Yes and no.

You will be better able to achieve your health goals if you commit to any of these and you will also protect the health of your family too. 

#1: Schedule in those all-important healthcare checkups

It’s sometimes the case that we can forget to schedule health appointments when we’re too busy. Or we simply neglect the need to do so and only book appointments when somebody in our family is suffering in any way. However, prevention is often the best way forwards when it comes to our health, so schedule those appointments, even if everybody is feeling fine. If there are any issues, these will be flagged and dealt with before other problems set in. 

6-monthly checkups are recommended when it comes to dental care, for example. And 2-yearly checkups are recommended for the optician. It’s also important to visit the doctor if the adults in your family haven’t had a health screening in a while. And if you haven’t yet done so, you should also book an appointment with the best pediatricians for your children, as regular check-ups are equally as important as they start to grow and age.

We can all be guilty of spending too much time in front of a screen. However, there are health consequences, including those health risks related to a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity can become a major problem for any member of your family who is regularly inactive, and stress, depression, and the risk of diabetes are other consequences. 

If you can limit screen time you will reduce these problems and have more time for physical activity. This might be on the weekend when there is no school or work, or it might be one evening a week when you are all together. Spend time doing something outdoors, perhaps by going for a walk or by taking up a shared hobby. Or on those pesky rainy days, you could use these ideas on keeping your children active indoors

You don’t have to place a screen ban for the entire day as it might be hard to achieve. However, if you can limit screen time as much as possible, there will be more time for exercise, as well as increased bonding time with your family. 

#3: Manage your family’s unhealthy habits

Encourage each member of your family to choose an unhealthy habit that they need to quit or cut back on. For your children, it might be cutting down on sweets or junk food. For the adults in your family, it might be drinking less alcohol or quitting smoking. As we discussed above, another unhealthy habit might include too much screen time. 

To manage these habits, you could make a pact with one another to quit or cut down. You could also promise family rewards if people manage to stick to the goals they set themselves. This can be useful if some people are more resistant to giving up certain things than others. 

As a parent, you can also do what you can to help others. Bringing less junk food into the house and cooking healthier meals is obviously one thing you can do. And you could also find ways to distract yourself and others from unhealthy habits, such as planning activities that don’t involve screen time

#4: Be a good role model

If you want your children to follow healthier habits, you need to role model good behavior. This means no looking at your phone if you have placed limits on screen time. This means no sitting in front of the TV if you have told your children to be more active. And it also means no chomping down on a bar of chocolate if you have told your children they need to eat healthier snacks. 

The actions you take will influence what others do so be mindful. If you can role model healthy habits, such as going for a walk each day, it might be that your family members will follow your good example.

Try and get some exercise every day, even if it’s just a brisk walk. Be aware of your caffeine intake, especially in the afternoons / evenings. Take a hot bath around an hour before bedtime to lower your core temperature, and try keeping a diffuser with ylang ylang, jasmine or lavender essential oils by your bed.   

Keep all of the above in mind, and you’ll ensure a holistic approach to your health while under lockdown.
