Over the phone

If there is one thing that is true about winter, it’s that it can be very, very cold. Apart from heading out for the odd Christmas parties, most people tend to spend their evenings around Christmas time sheltering from the elements at home. Unfortunately, unless your dream partner just happens to walk through your door, this isn’t a very productive way to meet someone! A few people resort to online dating, but often the risk of being catfished puts a lot of us off. But if you still want to get to know someone from the comfort of your own home, why not try calling a free chat line? Often, hearing someone’s voice is a great indicator of whether you will get along or not – something that is all too easy to misjudge over a computer screen. The good thing is that there’s nothing to lose; simply pick up the phone and give it a try.

By meeting your neighbors

Christmas is a time that promises ‘goodwill to all men’. Whether you are religious or not, there is certainly no better time of year to invest in some random acts of kindness. Taking a little Christmas gift to each of your neighbors is a great way to spread some festive cheer – and who knows, you might get chatting to that cute guy four doors down as well! It doesn’t need to be anything expensive. A simple greetings card and a festive piece of candy are all you really need. If you are feeling bold, why not write your phone number in one of the cards? Just make sure you give it to the right person!

At your work Christmas party

Work Christmas parties have become somewhat notorious for becoming raucous and for seeing colleagues get a little bit closer with each other than perhaps they would have liked. However, if you don’t mind the cliché, there’s no reason why your office party can’t be the ideal setting for you to make a move on your work crush. A little tipple can be good for settling your nerves, but make sure you don’t drink too much. After all, if it doesn’t work out how you want it to, you still need to see him at work the next day! Use the festive atmosphere as an excuse to work your charm and see where the night takes you.

The Scary Ways In Which Water Can Damage Your Home – And How To Be More Prepared

The Scary Ways In Which Water Can Damage Your Home – And How To Be More Prepared

As many people know, the elements of our world need to be respected. Even though we live in a time full of technological advancements, the one thing we will probably never be able to control is the weather. The past few years have seen a whole hoard of freak weather spells hit our planet – some with disastrous effects. This can be a little disconcerting, especially if you live somewhere that is likely to be hit.

One of the scariest elements that many of us have to deal with is water. Water can be an extremely powerful force that humans, unfortunately, are generally not equipped to deal with. It can also cause great damage in our homes, sometimes rendering them uninhabitable after a particularly bad incident. Therefore, it can be a good idea to learn how to waterproof your home as best as you can to minimize the effects of water damage.

A leaky roof

One of the more common types of water damage that many homeowners experience is the leaky roof. High winds and heavy rain can cause shingles on our roofs to dislodge, resulting in a hole that continuing rain can get through. This can lead to a full-scale leak, which can be incredibly dangerous. Not only can it cause damage to your attic or your interior ceiling, it can also be a severe fire hazard if the leak passes nearby any electrical sources. For this reason, it is always best to make sure that your roof is secure if you are expecting any adverse weather. Contact local Roofing Companies who will be able to look over your roof and suggest any measures that may need to be taken.

Burst pipes

Burst pipes are another fairly common cause of water damage in the home. They occur mostly during the winter months, where your home may experience freezing temperatures. In order to prevent burst pipes, your home should be kept at a minimum heat of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, even when you are out of the property. Otherwise, the water in the pipes may freeze, causing a buildup of pressure and ultimately causing them to burst and potentially flood your home. You may also wish to take extra measures such as wrapping your pipes with an insulating material to make sure they stay reasonably warm.

External flooding

If your town or city experiences an unnatural amount of rainfall, your home may be at risk of external flooding. Sometimes, community drainage systems are not well equipped enough to deal with very heavy rainfall, and this can lead to flooding in the local area. If your home is particularly low-lying, you may want to check that your own drainage systems are working properly. It is also worth checking that nothing is blocking your guttering. It is a good idea to get hold of some sandbags to keep as much water out of your property as you can, and to move any electric or valuable items to the top floor of your home. Flooding can be devastating, but by taking on board some of this advice you can hopefully escape relatively unscathed.

If your home has suffered extreme damage from flooding both internally and externally, it can be helpful to hire Water Damage Restoration experts who can help you to rebuild your property in a way that removes any unsafe water damage and carry out repairs that address the damage that has been caused and rectifies in a safe manner. This can help you to avoid having to hire different contractors to carry out the work required and give you peace of mind that not only has all water damage been identified but dried out thoroughly before any other starts.

How to Clean Your Home Without Causing Allergies!

Do you know what is in the cleaning products you are buying?

The EU and many other countries ban them, but in the United States, many of these toxic chemicals are still found in cleaning products such as bleach. These include sodium lauryl sulphate, formaldehyde and ammonia. If ingested these can poison and possibly kill someone. Even if sprayed or used on an item or surface, they can cause allergies; especially among children.

There are some top tips, however, on how to cut these dangerous substances out of your life, save some money and have a healthier, more natural home which is still clean. These tips even work for baby products, toys, and clothing. I have written an in-depth guide which explores the different chemicals, what they do to you, and how you can use lemon juice and white vinegar to create totally natural cleaning products for your home.

Want To Feel Stronger? It’s All In Your Bones (And These Great Exercises)

Want To Feel Stronger? It’s All In Your Bones (And These Great Exercises)

When most people embark upon an exercise plan, it is usually for one of two reasons: to improve general fitness, or for weight loss. There are hundreds of different diet and exercise plans that exist, written by various health professionals, which claim to give you great results. But as we are so focused on losing fat or gaining muscle, we often forget one other very important part of our bodies, and that is our bones. When you choose to invest time and effort into taking care of your bones, you are making a lifelong investment. We only have one set of bones to last us a lifetime, after all. Plus, what with many bone disorders being related to old age, keeping strong bones in your younger years can lower the risk of you being affected in the future. So if fitness is your thing, how can you switch up your workouts so that you focus more on building up bone strength?

Muscle-building activities

If you love lifting weights, you will be pleased to know that this is an easy way to help promote bone strength and development. Any resistance caused by the lifting of weights strengthens the muscles and the tendons. As all our bones are surrounded by muscles and tendons which help our bones to work normally, this can help support them. However, be aware that lifting weights that are too heavy could cause damage to your bones, especially if you are not trained in how to lift correctly. Always speak to a professional before attempting any kind of weight training.

Weight exercises

In order to build strong bones, it is best to engage in any activity that requires you to stand on your own two feet. This could be something such as running, or you may choose to take part in a fitness-based class such as Zumba. When you are supporting your own bodyweight, your feet and your legs have to work harder, in turn making them stronger. You should be able to do these exercises for a fairly long period of time providing that the impact of them is not too high. For example, running for a long time on a very hard surface can put you at risk of shin splints, so be mindful of where you are exercising. Taking some time out and learning the bones can help you understand what is good for your body and what isn’t.

Low-impact exercises

Sometimes, our bones can come into difficulty, or perhaps we have an accident that causes a fracture. If this is something that has happened to you, you may think that you need to avoid exercise for the foreseeable future. Whilst it is advisable to let your body rest and recover after an injury, there are still some workouts you can do that will keep your bones healthy even in ‘time off’. These are low intensity exercises such as swimming and cycling – basically anything that doesn’t ‘jolt’ the skeleton too much. Stick with these until you are fully recovered and then you can go back to your usual routine.

5 Tips for Hosting an Amazing Holiday Party

5 Tips for Hosting an Amazing Holiday Party

pixbay

If you’re gearing up to host a holiday party, there are a few tips and tricks you should use to make sure your party is a hit instead of a flop. By avoiding some of the most common hosting mistakes and using some easy holiday party hacks, you’re sure to throw an amazing holiday party that people will be talking about for years to come.

1. Make your theme known

The last thing you want to do is have people show up in cocktail attire when you’re wearing your snazziest ugly sweater. That’s why you include your theme when you send your invitations. And, let’s face it – a theme makes things a lot easier for you because you can tailor your menu, décor, and entertainment to match your theme and make it a seamless party from beginning to end.

You can stick with tried-and-true themes like Winter Wonderland and Ugly Sweater Contest, or you can get nostalgic with A Christmas Story or White Christmas. No matter which theme you choose, be sure to tie it into your drinks and tablescapes to really amaze your guests.

2. Up your cocktail game

Sure, you can serve the old standby cocktails at your party, but why not get creative and knock the holiday socks right off your guests. Try making festive cocktails by pouring champagne and Perrier over pink cotton candy. Or, try a spiced citrus cocktail with cranberry syrup, vodka lemonade, and gumdrop skewers. Whatever cocktails you choose, be sure they tie into your theme.

3. Think outside the box with your decorations

If you don’t want to go through the mess of hauling a freshly-cut tree into your home, or if you don’t want to spend a ton of cash on new decorations for your holiday party, just think outside the box for your décor. Pile books in a corner and drape with lights to make a Christmas tree. Float cranberries in mason jars with floating candles, or place a sturdy pillar candle in the middle of a hurricane, fill with a few inches of water, and then float cranberries to surround the candle. Purchase some clear balloons and fill them with glitter before inflating them or having a local party store inflate them with helium for you.

If you want to make your home cozy for your party, make some homemade potpourri with oranges, cinnamon, cranberries, cloves, and nutmeg. You can simmer it on the stove in a pot or purchase a small Crock Pot for simmering. Other items that create a cozy feel include essential oils such as peppermint and pine. Use a diffuser or put a few drops in a bowl of pine cones or yarn balls.

4. Don’t forget the games

While you don’t want to make guests feel like they’re running a marathon because you have planned too many activities, you should plan a few games that will keep the party hopping. A few favorites that are sure to get some laughs are Christmas Carol Pictionary and Minute to Win It. Remember to make a list of items you’ll need for the games ahead of time because it’s easy to overlook the supplies for the games in the chaos of preparing for the party.

5. Crowd-pleasing food

Your guests will arrive hungry, and you should have crowd-pleasing food that won’t break your budget or take you hours to prepare. Simple finger foods like bruschetta, bean dip with pita chips, apple fritters, and stuffed mushrooms look like you spent a ton of time making food but take little time to make and are easy to eat.

Whatever food you plan, make sure it ties into your theme (see tips #2 and #3) and is something that you can prepare or at least partially prepare ahead of time. You won’t feel like you’ve thrown an amazing party if you’ve missed most of it because you were in the kitchen practically the whole time.

Throwing an amazing holiday party takes a bit of forethought and preparation, but if you follow these tips, you’re sure to throw one of the top holiday parties this season.
