Your Skin is Telling You Health Secrets – But Are You Listening?

Your Skin is Telling You Health Secrets – But Are You Listening?

The skin is the largest organ of your body, and it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that it can act as a vast display sign, letting you know when you have problems that affect you on the inside. The trouble is, not everyone is aware of the secret codes and language that the skin uses to let you know. In today’s guide, I’m going to go through all of the little things your skin might be trying to tell you. Hopefully, you will be able to start listening from now on.

Breakouts

A lot of people suffer from breakouts all the time, but if yours appear on an irregular basis, there is a good chance it is a sign of something else. When you are anxious or feeling stressed, the body unleashes a whole bunch of cortisol – known as the stress hormone. In turn, this can cause havoc in your body, and it goes into overdrive with all kinds of things – including producing breakouts. So, try to unwind a little – with yoga or mindfulness, perhaps –  and you should start having fewer breakouts than before.

Baggy, swollen eyes

A lot of people wake up in the morning looking like Death warmed up, but it’s not as normal as everyone makes out. In fact, it’s a sure sign that you haven’t caught enough shuteye – which could be opening up a world to all kinds of other problems, including high blood pressure, stress, and even stroke. Go to bed a little earlier, and make sure you stick to the same sleep patterns – even during the weekends.

Dark patches

Dark patches under your eyes could be down to your genetics. But again, if you only get them now and again, it might be due to malnourishment. It’s almost crazy to think that people are malnourished in this country, but it’s a lot more common than you might think. Nutrient deficiency is the result of a poor diet, and if you aren’t eating your veggies and greens on a regular basis, it’s time to make a change.

Loose skin

Loose, wrinkly skin is usually a sign of aging. You can either live with it and grow old gracefully, or head to your local cosmetic dermatologist and get a fix. However, loose, sagging skin can also be a sign of a severe underlying disease. These range from very rare conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Marfan’s Syndrome to more obvious issues like sun-related skin changes and even something like T-cell lymphoma.

Changing moles

Moles can be a sign of beauty, but you need to watch them like a hawk. Everyone is at risk from skin cancer developing, and if your moles start to change in appearance or begin bleeding, get them checked out at your doctor’s office.

As you can see, just because you can cover up problem skin with makeup, it doesn’t mean everything is OK on the inside. The good news is that most of these issues can be cleared up with a basic return to a fit and healthy lifestyle. But go and see your doctor anyway, as you never know what your skin might be trying to tell you.
