5 Ways to Find the Help You Need to Stay Healthy This Winter

This year has shown us how important it is to take care of ourselves and the ones around us. At the same time, the months spent indoors, the travel restrictions, and social distancing measures have made it incredibly challenging to remain happy, healthy, and motivated. And, now that winter is here, there are even fewer occasions to spend a sunny afternoon in the garden. However, all this makes it crucial to understand how you can support yourself throughout these challenging months. Below are some steps you can take to work towards perfect health.

It All Starts Within Yourself

You – and your mind – are much more in control of yourself or what you think. Even if you have found the past months difficult to deal with, it might be the right time to discover what your mind can do when stimulated. For this, there is no need to sign up for a course or retreat. Instead, you might decide to learn something new or start meditation sessions to gain a better understanding of yourself and your mind.

Reach Out to the Ones Around You

Over the past months, we have all been dealing with sky-high levels of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. The travel restrictions and social distancing measures have made it even harder to cultivate those relationships that are the closest to our hearts. However, technology, this time can help! Make sure you schedule regular catch up calls and coffee chats with your friends and family.

Rethink Your Habits

Your lifestyle has a greater impact on your well-being than you would think. For example, the way you start your days can impact the hours ahead or even your entire time. Nutrition is also crucial in looking after your body. Through the right foods, you can start detoxing, feeling more energized, and love yourself a little more!

If you are not sure how to change your habits under this aspect, you might consider speaking to a professional nutritionist who can guide you along the journey. You might also consider trying a different way of eating such as plant-based diets or organic nutritional regimes.

Find Support in Nature

We all tend to spend most of our time indoors, something that has been made even worse by the various lockdowns we have gone through. However, sometimes, there is nothing more therapeutic than getting out of your four walls and reconnecting with nature. Just a short walk in a park, forest, or beachfront can help you breathe in the fresh air and benefit from sunlight. Studies have even confirmed that being in contact with nature can have healing properties and help you feel better emotionally.

Find Professional Help

Sometimes, you might need the guidance and help of an expert in the field. The past months have been challenging for everybody, and it is only natural to need additional help. Getting in touch with professionals such as those at Meridian Psychiatric Partners can help you identify the right path to work on your emotional health and go back to living your life to the fullest.

How to Survive Lockdown With Your Partner

It’s a difficult time for everyone at the moment. There are lockdowns going on over the world, and people are unable to do many of the activities that once brought them joy. There are restrictions on going out for dinner or drinking at bars, and don’t even think about going to a concert or sports event in the foreseeable future. As winter continues to settle in, more and more people will find themselves stuck at home for long periods of time. You may be working from home or unemployed due to the pandemic. Perhaps you’ve had to self-isolate or shield to reduce your risk.

Whatever your reasons for being stuck at home, it can be an incredibly frustrating and isolating experience. Having a loved one to share the experience with can help, but it can also present challenges of its own. You may think spending more time with your partner at home would help strengthen your relationship, but if you’re not careful it could do just the opposite. When you are together 24/7, with little room to get away, you may find yourself getting increasingly annoyed with one another. Your partner’s habits will go from cute to unbearable in the blink of an eye, and you may find yourself engaging in constant shouting matches and passive-aggressive silences.

But if you are prepared for the challenges of being stuck indoors together, you will be better equipped to avoid putting a strain on your relationship. To help your love make it through the winter, here are a few helpful tips for surviving lockdown with your partner.

Face issues together

You and your partner are both completely different people with different minds, experiences, and habits. One of you may be coping perfectly well with the situation, while the other is silently suffering. It’s important that you are open and honest with each other about how you are feeling, and face your anxieties and worries together. If you bottle up your emotions inside, they will eventually overwhelm you and lead to cracks in your relationship. Keep an open line of communication and constantly check in with one another. Speak up about any irritations you have as well. Perhaps your partner puts the heating on too high or leaves their clothes all over the floor. You probably have some habits that annoy them too, so talk about them together and be prepared to make compromises.

Give each other space

No matter how in love you are, everyone needs some alone time now and then. But if you’re stuck at home together day and night, this space is harder to achieve than you would like. Make sure you schedule some alone time every day, to give your thoughts a chance to breathe and check in with yourself. You could go for a long winter walk, or spend an hour in the bath with a scented candle and a cup of tea. Once you return to your partner you will be in a much better frame of mind.

Visiting Family This Christmas? 10 Ways To Prepare To Make It The Best One Yet

Visiting Family This Christmas? 10 Ways To Prepare To Make It The Best One Yet

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone around the world thanks to Coronavirus, and after such a terrible year, you might be looking forward to celebrating Christmas and putting this year to bed once and for all. And what better way to celebrate Christmas than being surrounded by your family and friends? After a year that’s been difficult for everyone, let’s look at these amazing ways to prepare to make Christmas the best one yet, so that you can move into 2021 feeling positive and ready to conquer!

https://pixabay.com/photos/decorating-christmas-tree-santa-2999722/

Get everyone involved

Depending on where you live, there might still be restrictions in place that may hinder you from seeing everyone this Christmas, but that doesn’t mean anyone has to miss out! Form your Christmas gathering bubbles and set up a zoom call with other family members so that nobody has to miss out! That way, even if someone is unfortunate enough to be isolating on Christmas day, you’re still able to see each other and spend Christmas together as a unit. If you’ve got a smart TV and a HDMI cable, you could even project your zoom call to your TV to make it seem like they’re really there with you!

Check your car

The roads can be treacherous during the winter time, and if you’re travelling a significant distance to visit your family this Christmas, it’s a good idea to check your car beforehand. You could do this yourself by checking the amount of oil in the car, pumping up your tires, and even getting snow chains for your wheels if you expect to drive through snow. Alternatively, take your car to your local garage for a service and ask them for advice on staying safe on the roads during the winter time.

Buy personalised gifts

More than any other Christmas, this one needs to be special. This year has seen the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, some of whom you might know, not to mention millions of jobs and businesses being lost along the way. Make this Christmas the best one yet by purchasing personalised gifts for your loved ones. There’s something so heartwarming about receiving a personalised gift and let’s face it, you want to see your loved ones happy! There are plenty of personalised gifts you can buy online, but if you know somewhere local that personalizes items, support your local business!

Create a Christmas playlist

In previous years the mere mention of Christmas songs usually turns people away from the idea of Christmas, especially when the radio stations begin playing them before people have gotten into the Christmas spirit. Well, Christmas is well and truly upon us, so create a playlist full of everyone’s favourites and have it on in the background while celebrating on Christmas Day! It’s surprising how much Christmas songs can really lift your spirits (especially if you’re a mulled wine or two down).

Start a new tradition

Every family has their own tradition at Christmas time, whether it’s eating breakfast together before opening gifts or watching a particular film after Christmas dinner as a family, they’re a great way of bringing a family closer than ever. Why not start a new one this year? The great thing about traditions is that it doesn’t necessarily have to make sense! They can be personal, or if you like, something fun for the family to take part in each year. Stuck for ideas? Here’s some Christmas tradition ideas for inspiration.

Indulge in your favourite foods!

Looking after your waistline is great, but now’s the time to treat yourself! If there’s one thing that’s as good as being around those you love, it’s being surrounded by your favourite foods at the same time! So eat that minced pie, and treat yourself to another chocolate from the selection tin!

Take lots of pictures

While many of us live our lives precariously through social media and the images we see of other people’s lives, it’s still amazing looking back at old photos and remembering everything that was happening at that particular time. Even if you don’t share your photos on social media – be sure to take lots of pictures! In years to come you can look back and remember how you ended 2020 in style!

Play board games

It sounds so cliche, but there’s something so nostalgic about sitting with your family and playing a good old fashioned board game. You could try new games, twisting the rules slightly, or even making a rule that the loser must take a drink. If you are hosting a Zoom Christmas, encourage your family members on the other end to play, too! If you’re not a fan of board games, you could try other family games such as playing cards, or even using apps like House Party to play games with your loved ones.

Take a group walk

It’s almost a rite of passage to over eat on Christmas Day, and as a race we look forward to over indulging and serving up way more food than we can eat. However, every year you end up way too full and regret eating so much. Take your family for a walk around your town to help burn off some of the extra calories you’ve consumed. You could plan a route to admire people’s Christmas decorations, and pack insulated flasks with delicious hot chocolate to keep everyone warm. If you’re celebrating with children, you could create an “eye spy” game to keep them entertained along the way.

Have another glass of mulled wine

If you enjoy a glass of wine (or indeed, any other drink) every now and then, then why not treat yourself to another glass? After all, it’s Christmas right?!

Let’s wave goodbye to 2020 in style with those you love! Remember to check your local restrictions to see how many people you can mix with and any other rules to adhere to. The sooner COVID isn’t a threat the better! Merry Christmas!

Hair Loss: 4 Ways You Can Support Your Man

Hair Loss: 4 Ways You Can Support Your Man

Pixabay – CC0 Licence

Most guys don’t know this, but hair loss can start as early as the late teens in men. As his partner, it’s your job to help your guy through this difficult transition, especially if he’s taking it poorly. Plus, you want him to look his best, in the same way, that your beau does for you.

Of course, it’s often easy to do more harm than good when you’re trying to lend a hand. This is particularly true if he’s touchy about the subject. So, what can you do to show your support? Here are four options for women.

Show Him He’s Not Alone

Although the research is out there, it’s tempting for people to deal with their issues the old-fashioned way – ignoring it! Men aren’t the best at dealing with emotions, so there’s a chance your guy is doing this to try and cope. Therefore, proving that he isn’t the only person going through the process is a step in the right direction as it removes the stigma and embarrassment. You can tell him that 66% of men are affected by hair loss by the time they reach 35, according to Healthline. That way, he shouldn’t feel as isolated.

Help Him Protect What He’s Got

The best form of defense is to protect what hair he has left since it won’t grow back without some form of invasive surgery. With that in mind, you can buy hair loss-related presents to encourage him to take better care of his follicles. My Hair has a kit that is very popular because it’s designed to target the main problems, such as dandruff and protein deficiency. Alternatively, Alpecin is a German-engineered shampoo that helps the scalp absorb caffeine and boost hair follicles.

Focus On Stress

When something plays on a person’s mind, the negative emotions won’t go away until the stress dissipates. Hair loss in men can lead to high levels of cortisol, which then encourages poor mental health. Thankfully, loved ones have the power to reduce tension by taking their minds off their issues. Doing activities he enjoys, such as walking, could be the answer as you can pick a secluded spot where he doesn’t have to worry about his appearance and forget about life for a bit.

Let Him Know You Love Him

Showing how much you care can be the difference between men coming to terms with their hairline and pushing the feelings even deeper down. It’s not only about love, either, but attraction. Losing hair makes guys feel as if they aren’t as good-looking or desirable, which leads to inadequacy and low self-esteem. So, as well as showing him that you care, you should talk about the attractive personality traits that you’ll love, regardless of how he looks. Outlining them should help your man to see there’s more to life than looks.

The key is not to push him. You should support him however you can, but he needs to take the lead and open up about his thoughts and feelings.

How To Get Your Guy To Always Look His Best

How To Get Your Guy To Always Look His Best

(Pixnio CC0)

Picture the scene: It’s date night, and you have spent the day getting yourself ready for the special evening ahead with your guy. You have taken a shower, organized your evening wear, and carefully applied your beauty products. You’re good to go.

Your partner on the other hand…

If he isn’t looking his best, perhaps because he hasn’t made the effort, you’re going to be pretty upset! This might even taint your date night, as you might be a little angry and embarrassed if he hasn’t bothered to care about his appearance.

So, how can you make sure he always looks his best in the future?

#1: Buy nice clothes for him

Some guys prefer to do their own clothes shopping, but there are also those who are content to wear whatever they have owned for the last ‘x’ number of years. If it’s a case of the latter with your guy, it might be that you should gift him nice clothes occasionally, perhaps on his birthday, at Christmas, or on any random occasion. You do need to be careful. of course. You will need to know his size, and you will need to know what he is likely to wear, as you might make matters worse if you buy something ill-fitting and against his taste. But if you do your homework first, you should be able to buy him something that looks good, and as it’s a gift, he might be more likely to wear it.

#2: Add items to your supermarket basket

When you’re out shopping, look for the best deodorants for your guy if you know he doesn’t have any. And look for the right shampoos for your guy too, and even the best oil-based pomade if you know he would benefit. When he has the right products at home, he will be more likely to use them, even if you do need to point him in the right direction occasionally. So, consider what he is short of and unlikely to buy himself, and add them to your supermarket basket.

#3: Compliment him when he does make the effort

We all like to be complimented, so when he does do something to make the effort with his appearance, let him know how good he looks. This form of encouragement might make him make more of an effort again in the future, not only because he knows he looks good, but because he knows it makes you happy too.

#4: Gently educate him

Some guys want to look good but they don’t know how to do it. They might be clueless when it comes to choosing their own wardrobe, and they might not know the first thing about hair or skincare. So, direct him to fashion sites where he will pick up a few top tips, and bookmark any articles you find, such as our post on men’s skincare. Maybe look for a few YouTube tutorials too, but in all that you do, don’t force these things on him. Simply encourage him to take a look in his own time, without making a big deal about it. This way, he won’t feel as if you are nagging him in any way.

With these tips, your guy should (hopefully) look his best the next time you’re out together! Leave a comment below if you have any other advice for our readers.

Why Breathing Right is So Important

Why Breathing Right is So Important

If you’ve ever felt short of breath or experienced tightness in your chest, you’ll know just how uncomfortable it can be when your breathing is impaired. Of course, most people take breathing for granted but few of us are doing it ‘right’. How you breathe has a major impact on your physical health and your emotional well-being, even if you don’t realize it.

How Does Breathing Affect the Body?

Your breathing has a direct impact on your blood pressure and your heart rate. If you’ve ever noticed how your heart races when you feel anxious, this reaction is often triggered because of a subconscious change in your breathing pattern. When you get nervous or anxious, you take more shallow breaths and, as a result, your heart rate and blood pressure increase.

In addition to this, your breathing impacts how well your muscles are able to function. If you take shallow breaths, rather than deep breaths, you use the muscles surrounding your collarbone and neck, instead of your diaphragm. However, tightness in the muscles or poor posture impairs their ability to function adequately, which can make you feel like you’re not taking in enough air.

Can Breathing Affect the Mind?

Yes. Your emotions can have an impact on your breathing, but the reverse is true too, which is why breathing right is great for mental health. If you’re not breathing properly, it can fuel anxiety, rather than diminish it. This can lead to a vicious cycle where your anxiety affects your breathing and, in turn, your breathing exacerbates your anxiety, often leading to a panic attack.

In addition to this, consistent, short, shallow breaths can make you feel more stressed and overwhelmed. When your blood isn’t filled with oxygen-rich air, it can also cause confusion, which can make you feel even more out of your depth. Furthermore, breathing too rapidly can cause your carbon dioxide levels to drop, which can lead to a feeling of panic, dizziness, faintness, and/or nausea.

How to Optimize Your Breathing

Now you know why it’s so important to breathe‘ right’, you’ll want to do everything you can to optimize your breathing patterns. Firstly, it’s important to ensure that the air you’re breathing in is as fresh and clean as possible. By having air ducts in your home professionally cleaned by DUCTZ, for example, you can ensure the air quality in your property isn’t having a negative impact on your well-being. Similarly, keeping your home well-ventilated will help to ensure you have constant access to fresh air.

Once you’ve taken steps to enhance the air quality, take a look at these top tips for improving your breathing patterns:

1. Keep Your Chest Still

If your chest rises and falls with each breath, it probably means you’re taking shallow breaths. Many people are surprised to learn that your chest doesn’t really need to move in order for you to breathe properly. When you’re learning how to take deep, diaphragmatic breaths, aim to keep your chest as still as you can.

2. Inhale Through Your Nose

Instead of gulping air in through your mouth, aim to inhale slowly through your nose. As you do so, place your hand on your belly and notice how it expands slightly as you draw breath into your body.

3. Exhale Through Your Mouth

When you’re ready to exhale, try to engage your stomach muscles. You can do this by attempting to pull your muscles towards your spine. As you exhale, purse your lips and allow the air to be expelled via your mouth.

Use Your Posture to Enhance Your Breathing

If you have poor posture, you may experience back or neck discomfort, but you may not realize that the way you stand, sit, and move could be affecting your breathing too. If you’re sitting in a hunched-over position, for example, your stomach muscles won’t be able to fully engage as you exhale.

By practicing good posture, you can breathe far more effectively, particularly when you’re learning how to take deep breaths from the diaphragm. When you first start experimenting with new breathing techniques, try to practice will you’re standing up or lying down, rather than sitting. This will help you to activate the appropriate muscles and allow you to feel the difference between taking shallow and deep breaths.

Breathe Mindfully

When you’re used to taking short or shallow breaths, it’s easy to overlook the impact it has on your well-being. However, once you begin to feel the difference that deep breathing makes, you’ll be acutely aware of how good it feels. By taking the time to practice deep breathing techniques every day and by being mindful about your breathing, you can enjoy the physical, mental and emotional benefits it brings.

Of course, money isn’t the most important thing in life, but it does help you to reach the goals that you have set for yourself and be able to afford the things that you want. If you want to live a life of luxury working hard is definitely going to be a part of the process, and there is simply no way around it.

If you are one of the people who find themselves into a position to do this, then we highly recommend that you do. Even if you think that it’s not something particularly appealing to you right now, we can almost guarantee that you’re going to have a fantastic time. As long as you ensure that you have all the details planned out, such as what flight you are getting, where exactly you are staying, make sure that you rent your car in advance, and so on, then everything is going to be fine.

It would be such a shame to stay in the same place for your entire life when there is the possibility of you to explore. You can see how other people live, the things that they do, and the way they are. It’s an experience, if nothing else.

Maintain Relationships

People are always going to be an important part of living your best life. Even if you aren’t a people person, you can’t deny that it’s nice to have someone around. So, do what it takes to maintain your relationships, as long as it doesn’t damage your health or mental health. Learn to say you’re sorry. Learn to forgive when people mess up. We hope that you have found this article helpful and now see some of the things that you can do if you’re interested in living your best life one day at a time. Take it slow, and do what is best for you because at the end of the day, that’s what all of this is about.

Moving In With Your Partner: Tips To Make It Easier On Both Of You

Moving In With Your Partner: Tips To Make It Easier On Both Of You

For many couples, a significant step in their relationship is when they decide to move in together. A lot of people who have been there and done it before are going to warn you that this is one of the most challenging but exciting times in your relationship. The chances are, if you have got to that point, you are going to do it anyway.   After all, what is the worst that could happen?

We can tell you now that no matter how much you love someone and how well you think you will fit together, moving in with each other and learning to share a space, compromise on things, and live with each other’s bad habits can cause some tension. To try to keep things as easy and positive as possible, we share some tips on moving in with your partner.

Image via Unsplash CCO

Learn to let some things go

By this, we mean physically – and emotionally.

For most couples, moving in together means losing some space, and that means that your shoe collection to rival Carrie Bradshaws might just need cutting down, or his Star Wars Lego collection might just need shelving – permanently. It is a good opportunity to declutter and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. It also makes it easier, and cheaper, for your moving services.

In terms of emotionally letting things go – there are going to be things that your partner does that annoy you. Perhaps they leave the lid off the toothpaste or plump the cushions up on the couch when they get up. You need to challenge any big issues but some things, you just have to learn to let go of. As the saying goes, pick your battles. Some are just not worth fighting.

Consider buying versus renting

There are some significant advantages and disadvantages to each of these and it is wise to weigh them up before diving in. While buying a home together gives you much more stability and ownership than renting, it is also a huge financial commitment. Renting is much easier to deal with if you were to separate, although you are not getting the advantage of owning your own property.

Make sure you both have space

When you live together, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of living in each other’s pockets, spending every waking – and sleeping – moment together. That worlds for some couples, but most will benefit from having a little time and space on their own. Do not ditch your friends and hobbies – this gives you valuable time to be your own person.

Divide chores and responsibilities up before you move in

Before you take the step of moving in together, make sure you sort out and talk through who is responsible for what, so that chores and responsibilities are shared evenly. One person being responsible for everything can cause tension and arguments, so it is better to sort it out well before it hits that point.

Home Maintenance You Should Never Put Off

Home Maintenance You Should Never Put Off

Home maintenance and repairs can be time-consuming, expensive, and boring, so it’s easy to decide some problems can be safely ignored until you feel like getting round to sorting them out. Unfortunately, by putting off these repairs, the problems can get worse, making them more difficult and expensive to put right. Here are the home maintenance tasks that you should never put off.

Image – free for commercial use

Concrete Cracks

A small crack in any kind of concrete can very quickly turn into a large crack, which can lead to a potentially dangerous problem, especially in the Winter. If water gets into a crack like this, it can freeze and expand, widening the crack and compromising the structural integrity of the whole section of concrete. You can repairs cracks with a quick-setting filler or a mortar mix in order to prolong the life of the steps, walkways, and patios, and to stop a small gap landing you with a big repair bill.

Clogged Gutters

Never neglect your guttering. If it isn’t properly maintained, this vital drainage can cause a lot of trouble during the winter, leading to damage from water or ice. If you notice your gutters or downspouts are full of leaves or aren’t draining as they should, give them a good clean. While you’re cleaning, check for any gutter repair that you need. Is the guttering firmly fixed to the house? Do the downspouts drain away from the foundation? These steps might take up your afternoon, a few hours of work is worth it if it prevents you from having to make expensive repairs later on.

Loose Railings

Loose or wobbly railings along your decking, porch, or steps are a sign that there is a weak connection somewhere between one or more of the posts and the frame. This is easy to fix. All you need to do is tighten up the screws or lag bolts in any place that doesn’t feel sturdy. Don’t ignore a wobbly railing. Eventually, the loose rail will give way, leaving you with a broken section of railing, which can be dangerous. It will also be a lot more expensive and time-consuming to repair than just tightening the connections.

Water Warnings

If you notice a water spot on your ceiling, don’t ignore it. While it’s clear that you might have a leak somewhere, the cause is not always easy to spot. You might be dealing with a much bigger problem than a loose roof tile or a build-up of condensation. It’s a good idea to bring in a roofing contractor as soon as you spot a potential problem so you can get a clear idea of what is going on, instead of ignoring it or trying to find the root of the issues yourself.

Driveway Damage

Asphalt is porous, so it’s very important to seal your driveway as soon as you see signs of wear. This prevents damage from rain, snow, ice, sunlight, or drips of oil. If waters get into the asphalt and freezes, it will cause more and wider cracks in the surface. This seepage can also saturate the soil underneath, causing it to shift over time and damage the driveway.

Protecting Your Home From Natural Disasters

Protecting Your Home From Natural Disasters

Image

Winter is a turbulent time of the year, and often coming with it are much harsher weather conditions as well as some risks of flooding and other natural disasters.

If you want to protect your home this season from the risk of natural disasters there are several things you can do. Building and protecting your house this season is more important than ever, and it will give you the peace of mind for years to come that your house is safe.

Here are just some of the ways you can invest in your home to keep it safe this winter.

Consider drainage

Flooding is a risk in winter more than other seasons because it simply rains more often. To prevent your house from flooding, you need to assess the drainage around your house and fix any cracked drains on the exterior of your property. Be sure to unblock the drains and see about installing another one if you don’t have much already.

Install sturdy garage doors

When preparing your home for flooding or wind damage, it is important to have very sturdy doors which can withstand water as well as the force of wind. Install a new garage door as well as doors of your house to ensure you have a solid barrier between yourself and the elements this year.

Invest in a flood barrier

If you live in an area which is low down and at risk of flooding often – it is important to consider a flood barrier. Your flood barrier doesn’t need to be huge, but just enough to divert water away from your property to keep you and your home safe.

Caulk windows and doors

When there is a risk of natural disaster close to your home, you need to be sure that the structure of your house is solid. To do this, be sure that the area around your windows and doors is solid and doesn’t have any holes or cracks that can provide a weak spot for wind and rain. Use caulk to seal around the windows and the doors and protect your access points.

Don’t store cardboard on the floor

If you have a garage or shed alongside your property, one important thing to remember is that you should not store cardboard boxes full of things on the floor. As you know; cardboard is not waterproof and this means if you flood your belongings run the risk of severe water damage. Stick to plastic, or move boxes onto shelving.

Have plans for cleanup

When a natural disaster does hit, not many of us know what to do. It is important for you alongside planning to prevent damage that you have a plan if it happens. You can store the number for a disaster cleanup contractor in your phone incase the worst does happen and at least you will have an expert team of people to help you in your time of need. Be sure to keep the emergency numbers for other services too, so that when the time comes you are ready to take action.
