Stop Thinking Outside the Box and Get Back In!

Stop Thinking Outside the Box and Get Back In!

It’s 2017. It’s gotten to a point where people are trying too hard to think outside of the box in order to a give a gift that will impress, delight and astound the receiver. It’s hard to do, it takes up a lot of time although the results are probably worth the stress (often, though, this is not the case).

Why aren’t we sticking with the traditional? Is it getting to the point where traditional is the new ‘thinking outside of the box’? If so, clap your hands and cheer because here are the top Valentine’s gifts that will never go out of style.

Flowers

There are so many alternative sites now that have popped up in an effort to get you to steer away from the traditional flowers and pick something a little less … expected. There are so many different varieties of flower and foliage to put into a bunch or arrangement (did you know that cabbages are even being added in?!)  that there is no chance that you could be boring or stereotypical. Just let the florist know what you’re aiming for and let them surprise you – they’re in this profession because they know what they’re doing. They know what’s in style (yes, flowers have trends), what’s in season and most of all what will look amazing.

Chocolates

Gone are the days of normal, boring chocolates! Artisans are making appearances at pop-up shops, food markets and even online, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they are going over and above the call of duty to make exceptional chocolates for Valentine’s Day – after all, what other day in the year could require such exquisite luxury food to specifically to impress? Don’t even mention Christmas – we’ve just gotten over that.

Balloons

Balloons are coming back with a vengeance, with some people choosing balloons over flowers and other ornamental decorations to deck-out venues for occasions such as weddings, baptisms and bar/bat mitzvahs. Can you remember how excited you were to get a balloon when you were younger? There’s something about them which is just fun, and you can get them in any style to suit your tastes – even if there is an in-joke about a cartoon character, political figure or any other item you can think of, you can bet there is a balloon to go with it. Although they may not be your go-to when thinking of Valentine’s Day gifts, they will always be super-cute and appreciated.

Perfume/Aftershave

What’s the point of getting all dressed up to go out on a date if you’re not smelling good? Choosing a perfume or aftershave that you like for your partner will always go down a treat; it may not be a smell that they would have gone for themselves, thus broadening their horizons and scent collection, or you could be replacing a bottle that you know they love. Either way, it’s always good to give yourself a spritz before going on a date. Smell is one powerful sense, and a simple sniff of whatever you were wearing on the night can throw you straight back into the memory. Let’s just hope it was one worth remembering!

Having A Baby? It’s No Easy Task And Here’s Why

Having A Baby? It’s No Easy Task And Here’s Why

Having a baby is an exciting time in any woman’s life. The nine months being pregnant, however, can be a turbulent time for a lot of women. Some will struggle with the likes of morning sickness and tiredness, others will have that pregnancy glow and look radiant. Every pregnancy will be different, and the same can be said for the actual childbirth. While it is completely natural and you are in the care of professionals that deal with babies entering into the world each day, it is still never a simple and easy task. I thought I would share with you some of the things to consider, perhaps helping you to better prepare yourself for the end of your pregnancy journey.

Weigh up all your options

If you don’t know by now giving birth has an element of pain to it, how much you will tolerate is totally down to your own pain threshold. But as you may have never experienced it before, or since forgotten, it is worth knowing all your options when it comes to pain relief. Make sure you discuss what will be available to you with your midwife or any medical professionals involved in your care. This will help you to make an informed decision and guide you when it comes to your birth plan.

Be prepared to listen to the professionals

The medical professionals that will be with you during your labour and for the birth will know what they are doing, so try and keep that clear in your mind when they are advising you on your options. However, sometimes things won’t go according to plan, and the childbirth experience can be a little traumatic. Things may go wrong, but it’s worth knowing you have the support of the legal system on your side if they do as birth injury lawyers will happily discuss your case.

Decide on who you want with you as a birthing partner

You won’t want to go through the experience alone, so consider who you want to have as a birthing partner. In most cases, this will be the baby’s father, but if they happen to not handle medical environments well you could always opt for your own mother or even a close friend. You want someone who will help keep you calm and collected.

Make sure you consider every eventuality

Many women will have a plan that involves no pain relief or medical intervention, hoping for a natural birth. But in some cases, this won’t be possible, so it’s worth researching some of the other types of birth options. It might end up being that you need surgery to help deliver your baby, or intervention in some way. Prepare yourself for every eventuality, even if you don’t expect it to go that way.

Relax and try and enjoy the moment

Finally, remember that this is your first meeting of your brand new baby, so try and relax and enjoy the moment. Between contractions, of course.

I hope these tips help you prepare for any future baby.

Eight Problems With Your Teeth (And How You Can Fix Them)

Eight Problems With Your Teeth (And How You Can Fix Them)

necklace-518268_960_720Image source

One of the worst pains that you can experience is toothache. It feels utterly unrelenting and seems to take over every part of your body with its throbbing pain – and to add insult to injury, you can’t even eat anything that might make you feel better because that just makes the pain worse. Dental pain is one of the biggest causes of chronic pain and it can really blight your quality of life. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help solve some common problems that you might have with your teeth…

girl-102829_960_720Image source

Tooth Sensitivity

A huge number of people suffer from sensitivity in their teeth – known as dentin sensitivity – which means that they have a level of discomfort when consuming certain foods and drinks. It’s such a common problems that it’s estimated that half the population suffers from it, although the pain can thankfully come and go, so you might not have a sensitive tooth at all times. Many people find that they have sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures – meaning that your morning coffee or that ice cream you enjoy as a treat a couple of times a week might be an issue. You might also have problems with sugary, sticky foods. If you think you may be suffering from tooth sensitivity, it might be caused by receding gums or periodontal disease. You could always ask your dentist about the reasons behind your particular tooth sensitivity, and in the meantime start using a toothpaste that’s designed for sensitive teeth.

Bad Breath

Is there anything more embarrassing than bad breath? Of all the dental problems out there, bad breath is the one least likely to elicit sympathetic responses. Bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis, is caused by dental problems up to 85% of the time, so if you’re embarrassed about your breath, don’t stay quiet – chances are, there are things you can do to fix it. Gum disease, cavities, dry mouth and oral cancer can all cause bad breath, so if you think that using mouthwash to cover up the smell is a long term solution, it’s probably better to talk to your dentist instead. Have your teeth thoroughly cleaned by the hygienist, and make sure that you brush twice a day and regularly floss. You could also try using a tongue scraper.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is otherwise known as cavities, and is an incredibly common problem – yet it’s also very painful and sometimes expensive to resolve, so should be avoided at all costs. It’s caused by the build up of plaque on our teeth – this is a sticky substance that builds up over the course of the day in between brushing. Acid is created when plaque reacts to the starches and sugars in our food, and this leads to the erosion of the enamel on our teeth, and from there, tooth decay. The best way to stop yourself getting tooth decay is through making sure that you brush your teeth twice a day and that you regularly floss. Make sure you leave brushing until half an hour after you eat, because this can make your tooth enamel a little more fragile. You should also do your best to cut down on sugary and acidic food and drink.

Tooth Infection

Anyone who’s had a tooth infection will know that there are very few pains as bad as them. Tooth infections are caused by abscesses at the root of the tooth, or between the tooth and the gum, and can be caused by tooth decay, cracked teeth, or gingivitis – all of which can allow bacteria to enter the root of the tooth through openings in the tooth enamel. If you have a tooth infection, you’ll be able to tell from a throbbing, gnawing or sharp pain, along with possible symptoms like a fever, tooth sensitivity, and a bitter taste in your mouth. If you have these symptoms, go to your dentist immediately. If you can’t get an appointment quickly, try a service like http://dentist.24hourly.com or try to combat the pain using clove oil and keep rinsing your mouth out with salt water. You can also use over the counter painkillers to help out. To heal a tooth infection, your dentist may need to drain the abscess through the root or gum, or even to remove the tooth and place a crown in there instead. You will also be given antibiotics to help heal the infection.

Dry Mouth

Although everyone has a dry mouth from time to time, it may be a sign that there’s a problem with your saliva producing glands if you often have a dry tongue, cracked lips, trouble chewing and mouth sores. Causes of dry mouth can include nervousness, stress, aging, some medications like antidepressants, or cancer treatment like radiation or chemotherapy. Although it doesn’t sound like a particularly big deal, dry mouth can be extremely uncomfortable and can also lead to tooth decay and other dental problems so it’s important to get it treated. The best way to do that is to find out what exactly is causing it, and treat that – and in the meantime, make sure you keep drinking plenty of fluids and maintaining your oral hygiene.

Gum Disease

Up to 75% of people are thought to suffer from some sort of periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease. It’s caused mainly by bacteria from plaque build up in your mouth and can be exacerbated by smoking, grinding your teeth and some medications. If you have gingivitis, the beginning stage of gum disease, it’s reversible and can be treated with medications and plaque removal by your dental hygienist. If you have more advanced gum disease, surgery may be required. You can halt gum disease in its steps by making sure that you keep brushing twice a day and flossing on a regular basis – there’s nothing more important than the upkeep of your oral hygiene.

beauty-1721069_960_720Image source

Dental Occlusion

If you have a problem with your dental occlusion, that means you have a problem with the way your teeth meet when your jaws bite together. That might mean you have a problem with your teeth, your jaw or your gums and you may have problems with fillings fracturing, broken teeth, or tender teeth; you might find the symptoms are more severe in times of stress. You might also suffer from headaches or jaw ache. The best way to deal with issues like this is to go and see your dentist to see if you have TMJ (temporo-mandible joint) problems. Counselling and relaxation techniques like mindfulness might just help, along with diet and exercise like physiotherapy. Dental guards which you wear at night can help with jaw clenching or tooth grinding, and your dentist can also help by adjusting your bite if they think that might be what your issue is.

Oral Cancer

Of course, of all the dental problems you might have, oral cancer is probably the most feared and serious. Regular trips to the dentist for check ups can often pick up on any changes in your mouth but you should always be aware of any white marks, small swellings or sore spots. There may also be areas of numbness or small patches of rough raised skin, or you might notice that there’s a difference in the way that your jaws fit together when you close your mouth. No matter what the exact issue is, whether it’s pain or swellings or discomfort when you move your tongue or jaw, make sure that you talk to your dentist – remember that no problem is too small or insignificant when it comes to your health.

Protecting What Matters Most: How To Keep Your Home Safe From Any Disaster

Protecting What Matters Most: How To Keep Your Home Safe From Any Disaster

hands-1176674_960_720https://pixabay.com/p-1176674/?no_redirect

Your home is the place where you should feel the safest and most secure. It’s more than just bricks and mortar, it’s your own little bubble to escape from the stress and pressures of the world no matter what is happening. You should never feel as though you or your family are unsafe in your own home. Which makes it all the more horrible when something does happen to disrupt that safety. Whether it’s a flood, fire or break-in, anything that makes you feel less safe in your own home can have devastating effects on you and your family. Fortunately, there are plenty of things that you can do to keep your home as safe as possible.

Lights

It might sound overly simple, but lights can be one of the best possible defenses against an intruder. Darkness is an intruder’s number one ally. If they have a way to slip into your home undetected, then that’s what they’re going to use. The best thing that you can do is to invest in floodlights for both the front and rear of your home. Not only do they keep your children safe as they ensure you can always seem them, even if they’re in the garden at night, it stops intruders having anywhere to hide. Go to Strictly LED’s for more information; they have a huge stock of LED flood lights to choose from.

An alarm system

home_intruder_alarm_systemhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Home_Intruder_Alarm_system.JPG

The funny thing about an alarm system is that, if you’re lucky, you’ll never really need it. But nothing is better for giving you and your family the peace of mind that you need than the knowledge that no one is able to get into your home without you knowing. The worst thing about a break-in is often the knowledge that someone else was in your home and you didn’t know it; an alarm system helps you avoid that feeling and will make it far easier to get a good night’s sleep.

Insurance

If something awful does happen, it’s important to make sure that you’re protected. Not only do you need home insurance but it’s a good idea to take out contents insurance as well. Make sure that you’re covered no matter what happens to your home. The last thing you want is for something to happen and then to find out that you’re not covered.

Be prepared

The most important thing to keep safe in your home is, of course, your family. The best way that you can ensure that they are safe is to have clear plans in the event of any problems. Make sure that you all know exactly what to do in the event of a fire or flood. That way you won’t have to worry about everyone panicking and making the situation even worse than it needs to be. This doesn’t mean you should make your family constantly afraid but it’s always better to be prepared than to be caught unawares.

When The Home Strikes Back, Cut Costs On Your Property

When The Home Strikes Back, Cut Costs On Your Property

Buying a home sounds like a dream doesn’t it? Until you realize that what you’re actually taking on is a whole lot of extra bills and costs that you might not have been prepared for. If you’ve been renting for a long time, the costs that come with owning a home and not just purchasing it can be overwhelming. It’s important that you understand how to deal with these costs effectively without ending up in more trouble. Many people do find themselves pushed into debt as they struggle with higher costs than they initially expected. So, before we get into how to deal with them, let’s think about some of the costs that you might need to handle.

First, there’s maintenance and if you’ve been renting you’ll be used to your landlord coughing up the bill. Maintenance and repairs can be quite expensive too. Just look at your boiler. If that breaks down a repair could take thousands out of your pocket. Thousands that you, might not have readily available to spend. Issues with maintenance can be due to age or even weather. We’re in the middle of winter right now, and you can bet there are at least a few storms around the corner to deal with. You could have problems with flooding, roof damage, and even garden destruction. All these issues are going to be expensive to fix, and they’re not the only problem.

You might also find that your home bills grow out of control. Again, it’s easy to keep these costs under your thumb in a one bedroom apartment. But when you move to a four bedroom home things are a little different. The heating bill, the water, the electric all quickly rise and leave you with very little money to spend at the end of the month.

Finally, there’s the mortgage. Most people buy to escape dead money. While a mortgage isn’t dead money it can certainly feel like it. Particularly when more is coming out of your account, then it did when you were living in a rented property. You might have been paying five hundred in rent and now you’re paying close to a thousand in monthly mortgage repayments. Now, you are paying off the house that you own, but it can still feel rather unsettling. Particularly, when it’s put pressure on your finances. So, how can you cope with these issues?

When you buy a home, it’s important that you live on a budget and don’t overspend in silly areas. You never know when you might need your savings. So, don’t spend it all on an expensive holiday if it means you’re going to have nothing left for emergencies. You might think well, I only need that if something goes wrong. I promise you, as soon as you think that it well. It’s best to keep this money in a high-interest account too. That way, you can make sure it builds up to a level where you’ll always have a little cash you can rely on.

Don’t Rule Out Borrowing

578252290_1fc5414408_zCredit Link

Desperate times call for desperate measures. If you reach the end of the month and your bills are too much to bare it is worth looking into borrowing. By borrowing, you can keep things simple and protect your credit score as well as keeping those mortgage repayments up to date. This is worth doing because it will save you any hassle further down the line. Don’t forget, your mortgage company can make things difficult if you fall behind on your payment schedule.

However, there are a few things you need to know before using short term funds. First, you need to think about the interest rate. Make sure that you can pay any money you borrow back on time without any issues. Then there’s the company that you borrow from. They need to be reputable and make sure that there are no hidden bills. You’d be amazed how many companies manage to slip these into their lending contracts. Finally, if you think the interest rate or amount you’ve been charged is too high, you do have rights. Though, if you choose a good, trustworthy business, should never need to go down that road.

Bite Back At Your Bills

money-256312_960_720Pixabay Link

If your bills are looking quite expensive, it’s time to think about how you can cut them down. One of the ways to do this is by looking at your water usage. If you love long showers or running a bath each day, think about how much this is costing you. Remember, a few little changes to your bathroom will work a treat. You can get a low-pressure pump for your shower. This will limit how much water is released when you have a shower. Don’t worry, there’ll still be enough to get clean but not enough that it feels too pleasant. You’ll be in and out in ten minutes flat and save a fortune on your water bill. There are other silly ways people waste water too like running the tap while brushing your teeth. This water isn’t doing anything so don’t make that mistake.

For electricity it’s all about your tech and appliances. You need to make sure you are using green tech in the home. By doing this, you’ll soon see your electric bill drain away. You can even think about making larger changes such as solar energy. But honestly, you’ll see the impact even if you just change the bulbs in your home to LEDs.

For heating, you need to try and keep warm without burning up your thermostat. The best way to do that is to wear extra layers and trap heat as much as possible. Close the doors and shut the curtains, you’ll be amazed by the difference it makes. You won’t have to turn the heating up because it will be warm enough already.

Remember, unless you’re over sixty there’s no reason to have the heating on at all. Except in the coldest weeks of winter.

I hope this advice helps you deal with those expensive home costs. Use it, and you won’t be looking at your bank balance in despair at the end of each month.
