As Another School Year Comes to an End.

Here’s a big A+ to all the parents and kids, Teachers, workers and mentors for another fine school year! Congratulations to all the graduates out there, big and small. Way to go! For all those that are just on a summer break, be sure to have a safe and wonderful summer. Wear your sunscreen and stay hydrated! Continue to check in as Tips from Tia will have great summer tips to make life easier.

For your kids that have to have summer reading lists, check out the new book Incredible Edible Meg in The Medusa Eye Camera Obscura By Vincent Viñas the 1st title in the Incredible Edible Meg series, introduces us to Nutmeg DeMorrow, a very special girl with very special powers. Oh, yeah, she’s also made of cake.

Author Viñas says,

“Incredible Edible Meg in The Medusa Eye Camera Obscura is a silly escape for kids and adults alike who are in touch with their imaginations. Things aren’t always fun and laughs though and it’s nice to help out people in need whenever you can. Just as I donated proceeds from the first 45 days of sales from The Funeral Portrait to breast cancer research, I plan on doing similar with this new book. My charity this time around will be the Pacer Center, which offers help in many areas but the one particular area I’m focusing on is getting help for children when it comes to recognizing and dealing with bullying. Being a kid and growing up is hard enough without having to deal with bullying in any capacity.

The fundraiser will start May 22nd 2014 and continue through August 20th 2014. Our goal is to raise $1000 dollars. However much money I raise, Native Ink Press will match the donation!” order book now!

Enjoy your summer and remember to continue to feed your brain with knowledge!

Stupid Tip of the Day: Petroleum Jelly on Eyelids

By Tia Cristy

Stupid Tip of the Day: Petroleum Jelly on Eyelids for highlighting effects.

Petroleum Jelly has been known to help reduce wrinkles and heal chapped skin. It’s a very shiny look has been desired by some to highlight features on the skin.

While it has these great benefits, it is very sticky and putting it on the eyelids is just a no, no. It can cause the eyelid to stick, which will be irritating and also dry out your eyes.

You can put Petroleum Jelly at crow’s feet, laugh lines and near lips but use caution, keep it out of eyes and mouth.

If you want a highlight on your eyelid use a pale shadow or concealer, this will give highlight without any negative side effects and a natural shine. Keep the jelly no lower than the arch of your brow.

To Butter or Not to Butter for a Burn. Stupid Tip of the Day:

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/ by Supertrooper

You’ve probably heard of this. You get burnt by the stove or a fire and someone may tell you to put butter on it. Though this tip has been around for awhile, it’s not the best remedy for treatment.

Put butter in a hot frying pan and what does it do? It sizzles! So, why would you but it on a skin burn? Many say it helps expel the heat heat from a burn. But, butter also contains unseen bacteria. This can get into the burn and penetrate down deep, cause more harm than good in some cases.

The best tip for a burn is to eject the heat by first using room temperature water and slowly progressing to cold water. Soak the burn in cold water for up to 20 minutes to reduce scarring. Apply antibiotic cream to the burn and cover with a clean bandage or dressing. For pain, use an ointment that has a pain reliever. If burn is extreme, seek medical attention right away.

Smart Phones Make you Smarter? Stupid Tip of the Day:

Smart Phones Make you Smarter? Stupid Tip of the Day:

A majority of us have them. We work and play from them. But, are we connected to something that isn’t the best thing for us?

Despite the name, smart phones have allowed humans to make stupid choices. Stupid choices like, texting and driving, committing stupid crimes to video for the sake of humor and infidelity are just to name a few.

The devices have had benefits as well, being able to locate, look up and connect when being used for good can be a very good thing.

There is good and bad; like any magic, smart phones, social networking and apps come with a price. Studies have just proven the majority of subjects that devote 1 hour daily, “plugged in” dropped their I.Q. by 10 points. Those participants that spent over an hour, were close to dropping 10 points an hour. Those participants that used their smart phones for business or mindful things were less to not effected at all.

Moral of the story. Work out your brain properly. Only devote a small amount of time to social networks if possible. Stay away from mindless activities on the phone for long periods of time. And, when it comes to the kids… Schedule structured time for them to learn and interact face to face with family and peers.

There is a big difference from learning information like recipes on the internet than, scrolling through what someone ate today.

Flowers Last Longer in Cold Water. Stupid Tip of the Day:

By Tia Cristy

Stupid Tip of the Day: Flowers Last Longer in Cold Water.

After a lot of flowers were sold last week. Some Valentine’s are trying to get the longest life out of those bouquets. Putting flowers in cold water is not really the way to go.

Flowers actually last longer in lukewarm water. It prevents the shock factor of temperature being too cold for the bloom.

Remember, petals don’t last very long in the cold months and it’s the same concept if you put the stems in too cold of water.

If you want to hold on the the flowers longer than usual, dry them out. Best way to dry-out is by removing them from the water before they loose too many petals. Then secure the stems together with a rubber band. Turn and hang upside down for several days till the flowers are completely dry.
