The Many And Varied Benefits of Caring

The Many And Varied Benefits of Caring

If there’s a question that that best symbolizes humanity at its worst, it’s “who cares?â€. It’s a question most often spoken by those interested only in themselves with a fundamental lack of respect and regard for the world and the people around them. Don’t be too harsh on them, though. Look around and you’ll see that we don’t inhabit a society that’s conducive to caring. We’re almost pre-programmed by society to be selfish and insulated.

Most of us walk around with headphones stuffed into our ears or heads bowed as we consume the world through the screens on our smartphones. We live in the age of consumerism where we equate happiness with owning stuff and self-cherishment is the ultimate pursuit. From a young age, we’re conditioned to be rampant individualists, striving for our own betterment and educational / career advancement at the expense of all others.

Social media has made everyone the star of their own reality TV show. We’ve stopped looking at ourselves as people and started looking at ourselves as a brand, as a marketable commodity. In an age of unparalleled interconnectivity, we’ve never been more alone.

This is a shame, because chasing possessions and social media ‘likes’ is an ultimately hollow pursuit. It’s caring for others that really gives us value. There are many ways to care for others, from giving to charity to caring for an elderly relative to choosing a career in public service such as teaching, childcare or nursing. The benefits of caring are rich and varied both to the individual and to society as a whole.

The social benefits of caring

Altruism has helped us to grow and evolve as a species. We’ve been looking out for each other since the dawn of humanity, so there’s no reason to stop now. Caring for others, through charitable donations or volunteering helps to protect the most vulnerable in society. It also allows caring people to lead by example, leading to the eventual betterment of society. Moreover, caring for others helps people to like and value you in more meaningful ways than digital hearts and thumbs on a social media platform. Demonstrating caring traits to your children (to them and others), will allow them to see the real-terms benefits of caring. They’ll see the positive impact you have on the lives of others and will grow up wanting to emulate this. This means that you will be giving your kids the inside track when it comes to their interpersonal relationships and emotional health. As we get older, we can find ourselves isolated and depressed unless we form caring, meaningful relationships with others earlier on in life.

The emotional and psychological benefits of caring

Caring for others makes us feel better. Whatever your religious or philosophical persuasion, there’s no doubt that you’ll have been versed in the benefits of caring for others. For all the societal benefits of caring, in whatever form it may take, there are scientifically proven emotional and psychological benefits too.  Studies have shown that people who were ‘intrinsically motivated’ (motivated by a desire to do good rather than being encouraged to by a teacher, parent, partner or career advisor) to help others through small acts of altruism or organized voluntary activities demonstrated greater psychological and emotional well being than their peers who did not.

This is because doing good positively affects our brain chemistry. Good deeds stimulate the mesolimbic system, which is the portion of the brain that distributes feelings of reward. This also causes the brain to release feel-good chemicals resulting in what some psychologists call the “helper’s highâ€. It’s a neurochemical response that is encouraged to perpetuate good deeds.

Compare that to the countless tales of depressed wealthy and successful people that we hear regularly. These are people who have succeeded on the terms that society has dictated, yet still feel sad and empty inside. This is because wealth and the superficial trappings of success are meaningless in and of themselves. We’re conditioned to chase consumer products to distract ourselves from how fundamentally unhappy we are with society’s little arrangement and even when we’ve successfully navigated the road to success, we still feel hollow.

The health benefits of caring

Altruism doesn’t just positively affect your brain chemistry, it improves your overall health too. Heck, it can even help you lose weight. Don’t believe me? Read on! Careers that revolve around the care of others, such as nursing, tend to be very active roles that are more conducive to general health than sedentary desk bound jobs but the health benefits don’t stop there. Charitable or altruistic work can counteract the damaging effects of stress.

In a 2013 study by the United Health Group 78 percent of participants who volunteered over a 12-month period said that they felt their charitable activities lowered their stress levels. This is because good deeds stimulate our body’s production of oxytocin, the “compassion hormone,†which counteracts the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol makes us store fat around our bellies, hence why altruistic acts can actually help you lose weight.

The career benefits of caring

Caring can not only be a wonderful and rewarding pastime, it can be a rewarding and enjoyable career. We’re unfortunately conditioned to chase unrewarding, stressful and irritating yet highly paid jobs in order to chase status symbols like expensive clothes and flashy cars as we neglect what’s far more important… Job satisfaction! Nursing is just one example of an emotionally rewarding career that not only provides job satisfaction and security, but great opportunities for progression, diversification and education that few can compete with. Why earn a Masters Degree in Nursing Administration? Because it can lead to roles in management, leadership and sharing your knowledge and experience with others, allowing you opportunities to help peers through coaching and mentoring. That’s twice the altruistic benefits!

So, who cares?

Now we come back to that first question of “who cares?â€. As we move towards a new decade, we need to readdress what we value as a society, thinking twice about the money and status symbols we so desperately crave and pursue more beneficial, more altruistic attitudes.  So hopefully, one day, everybody will care.

Overcoming Addiction: How To Help A Friend In Need

Overcoming Addiction: How To Help A Friend In Need

Addiction is a disease. It is an ailment that only those who have a predisposition to allowing their addictive personalities take charge can fully understand and relate to. It doesn’t matter if the addiction is to food, drugs, alcohol, gambling or extreme exercise, the impact on the addict’s life and the lives of those around them can be profound for all involved. Witnessing a loved one or a friend in the throes of addiction can be heartbreaking, and it can be impossible to know what to do for the best. All you want to do is help, to get your friend back on the right path and enable them to see how worthwhile their life is without the need for their addiction. Take a look at these tips to help you help a friend in need.

Listen

If your friend is willing to talk, take this as a positive sign. Addicts tend to isolate themselves even from those who they love and care about the most. If your friend is eager to talk to you, even if it is not about anything remotely linked to their addiction, be willing to listen. Be the shoulder that they can cry on, the sounding board to voice their ideas and the impartial person who they can vent their anger at.

It’s vital that your friend understands that you have their best interests at heart. As they become more comfortable talking to you, they may open up about their feelings towards their addiction but be wary of the terminology you use. They may not use the word addiction and may simply refer to their dependency on drugs, alcohol or gambling as a problem. The word ‘addiction’ can be terrifying for an addict making them feel shame, anger, and negative self-worth. Just being there to listen to your friend may be enough in the first instance.

A Need For Understanding

The idea that you can just say to your friend who is an addict that they should ‘look on the bright side’ or that they ‘don’t know how lucky they are’ is oversimplifying the situation and shows your lack of understanding for their addiction. What your friend is going through is acutely traumatic and emotional. Don’t belittle their addiction through the use of platitudes. Your friend may retreat further and be unwilling to address their problems.

Facilitation Is Not The Answer

Your friend may be in the depths of an addictive episode when they come to you for help. Your idea of help is to see them in a rehabilitation program. Their idea of help is $20 to secure their next fix of an illegal substance. Don’t give in, however tempting it may be. Your friend is not the same person as they were before the addiction. Their impulsive craving for their vice has altered their personality to try and manipulate you into giving them what they want. Be the best friend that you can be and say no, however heartbreaking this may be.

Rehabilitation Is The Answer

Only when you sense that your friend is ready for external help, can rehabilitation be successful. It may be your friend who initiates a conversation with you to seek help. You can investigate which recovery center is the most appropriate for your friend. Think about the programs that they offer, the support they provide and the after care guidance that they will continue to give.

It’s important to realize that the hardest part may not yet have come on their road to recovery. Addicts must confront many demons before embarking on their new sober, addiction free lives. You may need to take a step back and allow them to confront their issues on their own with specialist help. Just make your friend aware that you will be waiting for them when their period of rehabilitation is over.

There may be some blips and relapses along the way. This is normal, but if your friend is still willing to admit their issues with addiction, they can continue on their road to recovery.

Only when your friend has completed their rehabilitation and is settling into their addiction free life, will they realize the impact that their addiction has had on you. Being a strong and stable figure in your friend’s life while they try to overcome addiction can be one of the most challenging things you ever have to undertake, but if you stick with it, you can help turn your friend’s life around.

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY WITH A HECTIC SCHEDULE

By Guest Blogger, Sara

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY WITH A HECTIC SCHEDULE

You have kids to look after and workload to deal with; I get how busy life is! You might not even be able to take out two minutes for yourself, let alone planning out a proper diet chart and heading out to the gym. However, we need to understand how important it is to relax the body and mind and to look after our health more than anything else, while this seems nearly impossible for some.

I have gathered a few simple steps following which you can achieve better physical and mental health without putting too much time or efforts into them. So, read through and thank me later:

  1. Keep a Fruit Basket on the Table

Keeping the fruit basket on your table benefits you greatly and saves the fruit from getting bad and wasted. Your dining table is the most accessible place where you your meals and keeping a fruit bowl on it means easy access to a healthy snack. You can always pick your favorite fruit from the basket and carry it with you while heading out too.

  1. Keep a Water Bottle with You

Water intake is highly important and yet many of us don’t drink it enough just because it is not around. Keeping a water bottle with you all the time will increase your intake greatly. Squeezing a lemon into it can be even more beneficial for detoxification of the body. Make sure you carry the bottle around with you and finish it twice. This will not only keep your body hydrated but also benefit your skin greatly, flushing all the harmful toxins out of the body.

  1. Get in Bed with No Gadgets Nearby

Phones and other gadgets can be a great distraction from getting a good sleep, especially when you are a workaholic. We all know how important a good night’s sleep is and major problems like anxiety, indigestion and lack of focus are a caused by lack of proper sleep. Therefore, I would suggest you to power off your gadgets before you head to bed. Also, keeping a good full-body massage chair in your home and spending 15 minutes on it before you head to bed can improve your sleep and relax your mind greatly. Doing so will also relieve you of the stress that relates to your work or family.

  1. Never Skip Breakfast

No matter how much hurry you are in, do not skip breakfast. Breakfast is the main meal which keeps you up and running throughout the day without getting tired, lazy and stressed out. Have some quick and healthy options at hand for breakfast like fresh juice, fruit, oats and Greek yoghurt.

  1. Quick Morning Exercise

Instead of rushing to the bathroom as you wake up, get out of bed and warm your body up a little with a quick workout. Make sure you set your alarm for 15 minutes earlier than you are supposed to wake up. This way, your body will be much more active and your mind refreshed throughout the day.

This is Why Your Brain Can’t Function without Sleep

This is Why Your Brain Can’t Function without Sleep

Young man covering face with hand

Your brain is a complex system with just as many neurons in it as the number of stars in our entire galaxy. Each neuron is connected to others through a whopping 40,000 connections referred to as synapses by medical professionals. And yet, for many of us, it is the most overlooked organ in the body.

More than the body, it is the brain that needs sleep. All your body organs are cleaned of toxins and metabolites while they’re in their normal function throughout the day. It is the brain which has to wait for when you’re asleep to have its cleaning done. There’s other important stuff your brain needs to do while sleeping as well, which has bearing on your memory, health and immunity. Why then do we skip sleep?

Superstitions of Self Denial

A common motif in the annals and accounts of success has been that of spending nights in motivated labor. It’s only too visible in pop culture, for example, when Will Smith puts the kid to bed but works the entire night to correct a malfunctioning machine he intends to sell. Or, when in the legend of Achilles in the Iliad, he spends the night awake, plotting for revenge. We’ve never stopped to ask why we buy these myths. The Romans had a famous distaste for sleep, considering it a state of absolute debilitation and something to avoid to as much extent as possible.

It seems to be our hunger for success that makes us believe we can make hard sacrifices from our sleep to chase an ungraduated goal. “Well, as you know, there are 24 hours in every day. And if that’s not enough, you’ve always got the nights!â€, as Ronald Graham the famous mathematician says. And yet, as we make cuts from our 24 hour day, we never have a quantified measure of success. Is $2400 a day a measure of success? Is it the awe of getting 24 people in the course of a day? Or are we chasing an elusive goal of paying off our debts in 24 months? If the answer to all these questions is no, what really are we chasing?

How poor sleep routs the brain

Despite no graduated standards, we deny ourselves sleep. If you skip an hour of sleep 5 days a week (and no, there’s no such thing as making up for it over the weekend), you’ve lost over a month’s worth of sleep at the end of the year. You can be sure it is detrimental to the brain.

To know what happens when you don’t sleep, let me tell you why the brain needs sleep.

  1. The brain generates toxins and metabolites like any other organ in the body during its course of activities throughout the day. While other organs can be cleaned by the body anytime, the brain gets its only major cleanup while you’re asleep. This is because sleeping allows brain activity to calm down and brain cells to shrink a bit. More ugly stuff can be washed out of the brain, and your brain doesn’t have to fight against this garbage to function the next day.
  2. A crucial part of memory retaining is the transfer of information from short term to long term memory, which, you guessed it, only happens when you’re asleep. Your brain sorts out information it gathered through the day and puts what’s important in long term memory, the rest being discarded. Without sleep, you’re going to have a hard time remembering things.
  3. Research shows your brain cannot make new brain cells to replace the dead ones when you’re sleep deprived. Take out neurons little by little for each day you spend in sleep deprivation, and suddenly the high number of nerve cells doesn’t seem all that insurmountable.
  4. Without adequate replenishment and cleaning, your brain as well as body are fighting a losing battle. Sleep and immune function are closely related, as studies point out. Low sleep means you’re going to be more susceptible to coughs and colds, as well as more dire infections. With disease comes monetary and mental exertion, which results in stress and further lack of sleep, making a self perpetuating cycle.

It’s not always your fault either. It can be the traffic on the street outside your house that’s keeping you from sleeping well with its noise, or the nightclub nearby. Many have trouble logging off the internet, and so their minds are alert to the sounds of any vibrations or notification tones it might hear, even in sleep. Sometimes, it might just be a smelly or dented mattress that’s not keeping you comfortable while you sleep, or the temperature of the room that’s all wrong.

Urgent Corrections to Follow

It can be hard to follow the 8 hour schedule, especially since it is not valid for everyone’s bodily needs. Just as many people wake up groggy from too much sleep as those who wake up under-rested. A rule of thumb is to allow yourself to wake up when you’re satisfied with your sleep. If you wake up groggy or have a slow brain day more often than twice a week, it can be that you’re not well rested.

Get thick blinds and invest in soundproofing to keep the outside noise outdoors. Clean your existing mattress or buy a better one you will easily get various mattress reviews online. Set the thermostat to a temperature your body is comfortable with when it’s resting. You can crank it up or down later. Most importantly, switch to airplane mode before flying off to dreamland.

Your brain needs its sleep to keep your body in order, as well as to make sure you don’t lose your job due to low performance, get a bad cold or get long term illnesses like depression or Alzheimer’s. It is worth the time to get adequate sleep.

How to Prepare for Retirement

By Blogger Jenny H.

How to Prepare for Retirement

For many, a simple retirement is the ultimate goal: a white picket fence, children and grandchildren who visit occasionally, a garden that you can take pride in. But it always seems so far away. When it starts to creep closer, certain fears can start to take hold, and we forget to see it for the enjoyable experience it is. However, if we start to prepare for it mentally and financially, retirement can be the ultimate reward for years of hard work and perseverance.

Financial implications

Although we would all like to think of ourselves as being happy and healthy well into our golden years, this may sadly not always be the case. Levels of care will vary from person to person, so it is important you know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, and what exactly it is you need help with.

Although the idea of having constant room for family is wonderful, a large home can become difficult to manage in later years and could limit some autonomy. It is important to consider buying a smaller home that you can more easily manage in order to keep the independence that is important to so many.

  • Mortgage repayments

Whether you need to remortgage a current property or create a new one, your age will be a factor for some companies. It would be wise to receive professional help from advisors to ensure you are getting the best possible deal for you.

Mentally preparing

Pottering around in the garden can be wonderful, though you are somewhat limited by the weather. While this is ideal as a summer activity, what you will do to pass the time during other seasons should be taken into consideration. For some, hobbies become their “new jobâ€. This could be something as simple as collecting pennies, or as complex as buying old, decrepit cars, fixing them up, and selling them on. Whatever you choose to focus on, it is important that you find it enjoyable and that there is no pressure.

Enjoy yourself

The most important thing to remember is that you have worked hard for retirement and it is there for you to enjoy, so always make the most of it.
