WWT: Three Household Quirks That Will Make You Ask “What Was That”?

WWT: Three Household Quirks That Will Make You Ask “What Was That”?

We all get used to our homes relatively quickly. We may notice some little faults that we then put right. Then there are the other little quirks that aren’t faults. For example, maybe you get very poor cell service in the kitchen and need to take calls in the living room. Or before coming on, your washing machine makes a noise that sounds like the opening beats to “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder.

We get used to those. They become part of the personality of the home, and we refer to them in conversation. All good. There are a lot of things your house may do from time to time, and sometimes you only notice them after a while living there. So you have to judge whether they’re harmless quirks you can live with, or they need more investigation. Let’s call them WWTs – for “What Was That?”.

WWT #1: Your Lights Dim And Flicker For No Apparent Reason

We all know that when an appliance is used suddenly, it can have an effect on other things around it. In TV dramas when a prisoner is being executed by electric chair, it is even used as a shorthand. That way they don’t need to show the gruesome stuff. Just show some lights flickering, and viewers know exactly what has happened.

It doesn’t need to be an electric chair; any appliance can make this happen. The appliance doesn’t even need to be in your house, so if the lights flicker, it’s not a big deal. That said, if it’s happening more and more often, there may be a deeper issue. It is at this point that it’s worth checking with electricians to trace the problem and remedy it.

WWT #2: You Hear Clicks And Bumps In The Night

You’ll remember from the days of your childhood how your house used to make noises. If you got out of bed in the middle of the night for a glass of water, you probably heard them all the louder. Then you broke the world record for running from the kitchen to your bedroom, and hid under the covers.

The good news is, it doesn’t mean you’re haunted*. Homes make noises due to floorboards and pipes relaxing and contracting naturally. You don’t hear them so much during the day because there is more noise generally. However, a wiring fault can cause cooker rings to switch on unannounced. If you hear that telltale noise, it is worth checking, and asking an expert to check it out.

WWT #3: Your Smoke Alarm Triggers When Nothing’s On Fire

smoke-315874_960_720Source URL: https://pixabay.com/en/smoke-detector-fire-alarm-burning-315874/

Sometimes, while cooking, your smoke alarm can go off. There is no way of stopping yourself feeling slightly judged at this point, but a sensitive smoke alarm can trigger even if no smoke is visible. Indeed, it doesn’t need to be smoke at all. If you shower with the door open, then even steam can trigger a smoke alarm. Which is inconvenient if you’re the only one in the house.

If these are the only times the smoke alarm goes off, then it’s fine. It’s better to have one that is too sensitive than one that does nothing. However, if it goes off when there is nothing that could be triggering it, you may need to replace the alarm. A smoke alarm with a fault could be a liability for the whole family. And not just from a “Boy Who Cried Wolf” point of view.

*Of course, it doesn’t mean you’re NOT haunted, either.

Smoking is one of those habits that a lot of people start and continue with throughout their lives. There is no hiding from the information available to us these days, smoking can be one of the most common causes of fatal illness, which result in deaths daily throughout our nation. Maybe you should just decide to stop and abide by your decision

For some people, just making that decision is enough to kick the habit. Having the willpower and strength within to avoid any temptation. The first days and weeks tend to be the hardest, as the addiction takes a hold. But most people find that once they have gotten over this initial hurdle that they can continue on the path of remaining to quit. It would help if you had a good support network of friends and family around to help you through.

Try applying a nicotine patch

The addiction comes from the amount of nicotine in the cigarette. While stopping completely could be a difficult hurdle to overcome, using patches could slowly reduce the amount of nicotine in your system. Offering you a gradual way of quitting. What this ultimately does it take away some of the harmful substances within a cigarette like tar, as you won’t be inhaling anything.

Consider e-cigarettes as an alternative choice

Some people still like to have something in their hand, and often find that this can be the most difficult thing to combat when it comes to quitting smoking. There are even herbal options that can aid in other areas of your life.

Try a healthier lifestyle approach

You may want to try one of the old fashioned ways of quitting, and that is to change your lifestyle completely. This means looking at the food you eat and the amount of exercise you take each day. It could be as simple as shifting your focus on to something new, like learning a new sport or training for an event like a 10k run. Food can be away people find solace when it comes to quitting, so it’s always a good idea to have a healthier approach to your food to ensure that you don’t put any weight on, or affect your health in other ways.

I hope these tips help you quit smoking.

Do It Yourself: Basic Carpentry Skills All Homeowners Need

Do It Yourself: Basic Carpentry Skills All Homeowners Need

There is one skillset that lots of homeowners wish they had. And that is basic carpentry skills! No matter what type of home project or DIY task you decide to have a go at, you will no doubt be faced with working with wood at some point sooner or later. Rather than hiring a professional carpenter to sort all this out for you, why don’t you learn the tricks of the trade yourself? This will work out a lot cheaper than paying someone else to do the job for you! So which carpentry skills are the most important when it comes to doing small jobs around the house? Here are some of the basics that you need to know.

Plan Ahead

Before you get going with your next DIY job, it is very important that you take some time before you get started to plan everything you need to do. You should write down the tools you will need, and the materials that you will have to buy. It is also worth trying to sketch your ideas down as well. This can help you to see whether your ideas will work and are practical. If your sketch doesn’t look too promising, now is the time to rethink all your ideas and plans. It’s much better to rethink your plans now rather than to get started and waste a lot of materials by going ahead with poorly thought out plans.

Measuring

You may think that all the skill of carpentry is in putting together pieces of wood, and giving them a nice finish so that the whole project looks professional. However, full-time carpenters know that that isn’t the case. They know that the key to doing a fantastic job is getting the measuring just right. After all, if you miscalculate your measurements by a few centimeters, you will end up not being able to put all the pieces together correctly. And your project will be very likely to fail! Before you start work, make sure you have a lockable and retractable tape measure. This is a carpenter’s most important tool! It will help you measure accurately and efficiently. One good tip is to use the same measurer for the whole job. This way, there is no chance you will be foiled by tape measurers that show slightly different readings.

Marking

OK, so you have measured all your wood at least twice. Now you need to mark it so that you cut it correctly. When you are measuring, make sure you mark where you need to cut with a pencil. Rather than just dotting a little spot on the wood, use a ruler to turn the small dot into a straight line that crosses the whole of the wood. You can then follow this whole line with your saw rather than simply cutting straight from the dot and hoping you are going straight!

Get The Right Tools

I’ve already touched upon the fact that it is very important to get the right tape measure for your projects. And that goes for all the tools you use for your home maintenance and DIY jobs. No matter whether you need a new saw, some hot melt glue sticks, or some paint, you should try and invest as much money into them as you can. That way, you know you will be happy in the knowledge that you have some really top-quality tools. The tools you use are extremely important, and using the best you can buy will make a big difference compared to cheap tools. They will be able to go a fantastic job, one that looks like a professional did it for you!

Practice Certain Skills Beforehand

It’s a good idea to practice some skills before you launch straight into your project. Otherwise, if your skills aren’t too up to scratch, this could be very noticeable, and your project might look quite amateurish. So, as you can see, it is well worth spending some time to practice as many skills as you can. One key skill that many people aren’t too hot with is hammering and nailing. Take an old piece of wood, your hammer, and some nails. Make sure you keep on practicing until you are able to hammer nails in that are straight and look very neat.

You will certainly find that doing all your own home improvements and DIY jobs are very rewarding and things that will make you feel incredibly proud. So what are you waiting for? Time to get to work!

Brushing Dos And Don’ts: Are You Getting It Right?

Brushing Dos And Don’ts: Are You Getting It Right?

We all know it’s important to look after our teeth so that we can enjoy healthy, attractive smiles for years to come. But have you thought about your dental health impacts the rest of your body? Studies show that caring for your teeth and gums has incredible benefits for general health. Research suggests that poor oral health increases your risk of a host of health problems, from heart disease and dementia to strokes and diabetes. It’s never been more important to pay attention to your pearly whites, so are you getting it right? Here are some simple tips to ensure that you’re doing everything you can to keep your dental health on track.

Have you got your brushing technique down?

Brushing your teeth is essential because it eliminates harmful bacteria and food debris from the mouth. If you don’t brush, there’s a good chance that plaque will form. Plaque is a sticky, colorless substance, which you may be able to feel on your teeth when you first wake up. It clings to the surfaces of the teeth and the gums, and it’s made from bacteria, food particles, and saliva. Plaque is the main cause of dental decay and gum disease.

Brushing dos

Do brush for 2 minutes

It’s not enough to whizz a brush around your mouth and hope for the best. You need to pay due care and attention when you brush. Set a timer to make sure that you brush for at least two minutes. It may not sound like a long time, but you may be shocked if you timed how long you brush for at the moment. Take care to clean every tooth, and angle the head of the brush so that you can clean along the gum line.

Do swap your toothbrush every 3-4 months

Be honest. When was the last time you swapped your toothbrush head or bought a new toothbrush? It’s essential to replace brushes every 3-4 months, as work bristles don’t work properly. Some brushes are fitted with colored bristles, which show you when you need to buy a new brush. If you’re not sure which brush to buy, your family dentist will be able to give you tips and recommendations.

Brushing don’ts

Brush too hard

You may think that the harder you brush, the better the results, but sadly, you’d be wrong. Brushing vigorously can actually do more harm than good, as it can wear away the enamel. When you’re brushing, use small, circular motions, and be gentle. Once your enamel is worn, it’s not possible to repair it.

Rinse after brushing

Many people assume that they need to rinse their mouth out after brushing. However, it’s actually better to avoid doing this. If you use fluoride toothpaste, rinsing the mouth removes the fluoride, and prevents it from benefiting your teeth. Fluoride is a mineral, which helps to strengthen the enamel and reduce the risk of decay.

Most of us have been brushing our teeth twice a day for as long as we can remember, but have you been getting it right? Hopefully, these simple dos and don’ts will enable you to hone your brushing skills and reduce your risk of developing troublesome dental diseases.

To Make Your Hair Go “Pouf”

To Make Your Hair Go “Pouf”

If you thought that it was the end of big hair, you were wrong. Big hair is back with a vengeance, and now lots of women are trying it out for themselves. Here’s what to do to make your hair go “pouf.”

bantu-knots-on-blown-out-hair-big-hair-bettyy-youtube-blow-dried-natural-hair-styles-maxresdefaultgreatwallpapers.site

Blow Dry It Upside Down

Some women advise not to wash your hair if you want it to go “pouf.†But if you can’t stand going without washing, or if you have naturally oily hair, shampooing might be your only option. If so, then there are still ways to make your hair go big. First off, make sure that when you dry your hair, you blow dry it upside down. This will help give volume to the hair by separating out all the individual strands and helping the hair near the hair follicles stand upright, directly out of the scalp. Find the best hair dryer for thick hair and make sure you flip your hair over so that you can get at the under side too. This will give your hair volume right from the start.

Grab Your Flat Iron

It might sound counterintuitive, but if you’re going for that “pouf†look, all the hair on your head needs to be as straight as possible. For those with naturally frizzy hair, this stage is obvious. But even if your hair is usually straight, flat irons are still a must. If you’ve got curly hair, this stage could be a little difficult, but you’ve probably straightened it before, so do your best. Make sure to check out products that can help make the straightening process easier so that you don’t end up tangled in your own irons.

Use Products That Volumize

If you’ve ever watched Dusty Springfield or Barbara Windsor and wondered how they get their hair so big, the answer is volumizing products, usually lots of them. In the past, many stars and celebs used mousses and gels. But these are uncomfortable, and today, they aren’t nearly as popular. An alternative is to use volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Often these contain powerful volumizing compounds, helping you avoid going through an extra stage after you’ve blow-dried your hair. You can also use volumizing sprays or spritz if you feel that your hair is falling a little flat. When it comes to volume, every little bit helps.

Tease Your Hair

No, we’re not suggesting you make fun of your hair, even though by the time you get to this stage it might be worthy of it. Instead, tease your hair, by gently backcombing a section of it, spraying it, and then repeating the process. If done right, your hair shouldn’t end up looking like a bird’s nest. According to some, not washing, your hair makes it easier to tease. It gives hair the kind of texture it needs for teasing to work really well. Teasing, however, can still be effective with straightened hair.

Work With The Right Tools

Finally, to make big hair, you need the right tools. It’s a good idea to have a blow dryer with a diffuser, as well as hair products that will protect your hair as it is straightened.
