Stop Thinking Outside the Box and Get Back In!

Stop Thinking Outside the Box and Get Back In!

It’s 2017. It’s gotten to a point where people are trying too hard to think outside of the box in order to a give a gift that will impress, delight and astound the receiver. It’s hard to do, it takes up a lot of time although the results are probably worth the stress (often, though, this is not the case).

Why aren’t we sticking with the traditional? Is it getting to the point where traditional is the new ‘thinking outside of the box’? If so, clap your hands and cheer because here are the top Valentine’s gifts that will never go out of style.

There are so many alternative sites now that have popped up in an effort to get you to steer away from the traditional flowers and pick something a little less … expected. There are so many different varieties of flower and foliage to put into a bunch or arrangement (did you know that cabbages are even being added in?!)  that there is no chance that you could be boring or stereotypical. Just let the florist know what you’re aiming for and let them surprise you – they’re in this profession because they know what they’re doing. They know what’s in style (yes, flowers have trends), what’s in season and most of all what will look amazing.

Gone are the days of normal, boring chocolates! Artisans are making appearances at pop-up shops, food markets and even online, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they are going over and above the call of duty to make exceptional chocolates for Valentine’s Day – after all, what other day in the year could require such exquisite luxury food to specifically to impress? Don’t even mention Christmas – we’ve just gotten over that.

Balloons are coming back with a vengeance, with some people choosing balloons over flowers and other ornamental decorations to deck-out venues for occasions such as weddings, baptisms and bar/bat mitzvahs. Can you remember how excited you were to get a balloon when you were younger? There’s something about them which is just fun, and you can get them in any style to suit your tastes – even if there is an in-joke about a cartoon character, political figure or any other item you can think of, you can bet there is a balloon to go with it. Although they may not be your go-to when thinking of Valentine’s Day gifts, they will always be super-cute and appreciated.

What’s the point of getting all dressed up to go out on a date if you’re not smelling good? Choosing a perfume or aftershave that you like for your partner will always go down a treat; it may not be a smell that they would have gone for themselves, thus broadening their horizons and scent collection, or you could be replacing a bottle that you know they love. Either way, it’s always good to give yourself a spritz before going on a date. Smell is one powerful sense, and a simple sniff of whatever you were wearing on the night can throw you straight back into the memory. Let’s just hope it was one worth remembering!

Picking Perfect Presents: Gifts For Your Artistic Friends

Picking Perfect Presents: Gifts For Your Artistic Friends

Although you obviously love all your friends, we all know people who we have less in common with than we do with others. You don’t have to love all the same things in order to be friends – maybe you have kids that are a similar age, or you both go to the same yoga class, or you’ve known each other since school, so you have such a long shared history that you’ve got plans to live together when you’re a hundred years old, with five cats and endless pots of tea. That doesn’t mean, however, that your friends are all easy to buy for. Artistic friends can be some of the hardest people of all to buy for – if you don’t share their passions then you might not understand what exactly they love, so you might be afraid to make a blunder. Here are some points that might help…

Take Them Out Somewhere

If in doubt, it’s time to take them out to dinner. Spending time together is probably the number one reason that you’re friends with each other to begin with. Look up new good restaurants in your area, and book a table on a night that you’re sure they can make it. If they’re a single parent, you could even organize and pay for babysitting for them so they can really relax and have a great time and so that you can spend a perfect evening reconnecting with each other.

Buy Them Books

If you know what your friend is interested in – Chekhov plays, for example – then why not buy them a book about them? Go to a big bookstore and talk to whoever works there for some recommendations. In good bookstores, the booksellers will be able to recommend new titles to you – and even if not, or if you feel too shy to talk to them, then you’ll probably find something interesting while you’re browsing, in the area that your friend is interested in.

Less Is More

Remember that simplicity is often key to a good gift. The more aspects there are to it, the more chances there are that your recipient might not like it. Don’t bother with motivational quotes or slogans, or jewelry that’s full of different parts. Leave out the gimmicks and clichés and go for clean lines and good quality materials. If your friend loves writing, then get them a plain leather bound notebook. They’ll appreciate the beauty of it and the thoughtfulness of a beautiful gift much more than they’d appreciate a notebook with a ‘witty’ slogan on the front of it. If you want to go personal, try a framed photograph of the two of you or perhaps some letter art.

Share Your Interests With Them

If your friend loves the arts, then chances are they’re a pretty interesting and enquiring person who’s open to new ideas and experiences. If they love going to art galleries then why not share your love of the ballet with them and take them to see a production of Swan Lake? If you can find beauty in one form of art, you can probably find it in others too, and they’ll be interested in learning something new.

Gifts For Your Mom: What To Buy This Holiday Season

Gifts For Your Mom: What To Buy This Holiday Season

Your mom is always a tough person to buy for at Christmas. It feels like she has everything already – and more to the point, you want to get her something nice to say thank you for all the hard work she does! Here are some tips to help you out.

Home Furnishings

If your mom is house proud, then why not buy her something new for her home? If you’re not sure what to get, you could take her for a day out shopping and pick something out together as well as treating her to lunch. You could buy her a feature pillow to put on her living room couch, a side table for the hallway, or even a practical yet pretty oriental umbrella stand. Make sure you soak up what her taste is like first – take a look around her house and take in her favorite colors and styles before making your choice of gift.

Pampering Gifts

Most of us can safely say that no one works harder than our moms. Not only did she go through eighteen years of raising you, but no one ever stops worrying about their kids. It would be a nice idea to give your mom a gift to help her relax. Consider giving her a voucher to a spa day so she can get a massage, or maybe even a makeover at a local beauty salon. You could also get her a basket of pampering goodies to use at home.

Clothes And Jewelry

If your mom is anything like most of the other moms out there, she thinks of everyone else before she thinks of herself, and as a result she sometimes doesn’t end up buying herself anything new. Consider treating her to a new item of clothing or jewelry. If you’re confident of her style and size, this should be easy! If not, take a look at what she has already to make sure that she’ll like whatever you get her. Make sure that it isn’t too old-looking – she wants you to think of her as someone who’s young and interesting, not someone who enjoys boring beige shirts! Try an embellished sweater or a blouse with a pretty pattern. If you’d like to go for jewelry, a pair of earrings always works – make sure you get gold or silver stems in case of allergies. Try to get her something a little different than usual, maybe from Etsy, so she can add a little sparkle to one of her usual outfits.

Experiences To Enjoy Together

In the end, Christmas is about spending time together and creating happy family memories, so it makes sense that you give your mom a gift that adds to that. Get her concert or theater tickets so you can spend an evening together, or take her out to your favourite restaurant together. With the pressures of your family life, it’s sometimes hard to remember to give time to anyone outside your partner and kids. But as you get older, your parents turn into figures you’re more friendly with, particularly after you have kids yourself. Appreciate and value your mom by spending time with her – get to know her as a person and not just a mother, and it’ll be a gift to you as well as her.
