Treating yo’self has become a bit of a thing in recent years. We are all told to treat ourselves to something nice, whether it be a chocolate cupcake, a day at the local spa, or a brand new outfit from that fancy new store. But, is the concept of treating ourselves one that we should be embracing? Absolutely!

If you are one of those people who is always reluctant to treat yourself because the money could be better spent elsewhere or because you are reluctant to be so indulgent, you might want to have a rethink because, not only do you deserve a nice treat now and again, but treating yourself could actually be good for you health in a number of ways, as you will see below.

It can boost self-compassion

Treating yourself is a good way of showing self-compassion, and we need self-compassion for our mental wellbeing. Those of us who treat ourselves like we matter are less likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and various other mental health issues and less likely to struggle with our imperfections. So, have that piece of chocolate or buy that cute new dress and don’t stress about it at all!

It can help us to relax

There is an epidemic of stress in the modern world with many of us struggling to get through the working week without feeling like our nerves are on edge and we can not take much more. Treating ourselves, whether it be to the best cigars we can find or a fun city break, is a good way to blow off steam, relax a little and release some of the stresses and tensions that have built up over time.

It can encourage moderation

Sometimes, treating yourself occasionally can help you to be moderate in your behaviors. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, you could ban chocolate, chips, and sodas from your diet completely, but if you do that, then the temptation could be too much and you might end up bingeing. However, if you know that you can have a small treat of cake or chocolate once a week, you are less likely to feel deprived and less likely to end up going overboard when you cannot keep the cravings at bay any longer.

It can boost your mood

If you are suffering from a low mood or depression, then it is often the little things that can give your mood a lift. Having a cupcake or watching a favorite show will not cure you of your mental illness, but it will probably give you a little dopamine hit that will make you feel better in the short term at least. Treats yourself regularly and you may start to feel a whole lot better over time.

As you can see, treating yourself is not only a nice thing to do, but it is also very necessary for your health and wellbeing, so how will you treat yourself today? Cake? New shoes? A trip with friends?
