Don’t Let DIY Become DI-Sigh!

Don’t Let DIY Become DI-Sigh!

When you’ve got a problem with your home that needs fixing, or a renovation that needs completing, then there’s definitely an amazing feeling of accomplishment that comes with getting your hands dirty and completing the project yourself. But while DIY is admirable in many ways, you also have to acknowledge that there’s a lot of opportunity for things to go wrong.

DIY can be a pretty dangerous game if you’re not playing it properly. It’s essential that you don’t underestimate these sorts of tasks, because you could end up making a bunch of common errors that range from expensive to downright dangerous.

Here are the DIY errors you need to avoid!

Not accepting that you’re not the right person for the job

Your biggest enemy in DIY can be yourself. Your determination to complete a certain task – be it to develop your own skills or simply to save money – ban put you in some dangerous situations. You need to assess each project or plan very carefully and ask yourself honestly if you’re experienced or equipped enough to be dealing with it. In fact, there are certain tasks that you should probably leave to someone else without even giving it that much thought. Let’s say your roof needs some work. In this sort of situation, you’re really best leaving it to people who do it for a living, such as SonShine Roofing. The fact is that roof work is probably the most dangerous home maintenance task there is – it’s definitely best left to someone else 99.9% of the time.

Assuming all tools are equal

You can get the vast majority of your usual DIY essentials for pretty cheap. Drills, saws, box cutters, wrenches, hammers – a lot of companies make these things, and the prices at which you can get them often reflect their perceived “basic†status. But, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and this is especially true in the world of DIY and construction. If you’re not willing to fork out a little more for really high-quality tools, then you could end up doing a really shoddy job. In fact, you could even increase the risk of suffering an injury. A cheap, flimsy saw, for example, makes slipping easier. While workers shouldn’t get into the habit of blaming their tools, there are definitely tools that are better for the job than others.

Trying to do it as fast as possible

Yeah, we get it: you want to get it done as fast as possible. Sometimes this is because you want the project completed within a certain timeframe. But a lot of the time this occurs because people start to run out of enthusiasm or patience about halfway through the project. So they start rushing things slightly. Protip: do not give in to the temptation to start rushing the project! You’ll end up with a sloppy job once it’s completed, and you’ll also increase the risk of injury. If you’re really feeling less enthused and confident, then call in an expert. They can pick up the task from whatever stage of completion it happens to be in.

Stop Worrying So Much About Medical Operations!

Stop Worrying So Much About Medical Operations!

Surgery is an amazing human accomplishment. Actually getting into somebody’s body in order to fix problems and not simply making the problem worse? (We’re looking at you, Middle Ages.) It’s up there with some of our greatest achievements, along with flying and the harnessing of electricity.

But despite all our surgical advances, there are still loads of people out there who are terrified of the idea of getting surgery. This isn’t to ignore the fact that pretty much everyone has some kind of anxiety about going under the knife. It’s not exactly anyone’s idea of a good time.

But for many people out there, it’s a little more acute. It goes beyond mere discomfort and anxiety and into a state of fear of an upcoming surgery. And who could blame them, really? When you go into surgery, you’re giving up power. You’re knocked out and handed to a bunch of people with extremely sharp instruments. Professional and talented people, yes… but still.

If you’re feeling nervous, then here are some tips for you.

Keep your mind occupied

There’s usually long time between the creation of the appointment and the surgery itself. It can be weeks or even months. The problem is that leaves a long time for the imagination to wander to unpleasant places! This is why you need to keep yourself as busy as possible. Exercise is great for this, as long as it’s compliant with your doctor’s orders. Books, movies, video games, creative projects, volunteer work, going out with friends… as long as it keeps your mind off of the upcoming surgery, you should consider it!

Ask about alternative surgeries

Less invasive forms of surgery aren’t always highlighted by doctors, generally because they have a vested interest in you going with a particular type of surgery. You should inquire with your doctor about other treatments. You could get equally beneficial treatment without open surgery? Laser surgery, for example, is a lot less scary for many people. It’s not just for eyes; even spine problems can be dealt with using laser surgery!

Educate yourself!

We fear the unknown more than we fear anything else. This applies greatly to this situation. After all, you’re submitting yourself to a situation of pitch blackness while people prod at you with knives. But there’s paradoxical behavior that people engage in that makes it all worse: they’re convinced that reading more about the surgery will make their anxiety worse. In fact, the opposite is true; getting more details will reveal that it’s not as scary as you thought. Laser eye surgery, for example, seems pretty intense – but if you read into it, you’ll see that it’s actually nowhere near as scary as people think.

Nurture your trust

Not everyone medical professional is Gregory House! Doctors aren’t going to think any less of you or talk to you like you’re an idiot if you have concerns. Speak frankly with your doctor about your concerns. If you can get to know your surgeon a little more – even if it’s by researching their record – it will be much easier to be less anxious about going under their knife!

Nothing Mattress: Everything You Need To Know For a Carefree Night’s Sleep

Nothing Mattress: Everything You Need To Know For a Carefree Night’s Sleep

Most of us don’t think all that much about sleep. But it forms a huge part of our lives. The average person spends around a third of their life asleep, with authority bodies recommending an average of eight hours sleep a night. So it’s time we started paying more attention to our sleeping habits. When we sleep, our bodies get the chance to rest and recuperate. It’s the time our body takes to form new memories, repair torn muscles and prepares you for the next day. So how, do you go about ensuring you get the best night’s sleep possible?

Preparing for Bed

When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis, a routine becomes important. It gets you into good habits and makes sure that your body is ready to settle down and nod off. Try not to consume caffeine for three hours before heading to bed. It can keep you awake and lead to restlessness. This doesn’t just mean a coffee ban. There’s caffeine in tea too! Also, avoid energy drinks. If you want a soothing pre-bedtime drink, try warm, milky drinks like hot chocolate or malt drinks. You shouldn’t eat anything during this time either. This allows your stomach to digest the bulk of your day’s food and settle down. Avoid using devices with blue light, such as laptops, computers or mobile phones. The blue light will trick your body clock into thinking that it is day time. Opt for reading a book instead.

Guaranteeing Comfort

You should be able to sink into your bed, snuggle into a soft pillow and nod off easily and comfortably. But for some of us, our beds aren’t as comfortable as we’d hope. You should ensure that your mattress is replaced every eight years. If it’s time that you buy a new one, read up recommendations on bestmattress-reviews.org. Sales staff are always out to sell you something, so reading up on real life reviews and opinions will give you a more balanced opinion when it comes to finding what’s best for you and your budget. Make sure that your pillows are plush (they can flatten out over time) and your sheets are fresh. Change your sheets at least once a week to ensure that everything is fresh and smelling lovely.

Banishing Distractions

Never work or socialize from your bed. Your bed should be used for one purpose only: sleeping and resting. Put phones away in a drawer to avoid checking notifications when you should have your eyes closed. If you need to set an alarm, try a bedside alarm clock instead of the alarm on your phone. It is just as effective but offers no distractions. Make sure that your door is closed and close your windows if you live in a particularly busy and noisy area. Request that anyone you live with leaves you to sleep once you have entered your room. You should only be disturbed in matters of emergency. If you are a light sleeper, try earplugs and night masks.

Keep a Healthy Home in the Heat This Summer

Keep a Healthy Home in the Heat This Summer

Staying healthy is something you should work at all year, but it’s often in the spring and summer months when you really want to commit yourself. It’s hard to stay motivated when it’s colder and darker, so you can feel much more energized when summer arrives. Keeping your home healthy during the summer is sometimes a challenge, especially if you suffer from hayfever. You need to stay cool and hydrated and make sure you can get a good night’s sleep in the heat. Here’s how you could make your home healthier this summer to live a healthier lifestyle.

Staying Cool

Keeping cool is one of the most important things you need to do during the summer. It’s important to avoid becoming dehydrated or even experiencing things like heat stroke. Plus, staying cool helps to keep you comfortable, putting you in a better mood and generally making it easier for you to live your life. Most people’s immediate thought to ensure their home stays cool is to get the best air conditioner they can find. An air conditioner is often the most effective way of staying cool. However, you can also make use of fans, open windows, and also keep your home darker to prevent the sun heating it up.

Stock the Kitchen with Healthy Food

During the winter, it’s easy to take comfort in less healthy foods. When summer arrives, it can often be easier to stick to a healthier diet. You might have less of an appetite when it’s hot, and prefer to eat lighter and smaller meals. However, there can be lots of tempting treats too, from ice cream to BBQ. Instead of indulging in barbecue and cold desserts, you can try to be a little healthier. Focus on enjoying different types of salads, which you can bulk up using ingredients like couscous or quinoa. Consider making your own ice pops too, using fruit juice, so you know exactly what’s in them.

Spend Time Gardening

Getting to spend more time outside is one of the best things about summer. Gardening is a great way to spend time in your backyard, and it’s excellent for your mental health. It can also be pretty hard physical work, depending on what you choose to do, so it can help to keep you fit. If you want something to get you outside in the summer, doing some gardening could be just what you need.

Sleep Well

Sleeping well is essential to both your mental and physical health. If you’re struggling to sleep in the summer, it could have more of an effect on you than you might think. You don’t want to be falling asleep by mid-afternoon when you have such lovely long days to enjoy. Staying cool at night is the key to a good sleep, so try to sleep with light sheets and have your air conditioning on if you can. You might also need to block out the late evening sun – blackout blinds or curtains can help with this.

Make your home healthier in the summer with a few changes to manage the heat. Spend your time wisely to keep fit and eat healthily.

Moving Vs Renovating: The Pros and Cons

Moving Vs Renovating: The Pros and Cons

pexels-photo-259597Photo from here

When you first moved into your house, it might have felt like your dream home. However, just because it was exactly what you were after at the time, doesn’t mean there won’t be problems later down the line. Maybe you’ve had a couple of kids or adopted some pets. Perhaps you’ve started caring for an elderly relative, or have started working from home? Either way, a change in circumstances can mean a house you once loved is no longer suitable. When this happens, you have two main options: stay and renovate or move somewhere new. But which do you pick?

Renovation: The Pros

If you only need one or two extra rooms, a simple extension or even a conservatory can solve your issues. You could convert the loft, basement or even just re-jig the space you have by moving the internal walls. Either way, it could be a simple fix that saves you a lot of time, hassle, and money from moving house. If you’re close to family, good schools or just generally love your home and don’t want to move, renovating allows you to stay put while adapting your home to your current needs.

Renovation: The Cons

Renovation is no walk in the park. When this kind of work is being done while you’re still living in the property, it can be incredibly stressful as it feels like you’re living on a building site. When you’re doing major renovation work, you will often need planning permission too, and waiting around for that can be annoying when you just want to get cracking. Then, of course, there’s the cost too. If you don’t want to borrow against your home, you will need to come up with the money for renovations too which aren’t ever going to be cheap.

Moving House: The Pros

Moving house is incredibly exciting. It’s the perfect opportunity to start fresh, you have this new blank canvas and the promise of a new life ahead of you. There are few chances in life you get like this where you get to wipe the slate and start again. Moving house also allows you to work out exactly what you don’t like about your old place so you can find something better the next time around. Perhaps your commute is too far, or you want to be closer to better schools? Whatever it is, you could compare home loans and get started on the path to a new life.

Moving House: The Cons

There’s no doubt about it, moving is stressful. Physically moving your items, changing over bills and addresses with a hundred and one companies, cleaning and repairing your old property and finding the perfect new home. You have removals vans to book, solicitors to speak to and so much more. It’s mentally and physically exhausting, and definitely not something you want to be doing on a regular basis!

Will you be renovating or moving house this year? If so, what was the reason for your decision?
