Fill Gas Tank Before the Freeze. Stupid Tip of the Day:

By Tia Cristy

Stupid Tip of the Day: Fill Gas Tank Before the Freeze.

You have may heard fill the gas tank before temperatures drop, but the reason behind it could be a little misunderstood. Gas doesn’t freeze the way you’d commonly think, it just moves slower and can harden and under really drastically low temperatures, it will crystallize. Now with that said, water does freeze at 32 degrees f.

Water can get into a gas tank and the water can freeze. If the tank is low, the car may not have enough time to warm up, to thaw the ice. And, ice won’t do that gas tank any good.

So yes, make sure you have a good amount of gas in the tank before the freeze, just to be sure, the car has plenty of gas to warm up.

Removing Adhesive, Doesn’t Have to be so Aggravating.

Removing Adhesive, Doesn’t Have to be so Aggravating.

Problem: Exhausted
and aggravated! We just moved into a new house and had a lot of fixing up. We
installed a new chandelier and it had stickers on the globes. I peeled them off
just to leave a nasty residue behind. Is there anyway to get that off without
having to take all the globes down and soaking them? Thanks! Amanda

Tip from Tia:

Well first
off congrats on the new home, I wish you many years of happiness. I understand
completely, the annoyance of finishing a project, and that little nuisance that
catches your eye, has the ability to ruin the whole job, in your mind. Don’t worry. There’s no
need to get riled on this problem, it’s an extremely easy fix.

A lot of times,
for a big project, the stuff you buy in stores for removing adhesive is great. But,
it usually leaves behind it’s own film, that needs to be washed off as well. And,
you’re right, hot water and soap in a long soak can do the job too, but some
things, like wood, shouldn’t be soaked for long periods of time, because they
can warp or even separate. For a small area or several small areas, I use
rubbing alcohol from the medicine cabinet. It breaks down the sticky residue.

Take a
few cotton balls and place something absorbent down under the chandelier, for any over
drip. Saturate the cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, then wipe over the “left
behind’ adhesive in a circular motion. The adhesive will start to ball up, wipe
away with a clean, dry cotton ball. If the dry cotton ball is still sticking, leaving fuzz behind, repeat this process until all adhesive is
gone. For tricky glue, you may have to scrape with your fingernail as you apply
the alcohol, so the alcohol can penetrate deep down to the actual surface. The
rubbing alcohol works getting adhesive off of many surfaces, while cleaning them
streak free!

Alcohol can remove adhesive off most surfaces, without harm.
If you want to try this on metal, use a test area, to make sure it doesn’t stain the metal or change the tone.
While doing your project, you may want to wear gloves if you have
cuts or scrapes on your hands, since the rubbing alcohol will give a little sting, if there is
an open wound.

Get the White Blood Cells Flowing. Tips on Triggers:

By Tia Cristy

Tips on Triggers: Get the White Blood Cells Flowing.

The job of the white blood cells, is to fight. They help fight off sickness and infections. When you feel “under the weather” there is 2 spots to know, on the body where the white blood cells kind of build up.

Rub on both sides of your knee caps were they’re indented. They tend to hang out in those pockets. The other spot is basically the same, at the elbow. Rub where you feel those little indents. By rubbing, this will release them in a surge, so they will speed off to fight any unwanted elements in your body.

This is the best way, I think, to shorten a cold.

Great Debate, Chicken Soup Does vs Doesn’t Cure the Flu. Stupid Tip of the Day:

By Tia Cristy

Stupid Tip of the Day:Great Debate, Chicken Soup Does v.s. Doesn’t Cure the Flu.

So you’ve heard it from both sides about chicken soup and the flu. Which side is true?

Chicken soup does have healing properties. There are a lot of nutrients in real chicken broth. The vegetables have vitamins. And, chicken itself has protein. The warmth of the soup can soothe a sore throat and warm your body’s core which can reduce a fever. These are all good strategies for you when battling sickness.

As for the “cure” part? The only cure it surely has is, curing hunger. But, it’s important to keep eating when you are sick, so your body doesn’t attack itself from starvation or dehydration, and only attacks the virus.

So I say, if you like chicken soup or you need to eat, grab a spoon and eat the chicken soup. It will give comfort and nutrition to help you keep your strength in fighting the flu.

Prevent Coating Atop of Pudding. Quickie:

Quickie: Prevent Coating Atop of Pudding.

Pudding can be a good, healthy desert or snack. It’s best to make it, instead of pre-made cups, but some folks aren’t a fan of the “skin” or coating that develops on top of the pudding.

Here’s a quick and simple way to prevent it from getting that coating. After you put the pudding in it’s cup or bowl to set, put a piece of wax paper on the top of the container. The wax paper will keep it from developing the film on top of the pudding.

Stuffy Nose, Clear it up. Tips on Triggers:

by Tia Cristy

(recap) Tips on Triggers:Stuffy Nose, Clear it up with this trigger point system.

Curl up your finger, use the flat part in between the knuckles and start at the top of the side of your nose where the eyebrow starts. Apply a fair amount of pressure and pause. Repeat pressure and pause along the whole side of your nose. (you may hear popping and crackling as you move downward)

Once at the nostril, slide finger with pressure across the cheek towards the ear. When you get to the ear, slide down the neck, still with slight pressure.

Use same process on the other side of the nose to clear that side. Repeat process when necessary.

Sinus infections can become a secondary problem after the flu. Mucus can be quite thick and cause blockage in the sinus, this trigger point system can help breakdown that blockage and prevent pain from a swollen tube filled with thick mucus. Call your doctor immediately, if you think you may have an infection or if symptoms don’t go away or get worse after several days.

Water on Frozen Windshield. Stupid Tip of the Day:

By Tia Cristy

Water on Frozen Windshield. Stupid Tip of the Day:

So, the ice is pretty thick on the windshield and you are in a rush. You may have hear water gets it off quickly, but was that warm water? Hot water? No! Getting ice off the windshield takes cold water.

Cold water will take off the ice, where warm or hot water could break or crack your windshield.

A good way to get the ice off quickly is, put the cool water in a spray bottle and spray the windshield in sections, while using a scraper to get off the clumps of ice. Depending how cold it is, wetting the whole windshield at once could freeze up quickly. So de-icing in sections, may sound time consuming, but can actually be a whole lot faster.

Adding rubbing alcohol to the water, will speed up the process faster, but use caution, rubbing alcohol is flammable and mark the spray bottle with it’s ingredients, so you don’t use it on other things, where the alcohol could not be helpful or may even be harmful.

Cold Wind can Trigger an Ear Infection. Tips on Triggers.

By Tia Cristy

(recap) Tips on Triggers: A cold wind can trigger an ear infection no matter what age you are.

Pelting weather going sideways hitting hard in the face and head; this is a reason for the invention of ear muffs and headbands that cover the ears. The wind can zip right into the ear applying pressure; then add in a sleet, rain or snow with it and now moisture has gotten into the canal. This is the worst.

It can create a very painful situation. So if it is a windy, cold, wet day, and you don’t have access to the ear coverings, here’s a tip. Get 2 cotton balls, add petroleum jelly or olive oil onto the cotton and place in each ear. Don’t shove in ear canal, place gently to just cover the canal. (be sure to assist your child if using this technique on them and remind them not to push it into the ear while it’s in there) The jelly or oil will keep the cotton ball from getting wet from the weather and the cotton will cover the opening so wind won’t pressurize your ear drums.

Preparing for Extreme Cold.

By Tia Cristy

Preparing for Extreme Cold.

The temperatures across the country are dipping down to record lows, in some areas. Extreme cold, causes some extreme precautions. Being prepared for the bitter cold, is like being prepared for a big storm, even if there is no rain, snow or wind in the forecast; it’s best to be ready for emergency action.

As like a storm, be prepared with foods. Have plenty of foods that don’t need refrigeration or cooking. Stock up on water. And, if you have kids, make sure you have what they need to eat.

Be prepared for any power outages. Have candles, first aid, fire extinguisher, batteries, battery radio, a fully charge phone for emergency, etc.

With it being extreme cold, there are some other things to have ready. Another heating source is necessary, like a fire place or space heater to use with a generator or knowing where the closest shelter is. In some cases, the power won’t go out but the heat source will. So make sure you have plenty of oil or propane if that is your heat source.

Have plenty of blankets and clean clothes to layer on if necessary. I of course, like those instant heat packs, that last up to 8 hours. They are good in an emergency heat loss situation.

Other things to have close by, are shovel, rock salt, extra fuel, games for the family, flash lights, lighters or matches (I recommend both, lighters can have a hard time lighting in the frigged cold).

Be safe and warm when experiencing extreme low temperatures. Check on neighbors and animals. If you need to go outside in sub-degree temps, expose yourself to the cold, for less than 10 minutes at a time, and recover, at least 10 minutes at a time.
