Focusing on a Healthy Body Rather than a Fashionable Body

Focusing on a Healthy Body Rather than a Fashionable Body

People have been concerned about their bodies for years. Think of all of the times that you’ve heard someone fret about their weight, their body shape, their height, their muscle mass, their fat distribution, their skin tone or endless other supposed “problems†with their appearance. This isn’t all too surprising. There are numerous industries out there that rely on people’s lack of self-confidence and self-acceptance to thrive: the beauty industry, the fashion industry, the plastic surgery industry… the list goes on. Sure, we may all have areas of ourselves that we want to improve on. But rather than focusing on achieving impossible beauty standards set out by the media, how about we focus on our health, fitness, and wellbeing instead? Sure, you can go to a surgeon and go under the knife to achieve a certain look. But it’s not going to help you live a healthier and more fulfilled life. It’s time that we start focusing on having a healthy body rather than a fashionable body. Some of the most common body concerns tend to revolve around fat and weight. So, for now, let’s focus on cellulite and extremes of weight.

Cellulite

Cellulite tends to be a problem that people focus on with appearance in mind. These small dimples are often criticised as unattractive. However, you should be less focused on the aesthetics of cellulite and more concerned with its causes. Myths make out that cellulite is the result of toxins or being overweight. But there is no evidence to support this. In fact, it’s not necessarily indicative of an unhealthy body. It’s more to do with fat distribution and how your fat is stored. So stop worrying! Being Underweight or Obese

We all have different body shapes. We distribute our fat in different ways and have different figures. Some of us will naturally be very slim. Some of us will happen to be a little larger. However, extremes of weight on either end of the scale are to be avoided. If you are underweight or obese, it’s important to know that you are opening yourself up to a whole host of health problems that could easily be avoided nine times out of ten. Being underweight could result in malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, anemia, osteoporosis, decreased immune functioning, increased risk of complication during surgeries, fertility issues, or growth and development issues. Obesity can come hand in hand with increased blood pressure, type two diabetes, heart disease, strokes, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, and kidney disease. All of this things should be actively avoided. If you fear that you’re underweight or obese, visit your health professional or dietician and ask for a check-up. They will be able to assess your BMI and give you a plan for a healthy balanced diet and exercise regime that will help you to fall into the parameters of a healthier weight.

These are just two areas of our bodies that we tend to focus a lot of our attention on. If you have any further concerns to do with your body or how it looks, make sure to do plenty of research. In some cases, you may be worrying needlessly. In others, you may have a few changes to make to ensure that your body functions to the best of its ability.

The Things You’ve Been Doing That You Think Are Healthy (But Aren’t)

It should be pretty clear-cut, shouldn’t it? We do things that are good for our health, and then, we benefit from it, but it seems that received wisdom isn’t always that wise. So, here are some of the things that you might think you are doing to help your body, but in actual fact, you are not…

Cleaning Your Ears With A Cotton Swab

Also known as a q-tip, it’s something that our parents and grandparents used to do to get rid of earwax. But it’s now common knowledge that you shouldn’t use these to clean your inner ears, in fact you shouldn’t put anything in there! Because the eardrum is so easily reached with a q-tip, you could run the risk of rupturing it. So if you’re looking for a proper way to clean your ears, you can use a few drops of mineral oil.

Purchasing Low-Fat Foods

The danger in buying foods that is low in fat and calories so that you are very likely not filling your body with the desired nutrients. When in doubt, look at the ingredients on the back of the package, and you will see that they are more than likely full to the brim with artificial ingredients and sweeteners. We think we’re making a healthy choice by going for low-calorie foods, but it’s better for you to eat calories that are nutrient dense, because eating these types of ready meals and processed foods means that we will only be hungry later on.

Sleeping In

You may feel that you need to catch up on your sleep on weekends, but this could be damaging your body more than you think. First of all, it throws you off your sleep schedule, which could cause problems for your circadian rhythm. In addition to this, you may feel compelled to overeat on these days where you choose to relax, and this can have an impact during your work week. Instead, you should make sure you’re going to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day of the week.

Juicing

Do you find it easier to make smoothies in the morning before you go to work, so you can get your recommended daily intake of fruit? You’re not alone, but in blending your fruit and vegetables to a pulp, you are removing the fiber from them, meaning that you are consuming pure sugar. If you want to have your fruits in the morning before heading off to work, you are better off eating it in its purest form, where the fiber will help your body to remove impurities, rather than dosing yourself up with sugar and having that energy slump later in the day.

Taking Too Many Supplements

Lots of people make this mistake of taking a multivitamin, thinking that they are getting all the benefits. But, it’s impossible to isolate these key nutrients from fruits and vegetables and put them in pill form. When done right, a supplement can add to your overall wellness, but you shouldn’t use it as a cure-all.

Now you know!

The First-Night Guide For A Solo Home Move

The First-Night Guide For A Solo Home Move

Moving house is a big moment in anyone’s life. Sometimes, it spells the end of a chapter. Most times, it means the start of something new. Moving with a family or loved one can be a fantastic way to strengthen your relationships and progress together. But, moving on your own can be an exciting time, too. Perhaps you’re branching into a new career, or going it alone for the first time. Unlike when you have others to consider, this will be a move into complete freedom. And, some of us can’t imagine anything better.

That said, this isn’t a one person job. The majority of us get help along the way to make moving easier. Some of us invite family along to help us get everything in. Others turn to friends who are willing to go the extra mile. And, of course, you’ll probably have a moving company around you on the day, too. All this together is sure to lead to a pretty bustling first day in your new home.

But, no matter how many people you have around for the moving process, there will come a time when everyone heads home. The moving company will be all packed up and finished, and you’ll be left in an empty space, with a hell of a lot to do. It can be a daunting experience, and if you allow yourself to, you may come down hard from all that excitement. To ensure that doesn’t happen, here are a few things to turn your attention to the moment your guests leave.

Start unpacking

The good thing is, you have plenty to keep you distracted. And, there’s no time like the present to get started. As soon as the house is empty, turn your attention to unpacking the crucial rooms. You’ve had a hard day, so don’t pressure yourself to get everything finished. But, having at least a few places the way you want them will make a massive difference to your mentality. Not only will the job keep you distracted, but having your belongings around will help to ease potential loneliness. Plus, getting rooms how you want them will help to reignite your excitement about what you’re doing. If you spend a night or more with just boxes around you’re sure to feel worse and more isolated than you would otherwise.

Look around your new home

Another fantastic idea would be to look around your new home. You may well have visited more than once already, but it’s difficult to get a real feel for a property when it isn’t yours. You likely held back because of the estate agent. Plus, there may have been someone else’s belongings around. Now, you’re free to explore every inch of your new space. This can be a lot of fun, and again, can help keep your excitement alive. Early explorations can also take the area from alien to familiar. Every house has its quirks, and once you’ve discovered those, the two of you could become old friends in no time.

Explore your new surroundings

If you’ve moved into a familiar area, this isn’t as important. But, if you’ve moved somewhere wholly new, it’s worth heading out on that first day to acclimatize. You never know you might meet the neighbors on your trip. Either way, something as simple as walking to the local shop will help you get your bearings. As you walk, pay close attention to your surroundings. Take note of places you would like to come to or explore them as you go if you fancy. You don’t have to stay out for hours. You’ll likely be too exhausted anyway. But, venturing out as soon as possible is essential.

How To Make Your Modern Home Feel More Rustic

How To Make Your Modern Home Feel More Rustic

Want to bring more rustic character to your modern property? There are plenty of ways to bring that country house feel to your home. Here are just a few décor tricks to make your home feel more rustic.

Opt for wooden floors

Wooden floors are essential for bringing that rustic farmhouse feel. You may be able to strip away the carpet and reveal the floorboards beneath or you pay someone to lay down some new solid hardwood flooring. Alternatively, you can opt for click-lock wood flooring, which simply slots in place over the top of your existing floor. There are lots of stained and lacquered hardwoods out there that can bring a more earthy touch.

Use stone countertops

Modern plastic countertops are likely to take away from your home’s rustic feel. Choose a stone material instead to bring a more natural feel to your home. Stones such as quartz and granite are ideal for bringing this feel, but are very costly. A more affordable option could be ceramic tile or an imitation stone such as Carrara marble (far cheaper than real marble). Try and find a stone individually suited to your home.

Have an exposed interior brick wall

For a cosy feature wall in your living room or kitchen, why not consider stripping back the plaster and having some exposed brickwork? You’ll want to thoroughly clean the wall and then seal it, this will make it easier to clean and protect it from moisture damage. Painting the wall could take away from its rustic appearance unless you use a whitewashed effect.

Use DIY storage solutions

A feature common in rustic homes is DIY storage solutions. Mason jars can be great for storing utensils in the kitchen and toothbrushes in the bathroom. Wicker baskets meanwhile can be great for living room clutter such as magazines and DVDs.

Tone down your tech

Our modern homes are filled with digital technology, but this can quickly take away from your home’s rustic feel. A great way to tone down tech is to contrast it with more earthy features. A TV can be placed on a rustic wooden TV stand or hung on an exposed brick wall with a painting opposite. This stop this piece of modern tech being such a focal point. For other gadgets, consider wood paneled examples. For example, wood paneled speakers can be great for bringing a earthier feel.

Use bare bulbs

Edison-style light bulbs can be a nice rustic way of providing artificial overhead lighting. Use multiple bulbs to help increase the amount of light that these give off. These can be hung from a wire or even wrapped around a wooden plank. Candles can also be a great way of providing rustic lighting.

Lay down a fur rug

To top off the rustic feel, consider adding a shaggy fur rug to your living room. These are great for sinking one’s toes into and providing a cosy feel in the evening. This could be a natural thick wool or a synthetic imitation material.
