From Run-Down To Ravishing: How To Make Your Renovation Project A Success

From Run-Down To Ravishing: How To Make Your Renovation Project A Success

There are some incredible old properties on the market but sadly, some of them have seen better days, but this doesn’t mean that they no longer serve a purpose. A growing number of adventurous investors and creative buyers are looking for a project. When you’re buying a house, it’s not always pristine showhomes that catch your eye. With a renovation project, there’s potential to create the home of your dreams. If you’re hoping to turn a run-down wreck into a ravishing retreat, here are some tips:

Plan carefully

Renovation work is often time-consuming, and it requires careful planning. Before you buy a house, you’ll need to know how much the build will cost, how much value you could add, and whether it’s viable to do what you want to do. It’s wise to consult with planning officers, architects, and building firms. It’s not enough to have a vision and a rough budget in mind. You need proper plans in place to make sure that you’re making the right decision. Investing in older properties can be incredibly lucrative, but it can also end up draining your resources. It’s essential that you select

Don’t shirk on expert help

It may seem relatively straightforward to come up with design ideas, especially if you’re blessed with creative talents. However, there’s an awful lot of work that goes into rebuilding and restoring a house. You’ll need to make sure that your plans satisfy building regulations, and seek planning permission for any structural changes you want to make, or extensions you wish to add. Calling in expert help may be costly, but it could save you significant sums in the long-run. If you get it wrong, you’ll end up paying experienced professionals to sort out a mess, which could have been prevented in the first place. You can help out with the odd job on-site, but you need people with the relevant expertise on board. Roofing jobs, for example, may look simple enough. But there’s a lot of skill that goes into fixing loose tiles, fitting a polycarbonate sheet or tending to leaks. Other jobs you might want to call the professionals out for include clearing a blocked drain, other plumbing work and electrical jobs.

Some people sail through the process of restoring an old house without any major hiccups, but it’s always a good idea to make contingency plans. You may encounter problems that have implications for the timeframe and budget. If you’ve set aside some money, and you have somewhere to stay while work is underway, this will save you stress and hassle if you do hit

Be original

If you’re renovating a house, seize the opportunity to inject your style and personality, and be original. It can be tough to see past the decor and style in a brand new home. But with a project, you have free reign to celebrate your taste and design your ideal home. Look online and flick through some magazines for inspiration and ideas.

If you’ve bought an old home in need of some TLC, there’s probably a lot of work to do. This is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. Plan ahead, work with experts, and always have contingency plans in place, just in case. Once you’ve got the major jobs sorted, start thinking about the interior, and be original with your ideas. This is your chance to create the home of your dreams!

Coping with an A/C Breakdown this Summer

Coping with an A/C Breakdown this Summer

Unsplash

Imagine it, a swelteringly hot summers day, you’ve been out in the sun all day, drinking with your friends, playing in the garden with kids, doing some planting or just relaxing on your own with a favorite book and a comfy chair. It’s been great. You’ve had a fantastic summers day. But then you want to cool off. You walk into your house only to find that the A/C is out. It’s broken down and needs to be repaired. You’re suddenly faced with the prospect of an evening in a boiling house. You can’t cool off, you can’t sleep, and life has just become much more uncomfortable. What do you do?

Well, first, remember that it’s not the end of the world. There are places all over the world where air conditioning isn’t standard. Where their homes are hot all summer long, and they have to find other ways to keep cool.

Get it Fixed

If you want a comfortable and healthy summer, you need your air conditioning. So, if you can, getting your unit fixed as soon as possible should be a priority. Find a dependable air conditioner repair company that can get out to you quickly. Even if you have a little wait, at least you’ll know the matter is in hand.

Invest in a Fan

In the meantime, fans are your friends. You don’t need big industrial machines for your home, small desk fans, and upright fans for bigger areas can do the job well. Some people struggle to sleep with a fan in the room, but it can still be worth it to have on for a few hours before bed.

Freeze Your Bedding

It might sound a little dramatic, but freezing your sheets and bed clothes can be a fantastic way to cool your bed down for long enough for you to get to sleep. Sure, it will warm up again during the night, but hopefully, the air temperature will have cooled down by then.

Fold your pillowcase, sheet and PJ’s up and seal them in an airtight freezer bag. Place them in your freezer for as long as you can (even a few minutes will help) before you need them. Your bed will be cool for long enough for you to drift off to sleep.

Chill Out

In very hot weather, and conversely, terrible snowy weather, we find ourselves saying things like “it would be fun if I didn’t have to go about my day to day life” Snow is lovely to look at and play in until you’ve got to get to work and do the shopping. The sun is the same. It’s lovely when you are chilling in the garden, but horrible when you have chores to do and a life to lead.

While your A/C is down, do as little as you can get away with at home. Leave the chores until it’s back online. Spend time resting and relaxing, and it will be much easier to keep your body temperature down.

Stick to Water

There’s not much more relaxing than sitting by the pool sipping a cocktail. But, in a stuffy and hot house, alcohol won’t help. You’ll have hot flushes, you’ll sweat, and it will be very hard to get comfy. Stick to iced water instead.

Beat Summertime Blues

Beat Summertime Blues

The summer is usually a time to shed the winter funk. The sun shines brighter. The weather is warmer. Birds are always singing a song. But for some, those feelings of depression are hard to shake, no matter how beautiful the day is.

Here’s some ideas on how to quash those summertime blues.

It’s okay to take a break

Summer is the most widely acceptable time to take a vacation. Vacations can be expensive, stressful and above all give you the need to have a vacation after your vacation. Plan accordingly. Give yourself a day of rest after you get back.

If you don’t have the funds to go away, plan a few days of a staycation. Sure, use a few days to get things done on your to-do list, but remember to have time to rest as well as have fun.

Keep a journal

Keeping a journal is a great way to release the everyday stress and low thoughts going on. Write down what’s bothering you. But here’s a twist, finish your thoughts with positive goals. List options of how to fix the situation or write out positive quotes to balance your mindset.

Plan for the future

We all have dreams and goals. Planning for the future allows you to look past the hopelessness of a bad moment. Write out a five-year plan. After that, write down a one-year plan. This will help give you realistic steps on how to accomplish your dream-worthy goals. This might take a couple hours, days or weeks, but write down things that you look forward to achieving.

You’re not alone

Summer can bring on emotions of feeling alone. Friends are on vacation. Perhaps, you and your partner have parted ways for the summer. Use this time to focus on yourself. Get healthy. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

Take an exercise class. Start walking. Being active releases positive brain chemicals to fight off depression.

Next, find someone to talk to. There’s plenty of great ways to approach this. Ask your doctor to refer a therapist. Or, talk to a therapist or counselor online with BetterHelp. Sometimes, we as humans get lonely. But know this, you are not alone.  There are many outlets to remind us of that if we just take a second to look beyond ourselves.

Find your joy

You can make this task easy or difficult. Think back to when you were a child. Simple things made you happy. Yes, some we’re material things. However, there were plenty of things that put a smile on your face without costing a thing. I’m not saying live in the past. Move forward with child-like eyes. Enjoy the simple things in life. Enjoy that sunset. Enjoy taking off your shoes and walking in the grass. Enjoy sitting by the city fountain on a hot day and feeling the cool spray of the water.

Your best days are ahead of you. Just remember to rest, get healthy, find your peace and learn what makes you happy.

Undeniable Reasons Being A Woman Is Awesome!

Undeniable Reasons Being A Woman Is Awesome!

Image

The role of women has never been more under the microscope. What with the Me Too movement and the gender pay gap, there are lots of reasons to think men are on top. However, being a woman is incredible. The alternative is to be a man, and we can all agree it isn’t on our bucket list, ladies! And, if you think this is a post to big up women without any evidence, you’re wrong. Womanhood is supported by science, and the proof of the pudding is in the eating. So, carry on reading to find out more and eat up these undeniable reasons being a woman is awesome.

We Don’t Need A Man

That’s according to a recent study in The Guardian. Something ladies have known for ages is that there is no need for a man in life. Sure, finding a partner to spend forever with is an incredible experience, but it doesn’t define women. Men need it because it calms them down and adds another string to their bow; we, on the other hand, are more likely to die early. And, it isn’t only men because the girls don’t need kids either as unmarried women without children is the happiest group. The next time someone questions your independence hit them with this nugget.

We’re Better Drivers

The adage is that men are better drivers, but that’s been disproved. A recent study published in Harper’s Bazaar shows women are better than men because they’re less likely to be involved in an accident. While the guys need the experts at Eric Ramos Law on speed dial, we don’t have to worry about our health on the road. There are knock-effects, too. Being safer drivers means insurance premiums for women are lower and we have more money in our back pockets.

We Communicate Better

A study by the University of Manchester found that women are better communicators than men. Why? It’s because they speak for the sake of it and we get to the point. Let’s face it – this research is about as reliable as it gets! Not only is the stereotype that women are gossipers not true; we’re more succinct too. The reason this is important is varied, from being more efficient and not wasting time to expressing how we feel. The latter might seem corny but it’s an integral part of a successful relationship, not that we need one anyway!

We Live Longer

If you thought being a woman didn’t get any better, wait until you hear this one: our life expectancy is higher. The reasons haven’t been pinned down yet, but it’s thought women live longer for biological child-bearing purposes. Regardless, we get all of the benefits above and we get to enjoy them for longer. Sure, there are some drawbacks to womanhood, but we’re working on that too with more representation in the workplace and the boardroom. Oh, and sexual harassment and is on the decline as well.

Sorry guys, but it looks as if you’re the ones who’ve picked the short straw. Ouch!

Making Important Life Decisions That You Feel Happy About

Making Important Life Decisions That You Feel Happy About

Life is all about balance. There will be times where things just seems to be going your way, and then there will be moments where you have no choice but to make difficult decisions. Ultimately, you have to think about yourself and your family before anything else, and in some circumstances, people may not agree with your decision, but as long as you feel content and assured, then that’s all that matters. With that in mind, here are some of the important life decisions that you may need to consider and make in the near or distant future.

Deciding to get married

Finding someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with is not as easy as you might think. Some meet their partners in school and are childhood sweethearts, others will wait and kiss many frogs before finding their prince. However, many get to the stage where they are serious with someone and then ultimately the conversation regarding marriage will come up. Deciding on making that commitment is big, but in your heart of hearts you will already know what you want to do.

Deciding to start a family

Whether marriage is on the cards or not, starting a family may be something that you start discussing. That might be because every conception story is different, and sometimes trying to conceive can take longer than you originally thought. Take time to consider your options and don’t be put off if it doesn’t happen straight away. It might be worth looking into things that you can do to improve your chances.

What if you are not ready?

Sometimes we are not ready for children when the situation arises accidentally. It might have been a time when your contraception failed you or simply just an error in judgement. It happens, and that might mean that you consider all of your options including an abortion clinic. However, these things can come at unexpected times and in theory after consideration it might not be a bad thing. Just make sure you take time before making any rash and life-changing decisions.

Knowing what to do with your career

Your career and the job that you do is an important decision to make when it comes to life. After all, you spend a huge chunk of your time working, and you want to ensure that you feel happy and content. Sometimes we don’t realise what we are passionate about until later in life, so a career change may be on the cards for you. It could even mean starting your own business and working for yourself. Working from home for a better life and work balance and generally making some big decisions for your future career.

Where you live and what you do with your life

Finally, where you live and what you do with your life are also big decisions that you may want to take time considering. Perhaps you want to live in a different country and experience a new culture. Maybe you want to do charity work or change your lifestyle in some way. Take time to think about what you want to do with your life, we only get one shot at it.

Let’s hope this has given you something to think about when it comes to important life decisions.

The Girl’s Guide To Car Maintenance

The Girl’s Guide To Car Maintenance

There’s nothing more infuriating as a woman than standing in the garage while a mechanic tries to overcharge you for repairs to your car, because he assumes you don’t know anything about it. Instead of having to phone your brother, or accept your husband’s mocking, every time your engine is making a strange noise, learn some basic car maintenance tips, so you can be in charge of your own car.

Image

Learn The Basics

There are some basic maintenance tasks that all cars need on a regular basis. Learning how to do them yourself will save you money instead of paying a professional, or will save you the embarrassment of having to ask for help.

Learn how to top up your washer fluid. This is a really simple task once you’ve identified where the fluid goes, and will take less than a minute to do. Learn how to check your tire pressure. In most cars, you’ll find a sticker on the driver’s side door which tiles you what your tire pressure should be. Unscrew the air cap on the tire and press the gauge into the slot. Easy.

Another simple task is checking your oil level. All you do is slide the dipstick out of the engine. Wipe it clean, and pop it back. Lift it back out and see where the oil level is. There should be some guidelines on the stick to show you where to look. If it’s low, just top up the oil tank.

Learn How To Change A Flat Tire

Don’t end up stranded at the side of the road with a flat tire and no idea how to change it. If you don’t have a spare tire, get one, and store it safely in the car. Ask someone to teach you how to change it, or find a guide on YouTube. You might find yourself very grateful of the skill one day!

Learn To Jump Start

Accidentally left a light on in the car overnight and now can’t get the engine to start. First, check the battery is actually the problem. To do this, check to see if the headlights or any interior lights come on. If they don’t, the battery is probably dead.

To jump start a car, you’ll need a second car with a working battery. Check the location of the battery in each car, and then park the cars close together. Turn off everything in both cars. With your jumper cables, attach the red clips to the positive terminal of the battery (it’ll have POS or a plus sign on it). Attach one black clip to the negative terminal of the working battery. Attach the other black slip to an unpainted metal surface on the car. The strut that holds up the hood is ideal. Start the working car and let the engine run for a few minutes. Try your engine. If it doesn’t work, check the connections and let the other engine run for five minutes before trying again.

Buy The Right Gas

Filling your with good quality gas will prolong its life. Choose gas from a trusted company whenever you fill up.

Try to avoid letting the tank get less than a quarter full. The gas tank can get sediment inside it, and letting the car run too empty runs the risk of that sediment getting into the fuel filter.

Keep Things Clean

Caring for your car will help it last longer. Make sure you clean the car inside and out, even in winter, to get rid of dirt buildup. If you have a leather interior, care for it with proper leather conditioner to keep it supple and in good condition.

Keep an old blanket or towels in the car to protect your interior if you ever need to move anything dirty, whether that’s picking up second hand furniture or driving home with the dog after a muddy walk.

Know When It’s Time To Call A Professional

While it’s important to know how to take the best care of your car, it’s also important to know when you’re beaten. If you’re not sure how to do something, always take your car to a mechanic instead of trying to fix the problem yourself. This is much safer for you and your car. For things like transmission repair, engine repairs or anything else you’re not sure about, call in the professionals.

Knowing how to look after your own car is very rewarding and will help you keep your car in top condition, without having to rely on others.

U OK Hun? Self Care For Internet Entrepreneurs

U OK Hun? Self Care For Internet Entrepreneurs

Image via Pexels

You may be great at running your business, but are you any good at taking care of yourself? More than any other group of people, entrepreneurs are notorious for pushing themselves to the limit, burning the candle at both ends and not listening to what their bodies are telling them. When you don’t have a line manager, and everything you’re working on is to set up your future then working long hours and barely leaving your desk can begin to feel somehow normal. You’re under a huge amount of self-generated pressure to succeed, learning new things, trying to bring everything together and make it work and desperately aiming to become profitable while keeping calm. The important thing to realise is that for an entrepreneur, health IS wealth. You are the engine of your success. Your creativity, vision, ideas and hard work are what makes your business. If you neglect your health and become seriously ill, then your business will be damaged in the process. So making time for self-care isn’t just a smart investment – it’s a necessary fundamental of running a successful business. If you want to build a long-term career and company, then you need to prioritise your own mental and physical health, even during the busy times.

Make Me Time A Part Of Your Schedule

For every business fundamental, you have an allocated slot in your schedule. Time to create a marketing strategy. Time to brush up a client pitch. Time to go through the accounts and prepare a business tax return. The same has to be true of your health – you need to create an allocated time and stick to it. The key is to be clear on what relaxes you – for some it could be fitting in a 5k or a game of squash, others will find it in reading a few chapters of a great book or even playing video games. Some may benefit from using a daily mindfulness app. Find whatever works for you and make it a religion to honour that small slice of time for yourself.

Sort Out Any Minor Issues

Just as you would try to identify any business issues quickly and sort them out before they escalate and cause damage, so you must take the same approach to your health. Instead of ignoring that sore back or the onset of insomnia, it’s a good idea to get them checked out by your primary care doctor. Perhaps it is just nothing, but if it isn’t, treatment will be a lot quicker and more effective if you tackle the problem head on and early.

Fit In Some Exercise

It can definitely feel like the last thing you have the time for is exercise, but keeping active is a form of health insurance for entrepreneurs. The right sport makes you mentally and physically stronger – allowing you to be more productive and focused at work. It also helps to keep you healthy, lowering your risk of multiple diseases and keeping your immune system primed – and when you don’t get paid to take a sick day, that’s a pretty big deal!

Declutter Your Home

So this is something that pretty much all of us are good at putting off, for a very long time. When you have your own family, or when you’ve owned your own home for a good couple of years, the amount of clutter can really build up. Not only that, the renovation work that you might want to do, might only add to the clutter.. So if you feel like it’s getting to the point where this needs to happen, you’re first going to have to think about bin hire. It’s going to save you so much time getting a bin hired for your home, and you’ll soon be able to get things done. So have a real good clear out, and look at anything you don’t like or don’t use anymore. You might be able to donate some of it! Once you dedicate a few hours to this, you’ll be surprised at how much space frees up.

Keep Your Days On Track

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep your days on track, especially if you’re always filling it with one thing after the other. Sometimes it’s hard to stick to it when you don’t write it down, so as silly as it might sound, a daily to-do list can help you to keep your days on track. If you do everything in order and quickly, you might find you free up more of your evenings and weekends!

Calm Your Thoughts

So we spoke about mental health in the beginning, and we know how prominent it is at the minute. So one thing we’d recommend is yoga. It’s a great way to process the thoughts in your mind, and help you to empty your head. The more stressful thoughts you’re having, the more negative you’re going to feel. But taking that time to truly relax through yoga can really help that. There are simple guides that will get you going online.

4 Easy Ways To Save Money In The Garden

4 Easy Ways To Save Money In The Garden

We’re all looking for ways to save money and stick to our budget and usually, we start with the home. If you can find ways to reduce your energy bills in the home and spend less on maintenance, you’ll save yourself a lot of money. But have you ever thought about how much money you’re spending on the garden? Most people don’t but when you add it up, you’ll be surprised just how much it’s costing you to maintain your outside space. Luckily, you can do these simple things to save money around the garden.

Image From Maxpixel

Reduce Water Usage

Watering the garden is one of the biggest expenses, especially if you’ve got a lot of plants out there. It’s always a good idea to reduce your water usage for environmental reasons anyway, but it will also save you a lot of money out in the garden as well. The best thing to do is to plan your watering properly and only water when you actually need to. That means you should plan around the weather and let the rain do the hard work for you where possible. You should also look into drip irrigation systems that deliver water directly to the root and use way less water than a hose or sprinkler system.

As well as finding ways to cut the water that you use, you should start collecting rainwater as well because it won’t cost you anything. Get some water tanks out in the garden and you’ll see that they soon fill up in the winter. You should have more than enough water to look after all of your plants and it’s completely free.

Make Your Own Compost

Plants need good quality compost if they’re going to get the nutrients that they need to thrive, but it’s costing you money if you’re buying it every year. The thing is, there’s really no need because it’s not that hard to make your own compost out in the garden. You’ll just need to use food scraps from the kitchen so all you need to pay for is the compost bin and that’s it.

Propagate Plants

A lot of people don’t know about propagating plants which is a shame because it’s a great way to save money on buying new plants every year. When you propagate a plant, you split it and then replant it so that they multiply. That means you can buy a few plants and eventually fill the whole garden. If you learn how to propagate plants, you’ll save so much money on buying them in the future.

Use Citrus Peel For Pests

Getting rid of pests is important, otherwise, they’ll eat all of your plants. But you don’t need to be spending money on pesticides and slug repellent because there is a cheap natural alternative. Citrus peels contain chemicals that repel or kill pests so they can be used instead of your normal pesticide. That means you’re not putting potentially harmful chemicals out in the garden either.

You’d be surprised how much money you could save out in the garden by making these simple changes.
