2020 has been a difficult year for everyone around the world thanks to Coronavirus, and after such a terrible year, you might be looking forward to celebrating Christmas and putting this year to bed once and for all. Get everyone involved

Depending on where you live, there might still be restrictions in place that may hinder you from seeing everyone this Christmas, but that doesn’t mean anyone has to miss out! Form your Christmas gathering bubbles and set up a zoom call with other family members so that nobody has to miss out! That way, even if someone is unfortunate enough to be isolating on Christmas day, you’re still able to see each other and spend Christmas together as a unit. If you’ve got a smart TV and a HDMI cable, you could even project your zoom call to your TV to make it seem like they’re really there with you!

Check your car

The roads can be treacherous during the winter time, and if you’re travelling a significant distance to visit your family this Christmas, it’s a good idea to check your car beforehand. You could do this yourself by checking the amount of oil in the car, pumping up your tires, and even getting snow chains for your wheels if you expect to drive through snow. Alternatively, take your car to your local garage for a service and ask them for advice on staying safe on the roads during the winter time.

Buy personalised gifts

More than any other Christmas, this one needs to be special. This year has seen the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, some of whom you might know, not to mention millions of jobs and businesses being lost along the way. Make this Christmas the best one yet by purchasing personalised gifts for your loved ones. There’s something so heartwarming about receiving a personalised gift and let’s face it, you want to see your loved ones happy! There are plenty of personalised gifts you can buy online, but if you know somewhere local that personalizes items, support your local business! 

Create a Christmas playlist

In previous years the mere mention of Christmas songs usually turns people away from the idea of Christmas, especially when the radio stations begin playing them before people have gotten into the Christmas spirit. Well, Christmas is well and truly upon us, so create a playlist full of everyone’s favourites and have it on in the background while celebrating on Christmas Day! It’s surprising how much Christmas songs can really lift your spirits (especially if you’re a mulled wine or two down).

Start a new tradition

Every family has their own tradition at Christmas time, whether it’s eating breakfast together before opening gifts or watching a particular film after Christmas dinner as a family, they’re a great way of bringing a family closer than ever. Why not start a new one this year? The great thing about traditions is that it doesn’t necessarily have to make sense! Indulge in your favourite foods!

Looking after your waistline is great, but now’s the time to treat yourself! If there’s one thing that’s as good as being around those you love, it’s being surrounded by your favourite foods at the same time! So eat that minced pie, and treat yourself to another chocolate from the selection tin!

Take lots of pictures

While many of us live our lives precariously through social media and the images we see of other people’s lives, it’s still amazing looking back at old photos and remembering everything that was happening at that particular time. Even if you don’t share your photos on social media – be sure to take lots of pictures! In years to come you can look back and remember how you ended 2020 in style!

Play board games

It sounds so cliche, but there’s something so nostalgic about sitting with your family and playing a good old fashioned board game. You could try new games, twisting the rules slightly, or even making a rule that the loser must take a drink. If you are hosting a Zoom Christmas, encourage your family members on the other end to play, too! If you’re not a fan of board games, you could try other family games such as playing cards, or even using apps like House Party to play games with your loved ones.

Take a group walk

It’s almost a rite of passage to over eat on Christmas Day, and as a race we look forward to over indulging and serving up way more food than we can eat. However, every year you end up way too full and regret eating so much. Take your family for a walk around your town to help burn off some of the extra calories you’ve consumed. You could plan a route to admire people’s Christmas decorations, and pack insulated flasks with delicious hot chocolate to keep everyone warm. If you’re celebrating with children, you could create an “eye spy” game to keep them entertained along the way.

Have another glass of mulled wine

If you enjoy a glass of wine (or indeed, any other drink) every now and then, then why not treat yourself to another glass? After all, it’s Christmas right?!

2020 is on its way, and is actually almost here. This can make anyone excited and also apprehensive as to what the next ten years might hold.  It’s anyone’s guess. When we see how technology, culture and many other interesting elements of life have developed in ten years, anyone who can accurately predict what will happen in another ten will only be giving their best guess, despite what they say.

However, as always, worrying about the future is often left second to caring about the present. This means that becoming the new you before or as the new decade starts can help you segment yourself into productive new habits with this decade change as a milestone. It may seem overly optimistic, but there’s no reason as to why you should consider it so.

All you may need is an encouraging element of support and also someone gently whispering that yes, you can achieve this. With that said, please consider our advice to this end, as we hope to fulfil this role for you:

Stop Asking For Permission To Be You

We can often think that simply being ourselves is the greatest sin we can commit. Perhaps you like watching anime, or playing online games, or reading young adult fiction despite being 30 years old. Perhaps you enjoy baking in an apron as a 45-year-old buff security guard. Perhaps you enjoy learning full-contact MMA despite being a pleasant, middle-aged schoolteacher. Have we listed anything out of the ordinary here? Perhaps. Is that something to be ashamed of? Never. Stop asking for permission to be you. To use a cliched but always relevant phrase – the people who matter don’t mind, and the people who mind don’t matter.

Resolve Your Weights

Weights can hold all of us down. For some, it might be guilt for something experienced years ago. For others, it might be that they have been struggling with food addiction, or are falling back into terrible habits. It’s never as easy as clicking your fingers and being rid of the problem weighing you down, but the resolution process means taking a careful approach and doing your best to overcome the harmful issues you are facing. This means taking that first step, be it utilizing excellent substance abuse treatment, or even admitting that you need to speak to someone, allows you to find great inner strength and peace knowing you are making progress.

Don’t Force ‘You’

When we think of who we want to be, it’s easy to force ourselves into a singular version of who we think we are. But the truth is, you’re not that. You cannot force who you are. Moulding yourself into who you become is achieved through following what you are passionate about, through trying to live up to your highest ideals such as kindness or good faith. If you can approximate these measures, you feel much more alive than you have done prior. Because instead of living as an artificial version of you – you’re actually you.
