Anxiety Can Be Killer – But you Needn’t Let It Rule Your Life

Everyone experiences anxiety at some point in their lives. To do so is to be human. Situations are never 100% under our control, and as a result, it can feel hard to contend with them sometimes. Anxiety is a natural phenomenon to experience in many situations – such as getting that job you really want to interview well for, being on stage for your first school play, or asking that girl out you’ve had your eye on for some time.

These anxious feelings are to be expected, and it’s overcoming them in those instances that make the whole affair worthwhile. You simply wouldn’t have felt so good about yourself afterward, or performed as well as you did, if you didn’t have the anxiety to provide that initial resistance.

However, if your anxiety is getting out control, and you’re feeling an undue amount of it the moment you step outside of your comfort zone, you might need to look at the issue with more clarity. Fatigue, sweating, avoidance syndrome and generally feeling terrible when heading outside are all symptoms of a bigger issue. You might call it Anxiety with a capital A.

This can be overcome, but it’s incremental, and it takes time. Here are some tips if you find yourself in this circumstance now, or if you ever do in the future:

Learn Coping Methods

Learning methods to cope might seem difficult at first, but you can really combat anxiety with this. Stress balls, deep breathing and taking some quiet time once in awhile when out in a public setting can serve to help you recollect your thoughts, and focus on something other than your anxious feeling for a time.

Exercise and meditation are two of the greatest tools to help you. Exercise helps you feel comfortable and at home in your body, while meditation affords you the opportunity to step outside of your thought processes and even witness them happen. Meditation affects two main human problems – the ego and fear. Addressing them both allows you to become a much better person, arguably the person you were all along before the silly affliction started bothering you.

Attack What Scares You

Many clinical psychologists are starting to understand that the only way to overcome a phobia is to expose yourself to it. Becoming open and willing to put yourself in ‘harms way’ can be a horrible thing to imagine, but it’s likely the most rewarding attitude to help you there is. Someone who is terrified of elevators, for example, can benefit from moving closer and closer to them each day. An amazing idea comes to you when you are able to do this.

The closer you get, the more you instinctively realize that nothing back is happening to you as a result. This allows you to take further risks and find that they don’t injure you either. Expanding your realm of competence in this way helps you become a much more functional individual, and can help you overcome all sorts of neuroses, not only anxiety.

Remember, befriend your anxiety, and don’t expect it to leave too soon. But also tell it firmly that it’s surplus to requirements, and that you’re going to gently let it pass. Doing so will help you feel less fearful and more in control of the situation.
