The Privilege Of Spontaneity

The Privilege Of Spontaneity

pexels-photo-4Image source

Spontaneity is one of the greatest things any of us can ever allow ourselves the pleasure of doing. Most of the time, being spontaneous really means being random, but being random is fine. It is more than fine. Life is so focused around routines that it is no wonder more people don’t go mad. We go from school to college to work to retirement. We set our alarms at 6.30am every day, leave the house 8am, get to work at 8.45, go to Subway for lunch, leave work at 6pm, have dinner at 7.30pm, watch our favorite Netflix show and go to bed at 10pm. That is the humdrum noise of so many lives, lives full of stress; so why not be a little bit spontaneous. Better yet, be spontaneous with your best friend.

This could be your wife or husband. It could be your college roommate. It could be anyone, but be spontaneous with them. Doing it alone is amazing in the sense that you have done it alone and learned something new about yourself. But doing it with a friend brings that element of silliness into it, that little bit of fun that doesn’t get allowed out when it is just you. But what random spontaneous things can you do?

Well, chances are you have resisted the urge to do a lot of these in the past, so next time you feel that bubbling energy that says “do it, do it, do it†why not give in and have a laugh. You’ll feel so much better after a good ab-aching giggle. Trust us.

Spread Happiness

Speak to random people, but do it with an infectious glee. Say hi to people passing by on the street, or start up conversations with those sat around you on the bus, or on the subway. Too many people are afraid to step outside their comfort zones in this sense, but meeting people and making brief half-hour friendships is so an incredible thing to do. There is a word, Sonder, which is the recognition that each passerby has a life as complex and vivid as your own, so why not hear their stories. If you’re not feeling brave enough, or don’t know how to break the ice of random conversation with random people, then why not pretend you don’t know the area. Ask them for advice on where to go and what to see. You’ll be amazed at how such a simple segue will lead into a good old laugh.

Dual Headphones

This is one of our favorite random activities, but go and by an earphone splitter so that both of you can listen to the same music, plug it into your iPhone and head off on a walk. Take it in turns to choose a song, but do it alphabetically. This is such an epic and subtle way to make incredible memories. You’ll see your surroundings in a whole new light, unable to talk to one another, as you listen to each others song choice and look at your surroundings, taking it all in. You’ll see things you never saw before, in see things in a whole new way. You’ll give songs new meanings and you’ll bond with one another without even speaking; it is totally random, and spontaneous, yet incredible too.

Road Trip

Do it, just jump in the car and drive. Put $20 worth of fuel in the tank and go as far as it will take you. See what you stumble across. See what adventures you end up going on. If you see something that catches your eye, then stop and check it out. The other thing you can do to add to the total bonkers-ness of it all is to each pack a bag of totally random things to make the journey that much more memorable. Take candyfloss with you. Or pack a couple of longboards. Go online and see what dashboard items you can get, because there are some incredibly fun things out there. What’s more, they can be cheap too; some companies offer $5~$90 OFF – Custom Bobbleheads Unique Craftsmanship. Why not pack a tent and turn your spontaneous road trip into a spontaneous camping trip. This is your chance to travel with your best friend without going far, enjoying your own neck of the woods, bonding, and laughing, and do it for no good reason. That is what makes this a privilege, is the fact we can do this sort of thing, knowing some people can’t.

Street Musicians

The world is full of talented people. It is packed full of them. Yet all too often we don’t actively look for them, or we don’t give them the time of day, or we don’t see their talents because we are too busy caring about our own little world. So why not stop and take it all in for a minute? Why not go and find street musicians in your area, sit and watch them, dance, sing with them and drop a couple of dollars into each hat. Seeing your favorite band live is a gig that probably costs upward of $60, and yet for $10 you could go to five live gigs. If you can’t spare that amount, though, why not come up with a totally random points system based on your preferences, and then go back and tip the performer you liked best – you never know what might happen. Stop and listen to each one, that will make their day more than you know, but then score them based on song choices, instruments, energy, style, and anything else you can think of.

Events

Every city has an array of stuff going on, so why not go to the first event you walk past or hear of. Head to the local tourist office and ask them to pick a random event that is happening in town today. It could be an environmental march, it could be a seminar, or the opening of a café, or even an art exhibition. It doesn’t matter what it is, it just matters that you embody spontaneity and go. Who knows, you may learn something incredible. You may find you love a certain niche of art, or have a preordained love for a new food, or anything. The thing to remember is that life should be about new experiences, so throw yourself into them as often as you can. We are all learning about ourselves, and that never stops.

Dress Up

Too many of us take life too seriously, so why not go the other way and be as silly as possible. If you have a dressing up box then great. If not, raid your wardrobe, or your parents’ wardrobe, see if there are any decidedly dodgy and retro clothes that you can wear. Why not go one step further and have a 1970s inspired photoshoot. Take what you can find, head to a fancy dress shop, get some wigs, head to local landmarks and hold a hippy-inspired photoshoot. One day you’ll look back at these photos and smile. These will be the good old days when you were carefree and happy. So be weird, be wild, be odd and be you. Trust us. You’ll only regret it if you’re not.

The world is so full of opportunities to say yes, but all too often we don’t. We forget to live in the moment or get the most out of everyday. We believe in things like Carpe Diem, but the reality is very different. Imagine if every morning you woke up and found $86,400 in your bank, with one catch; anything you don’t spend that day is lost. It doesn’t carry over to the next day. You can’t save it, you can only spend it. Well, you would spend every cent, right? Well, we have 86,400 seconds to spend each day, so why not spend them with the same mentality.

Now go and be spontaneous.

A Healthy Mind Makes a Healthy Person

A Healthy Mind Makes a Healthy Person

Our brains are at the centre of our bodies. Well, not physically, but our brains are the main control unit for everything that we do. It houses all of the functions that our body needs to be able to work. Do we need to move our hand? Our brain has to process it. Do we need to go toilet? Our brain will let us know and our body will react accordingly. Our brains also house our memories. Somewhere deep inside of your brain, there are memories that are locked away. Perhaps they are embarrassing situations, perhaps happy moments, or maybe even things you try to forget but simply can’t.

Whatever we do it is in some way related to our brains, so if we want to have a healthy body, it makes sense to have a healthy brain. Here are some great ways to look after your mental health to keep yourself working at your optimal level.

Change Your Diet

Good nutrition is the key to a healthy mind. You should be remembering your vitamins and minerals, eating healthy food and making sure you skip as much junk food as possible. If you aren’t used to counting calories or watching your weight, then you can track your calories with an online tool. You can also take supplements that will help maintain good brain health and give you nutrients that you’re missing from your diet. For instance, if you don’t eat enough fish then you’re probably missing out on omega-3 fatty acids, and citrus fruits are good for vitamin C. Take a look at this brain supplements 101 guide if you want more information on how supplements can empower your brain.

Stimulate Your Mind

If you want you run but you don’t practice running, your legs won’t be able to cope with what your brain wants it to do. In other words, you have to practice running in order to run well. The same logic applies to your brain. If you aren’t actively using your brain and stimulating it, then you aren’t working it hard enough and it will slowly get lazy. If you want to give your brain a good workout, then consider doing the daily sudoku or crossword puzzles in the newspaper, or get a smartphone app that challenges you with some simple or advanced math problems.

Avoid Bad Habits

Alcohol, tobacco and drugs will kill your brain activity. If you are having trouble breaking free from these habits, then it’s recommended to seek professional help. Dealing with an addiction is difficult on your own and the best way to improve your chances is to get your friends and family to help you and to see a doctor that specialises in treating addictions.

Summary

A healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand. Having one usually makes it easier to have the other, and both of them are great things to strive for. The key points to take from this article is to eat healthily, stimulate both your body and mind and avoid bad habits. It’s not an easy task, but it will get easier the more you stick to it.

A New Hierarchy Of Needs

A New Hierarchy Of Needs

Are you where you always wanted to be, but still unhappy? Meeting your goals and still facing dissatisfaction can be tough. Where do you go from there? The strange thing about happiness is that it doesn’t fall on one factor. When you focus on getting everything right with one aspect of your life, you can neglect others. As Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can teach us, satisfaction doesn’t come from one thing. There are a few things to get right before we say we’re happy. Even then, you may find that happiness is more elusive than you thought. But, it’s a start, right?

home-1730489_960_720Image from Pixabay

HOME

You can’t find success in the complex aspects of life if you haven’t got the basics right. Food and shelter is at the bottom of Maslow’s lists. If you haven’t got those, the rest of your efforts could go to waste! But, having a roof over your head isn’t enough. What Maslow failed to consider is that you won’t be happy with your home until you have it the way you want it. So, get started making a home you can be happy in. Whether you need a Kitchen refurb, or a complete redecoration, get to work. Think, too, about the furniture you buy. If you’ve put no effort into your choices, you’re less likely to be happy with the results. Buying furniture you love will add to the sense of satisfaction and make the home your own!

WORK

Even the perfect home won’t solve your blues if you’ve got a job you hate. In a world where money talks, it’s easy to get stuck in a career. You know the way it goes; you get a job for the time being, and before you know it you’ve been there for years. If you dread each day, there’s no way you can be as happy as you’d hoped. It’s time to wake up and realize the truth. Life is too short to wish your days away. There are many reasons we stay in a career that makes us unhappy. The most prominent being fear of failure. Maybe someone convinced you that you would never get where you wanted. Perhaps you convinced yourself. But, you don’t know until you try. Take a risk. What’s the worst that could happen?     If you have a job you love but still aren’t happy, look at other aspects, like…

LOVE

Love and companionship are, of course, necessary for satisfaction. Without them, we can lose sight of purpose. If you’ve been without love, it’s time to get searching. Again, you need to put yourself out there to reap the rewards. Or, are you in a relationship that’s not working? If there’s something you need to discuss with your partner, it’s time to get it out in the open. You may not be able to work through your issues, but it’s important you try. If things fall apart, you’ll be free to pursue something that gets you closer to where you want to be!

How to clean a mattress

By Guest Blogger, David H.

How to clean a mattress

Many people ignore the importance of cleaning their mattresses although it can lead to serious health problems. Some people spend years trying to cure acne or asthma not knowing that their mattresses are the main reason why they are not getting any better. Even though you sleep on the bed sheets, your mattress is still subject to dust, dead skin cells and other allergens that can cause serious respiratory and skin problems. In this article we will highlight the best ways to clean a mattress:

  1. Vacuum your mattress:

Even with changing your sheets every other day, dust and skin cells would still reach your mattress. We shed skin cells as we sleep, and while we don’t directly sleep on the mattress, some of these cells do end up on the mattress’s surface. You need to vacuum your mattress every week to remove accumulated dust, pet hair and food crumbs. Not removing the dust can make your mattress the best home for dust mites and bed bugs which are very dangerous.

  1. Spot clean new stains:

The best way to clean a mattress is to treat spots as soon as they happen. This is will prevent the spill from sinking into the mattress. As soon as you have a spill, you should make sure that you have absorbed most of the moisture before trying to clean the stain. You can use tissue paper to absorb the moisture before trying to clean the stain. Always clean the stain from the outside towards the center. Avoid rubbing as it will make the stain sink in deeper into the mattress. You can use baking soda with water to remove tough stains. Let it dry then vacuum away the white powder.

  1. Deal with old stains:

Maybe you don’t feel that you need to replace your mattress just yet, but it doesn’t mean that you have to ignore old stains. Once stains have dried they become very tough to deal with. When bodily fluids like sweat and blood dry out they combine with the mattress fabric and they become very hard to remove. Use an enzyme cleaner to clean old stains. They break down stains and odors. You can also use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and baking soda to remove tough stains.

  1. Deodorize your mattress:

Cleaning a mattress means to keep it smelling fresh and clean. Even after removing stains you will not feel that your mattress smells clean all the time. Prepare a mixture of lemon juice and water to remove the bad odors and to keep your mattress smelling nice for some time.

  1. Disinfect your mattress:

Lemon juice and vinegar can also disinfect your mattress by killing all the bacteria and the germs. Using a chemical disinfectant can activate allergies.

  1. Air your mattress:

The best thing you can do is to leave your mattress in the air and in the sun. It might not be easy but you need to properly ventilate your mattress at least once a month. This will kill the bacteria and the germs.

These are the best tips to clean a mattress that will likely make your mattress live for a long time. Sleeping on a clean mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and will fix a lot of health problems.

How To Be Your Own Best Friend

How To Be Your Own Best Friend

Take Yourself On A Trip

pexels-photo-114998Image source

A lot of people think that they can’t go on vacation alone – but the opposite is actually true. Going travelling by yourself is one of the most liberating things you can ever do. You can be truly selfish while you’re there, and do exactly what you want every day. If you love art then you can spend all day in a single gallery instead of having a partner or friend huffing with boredom beside you. You can dip into all the little cafes you like to find where has the best coffee and you can sit in the sun and read all day. If you want, you can always find someone to make friends with in your hotel or locality – but remember that being alone doesn’t mean that you’re lonely.

Get To Know Yourself

pexels-photo-320007Image source

If you’ve been in relationships for a long time then it’s a good idea to figure out who you are when you’re by yourself. Try out different things to find something that fits. Maybe you’re more of a bookworm than you ever thought, or you’ll discover during a French class that you’d like to move to Paris one day for a few months. There are so many things out there in the world that you’ve never experienced. You could even try out getting a psychic reading – look online to find a psychic phone number. Even if you don’t totally believe in it, it’ll make you question yourself and what you believe and what you want.

Get Yourself Fit And Healthy

pexels-photo-136404Image source

There’s nothing better than feeling as though you’re strong and that your body is in great condition. Sign up for the gym and pay for a few sessions of personal training so you figure out how to use the equipment without injuring yourself and so you find out what sort of workout routine is best for you. If the gym doesn’t appeal, then try going for some long hikes and discovering more about your local area – you could even take a friend along with you! You could also try out a yoga or Pilates class if you want to work on your core strength. Let’s face it – yoga’s just as good for your spiritual health as your physical.

Be Kind To Yourself

pexels-photo-237593Image source

The strange thing about most human beings is that we just don’t treat ourselves as well as we do other people. Make yourself and what you want a priority in your own life, and take note when you do something that you’re proud of and happy with. Remember that your best is good enough and that no one will ever be perfect (and that the people who appear to be are pretty much just faking it). If you feel emotionally exhausted then it’s okay to say no to people – being assertive is one of the healthiest skills you can acquire and one of the best ways to make yourself happier. Make sure that you say ‘I love you’ to yourself every once in a while to – at the end of the day, you’re all that you have.
