may be needed, but the amount of money it will save you in the long-run makes it more than worth it.

Believe it or not, it’s the little things that make all the difference when it comes to how much energy you’re using. But by taking note of the tips and suggestions above, you can make it much easier and less stressful to reduce your winter energy usage. Thus, saving yourself money on the cost of your energy bills.

Everything You Need To Know About Your Rights At Work

Everything You Need To Know About Your Rights At Work

There are many rights which we are entitled to while we are at work. These have been put in place by many different organizations over the years so that we can work without being exploited. Even though these are crucial to many employees, hardly anyone knows exactly what they are entitled to at work. In this blog post, I’ll go over some of the most basic occupational rights and what you should do if you think your employer isn’t offering them to you.

Wages

All employees are entitled to fair pay, no matter what type of job they do. In the UK, the national minimum wage is £7.20 for everyone over the age of twenty-five. The U.S. varies by state. Are you suspicious that your employer isn’t paying you this? You should ask to see your contract. In this, it should stipulate your hourly wage. If you are being paid less than the minimum wage, you should speak to your employer. They may not be aware that they are underpaying you. However, if they refuse to do anything about it, you should take your employer to an employment tribunal.

Holiday Pay

Every employee who works in a full-time job is entitled to at least 5.6 weeks of holiday leave each year. This holiday leave will be fully paid by your employer. Bear in mind that if you work part-time, this holiday leave will be provided on a pro-rata basis. You can choose when to take your holiday days. Don’t think your employer is giving you enough holiday leave? Then you should contact your local citizen’s advice bureau. They can talk you through the next steps.

Sick Leave And Pay

If you ever fall sick or need to take time off after an accident, you are entitled to employee sick leave and pay. You are entitled to statutory sick pay if you are employed full-time and are sick for four or more days in a row. You will also need to have already worked at least one full day for your employer before you can claim sick leave and pay. Remember that this only covers you for a certain period of time. If you need to take more time off work due to illness, you might have to take unpaid holidays. Are you not sure whether you should go back to work once your sick leave is up? Then you could see about getting occupational health assessments by Health Assured.

The Right To Ask For Flexible Working

Did you know that once you have worked at a company for more than twenty-six weeks, you can ask for time off for training? You need to work in a company that employs at least 250 employees, though. As long as the training will improve your work within the company, your boss will likely agree. Especially as it is one of your basic rights at work!

It really benefits to know what rights you are entitled to at work. Both you, your colleagues, and your company will benefit!
