by Guest Blogger, Dana B.

Ever feel like you’re 35 going on 65? Feeling older than you actually are is usually a strong indicator that you need to change your lifestyle habits. Aside from the emotional impacts, feeling older can mean that your physical health is being affected by your everyday habits. Still, it can be tricky knowing which advice to follow when it comes to healthy aging, The best lifestyle changes to make are ones that are backed by research, like the ones below.

Eat More Gut Healthy Foods

Listening to your gut is crucial for important decisions, but it can also be important for healthy aging. According to Gaiam, there are several links between gut health and overall health, including inflammation and lowered immunity, but these changes can be easily reversed to promote healthier aging. While supplements and treating infections are helpful, you can also turn to gut healthy foods to restore the balance in your own internal microbiome. Most people already know that yogurt contains healthy bacteria, but it’s possible to boost gut health with garlic, almond milk, pickles and even dark chocolate. These vitamin-, probiotic- and prebiotic-rich foods either contain the same gut-healthy bacteria or helpful fiber, both of which can help maintain balance in your digestive system.

Find Ways to Maintain Hydration

You’ve heard it over and over again: Hydration is important. Although you may recognize this importance, you may not fully understand the benefits of hydration for your mind and body, especially when it comes to feeling older. For example, hydration can provide an energy boost, improve the appearance of skin, and even promote weight loss. So, you will look and feel younger, no matter your real age. Drinking all that water can be a challenge for many folks, though, which is why it’s useful to have some hydration tricks to make yourself drink more often. Pack a large water bottle in your bag before you head off to work, or add some fruit to your water, to make staying hydrated less daunting and something you start to look forward to each day.

Always Wear Sunscreen When Outside

When people who look and feel younger talk about their habits, they also tend to emphasize the importance of sunscreen use. That means wearing SPF any time you’re going to be out in the sun. Damaging UV rays—which can cause changes to skin appearance and skin cancer—are present whether you can see them or not, and seeing skin damage in the mirror can definitely make you feel older. The next time you’re going to be outside in the daytime, dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen that contains SPF 15 or 30; anything higher might actually provide false skin protection against the sun’s rays.

Stop Following Every Fad Diet

Maintaining a healthy weight can help you look and feel better. If you’re turning to fad diets to achieve that trim body, however, you may actually be risking your health. For instance, one fad diet claims that you can eat bentonite clay (volcanic ash) to help you lose weight, but according to Dr. Anton Emmanuel, gastroenterologist, you’re putting your digestive system, kidneys and heart at risk of failing. So if you want to change your diet, just focus on eating whole, nutritious meals that you can easily prepare at home or obtain from a delivery service if it’s in your budget.

If you Google “healthy aging,” you’re bound to be bombarded by a lot of wellness fads and complicated information. Really, though, looking and feeling younger just takes some simple changes to your basic everyday habits. So drink more water, wear sunscreen, and eat foods that will nourish your gut, your body and your overall health. Because those little, research-backed habits really can help you age better and feel younger.

4 Ways to Help to Elderly Parents without Draining Yourself and Your Budget

4 Ways to Help to Elderly Parents without Draining Yourself and Your Budget

Your parents took care of you when you were a kid. They paid for your education and food. They raised you to be a good person. And while they didn’t do that expecting you to return the favor, there might come a day when they’ll need you to step in.

Of course, if that day comes, it will mean that you have to make some changes in your lifestyle, regarding your career, personal life, and finances. No one expects you to give up on your life to care for your parents. But you will need to learn to balance your responsibilities in a way that enables you to continue making an income, caring for your family, and giving your parents all the attention they need.

Because you should not be in this alone, here are a few tips that will help you get through this situation.

See if They Need Help and How Much Help They Need

It’s always hard to admit that our parents, who we considered to be our superheroes, are ill and powerless. Facing the facts early on will help you give them the best care they need. The best thing you can do is to talk to your parents first because they need to be involved in every decision that concerns them.

Then, search for the signs they need help:

  • They’re struggling with household chores.
  • Their personal hygiene is not as it used to be.
  • They’re not eating regularly.
  • They struggle to move around the house and neighborhood.
  • They’re losing hand-eye coordination, which prevents them from driving safely, using tools, and other necessities.
  • They’re losing track of their medication.

Once you determine the condition of your parents, you will know the degree of care they require. For example, they might only need you to help with paying the bills or doing household chores. In more severe cases, they will require assistance with getting dressed and moving around.

Talk to Your Employer

Trying to juggle work and the new responsibilities might be the first to come to mind when you find yourself in a situation like this. However, in most cases, this feat results in dropping one juggling ball. Your productivity will definitely suffer, and your boss will notice it. It’s better for you to tell him/her before this happens.

Be honest. Try to point out your value to the company and explain that you will still do your best to contribute. You can ask to work from home for some time or take family days. Your company might even offer some benefits you can use.

Examine the Financial Situation and Make Plans

The financial aspect of being a caregiver is not to be neglected, as it can take quite a toll on both your and your parents’ budget.

First, you need to asses your current financial situation and see if there is room for savings. As a family caregiver, you might have a chance for a tax deduction, so check that out as well.

Later, you should do the same with your parents’ retirement income, but this is a touch topic. You’ll need to assure your parents that you have their best interest at heart. If they haven’t applied for social security yet, help them do it, and look for any tax and other reliefs that can help. For example, being a member of The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) provides various services, such as insurance coverage and discounts for certain medical equipment.

Consider downsizing their living arrangements as a way of cutting unnecessary expenses and adding to their savings. Of course, it is imperative to plan for the long term and create a budget that will cover the costs of future care.

Don’t Do Everything on Your Own

Taking on all the responsibilities alone can only cause you to burn out faster and damage your own health, which will result in a decreased ability to take care of your parents.

There’s no shame in asking a sibling or a relative for help when it comes to taking your parents to the doctor’s or cleaning the house. If your kids are teenagers or older, they can also help around the house or just be good company to their grandparents. Ask the neighbors to check up on your parents every once in a while and let you know about their condition. This way, the burden will feel lighter, and you’ll be able to balance your life more successfully.

Finally, don’t neglect your health and personal needs. You are of no use to your parents if you’re miserable or sick. Try to find the time to rest, sleep, and socialize, and when you come to their house with a smile on your face, they will feel much better too.

6 Ways to Get More (and Better) Sleep

6 Ways to Get More (and Better) Sleep

By Guest Blogger, Elise Morgan

  • Exercise Daily

Exercising regularly is one of the best ways to improve your sleep and is even backed by science – adults that exercised took half the time to fall asleep and slept 41 more minutes per night than those that did not exercise.

Physical activity not only contributes to more restful sleep, but also increases time spent in deep sleep. This helps to boost your immune system, while also supporting cardiac health, controlling stress, and minimizing your anxiety.

  • Stick to a sleep schedule

Do your best to follow a nightly plan where you will be in bed for 7-9 hours every night, and if possible, go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. By limiting the differences in your sleep schedule, your body’s sleep-wake cycle will be reinforced, letting your body know more effectively when to wake up in the morning and when to start winding down at the end of the day.

  • Optimize your room for comfortability

Your sleep environment is key to getting more rest and is crucial in how you feel when you wake up. If you’ve been getting up in the morning with an achy body and a groggy mind, be sure you are sleeping on comfortable mattresses and pillows that are right for your body and sleep preferences. If your mattress is no longer feeling supportive and comfortable, it may be because it has exceeded its life expectancy – about 7-10 years depending on the quality.

  • Find your wind down routine

Another great way to get more sleep is to create a pre-bedtime routine that helps you wind-down. Relaxation techniques before hopping into bed have been proven to improve the quality of your sleep and is even oftentimes used to treat insomnia.

Consider listening to relaxing music (think: ocean sounds, rain noises, light classical music, etc.), reading a book, meditating, and even deep breathing techniques to find the best method to help put you to sleep.

.     Make Sleep a Priority

It’s important to understand that your body needs sleep, and that you should not be prioritizing your daytime activities when it’s time for bed. We have all been guilty of letting television, the internet, our phones, and even our relationships infringe upon our sleep, but we need to respect the amount of rest that our bodies demands and adhere to these requirements.

  • Paint your room a “cool” color for tranquility

When all else fails, consider some redesigning to optimize your sleep. To make your room more serene and calming, consider painting the walls blue – studies show that those who slept in a blue room got a better night’s sleep, and slept more on average.

How to Deal With Engagement Call Off in The Least Torturous Way Possible

How to Deal With Engagement Call Off in The Least Torturous Way Possible

By Caitlin E.

Woman is taking off the wedding ring

Breaking up is always difficult, regardless of the circumstances, but calling off an engagement is a whole new level of heart crushing. To enter such a “deal” with someone, in the first place, it takes being committed to someone to the point of wanting to grow old together. What makes it even more heart wrenching is that this relationship usually includes friends, family, finances, and logging.

Calling off an engagement that could lead to a bad marriage is kinder than building a bad marriage. It is possible, but how to go through such a turmoil in the least torturous way possible?

Saying the words

‘We need to talk’ is probably the most horrifying sentence to say and to hear, but sometimes it has to be said. Beating around the bush is the worst thing you can do. Instead, face the problem head-on. Say what it is that you want and why you want it. Include your fiancé[e] in the conversation. Talk with respect and kindness. Again, if you are not the one saying the words, have understanding for your partner’s reasons and try to bear it calmly.

Dealing with the emotional aftermath

The breakup is a serious trauma and all persons involved need to have time to grieve and heal. It is best to give each other space and resist the temptation to enter the endless “why” discussions and to be a part of each other’s lives, no matter the cost. This doesn’t mean that, later on, you won’t be able to have normal conversations or even be friends, but, for now, you need time to mend your wounds.

Solving the financial and living situation

Source: unsplash.com

If you and your former partner have lived together and shared expenses, you probably have more ties beyond the emotional ones. If you are still living together, until one of you finds a new place, make agreements about respectful cohabitation, and search for a new place as soon as possible. Paying the rent and bills should be divided equally, even if you are not talking to each other, this is something you need to resolve.

Whose is the engagement ring?

Engagement rings are usually considered gifts contingent on a wedding ceremony taking place. This means that the bride should return the ring. Still, if the ring was offered as a gift for a special occasion (e.g., birthday), it is hers to keep.

Source: unsplash.com

State laws vary when it comes to the question who gets the ring. Some states consider the ring a gift, while others have special terms in regards who breaks the engagement.

If there is a disagreement over the ring you can seek legal counsel, but it is always better to talk things through.

Announcing the breakup

People you work with, your family, and friends will want to know the engagement is called off. Since you don’t want to be the topic of gossip and conversation, it is best to tell them yourself. There is no easy way to do this, but it is the least painful for you and your former fiancé[e] divide the list of guests. To avoid going through this too many times, make announcements to groups of friends and family. Do not play the “blame game”, say it is over in the most respectful way and that it is not open for discussion.

Making formal cancelations

The clergy member or wedding officiate needs to know the wedding is canceled so he or she can take the date off the busy schedule. Keep in mind that some clergy members can recommend at least one counseling session. You will also need to contact all the vendors you have hired to provide services during the ceremony or the reception. You probably won’t get your deposit back and, in some cases, you will be liable for part of the payment.

Source: unsplash.com

Regardless of the reason of calling off the engagement, both of you should always keep in mind, and constantly repeat to yourselves if necessary, that the person you are leaving behind is the same person you once loved so much that you wanted to make an unbreakable vow to love and to hold for the rest of your lives.

What Better Not to DIY In Your Home

By Guest Blogger, Patrick A.

What Better Not to DIY In Your Home

Somehow we started believing that DIY stands for Do Everything Yourself. This usually happens when the weather outside is colder and we are more focused on the interior. After all, summer is for having fun and taking a vacation from any kind of work.

But before you start DIY issues in your home, make sure you really know what you’re doing. It’s better to have bruised ego, then destroy your home or get injured, after all. However, to make it all easier for you, here is the list of things better left to the professionals.

Don’t Mess with Electricity

Electricity is no joke and it can cause serious injuries and even death if you don’t know what you are doing. Furthermore, you can endanger the lives of your loved ones and other people who are near you when you meddle with electricity. Just because you flipped a fuse switch doesn’t mean you can fix the whole electrical grid in your home.

DIY Roof Repairs Can Cause More Damage

There are various roof problems, but most commonly you will have to deal with leaks. They are caused by broken tiles, bad insulation, rodents, and cracks, to name a few. And while some repairs may sound easy, they can be dangerous like slipping and falling off the roof.

Besides this being a risky job, you can do the repairs wrong and create more problems in the end. Cleaning gutters regularly and checking the roof for damages can prevent further damage. But waterproofing is a complex job that requires expertise and equipment, so hire professionals for that.

Stay Away from Asbestos

Asbestos is renovation doomsday. Once it is airborne you can inhale it in your lungs and get sick from it. Professionals who deal with asbestos wear protective masks and suits and also use special measures to get rid of it.

Since this is a serious issue which can significantly impair the health of everyone in the house, you should definitely leave it to the experts. If you discover it in your home, call help immediately and leave the room.

Leave Home Appliances to Professionals

Every home appliance repair is different and there are so many things that may be wrong with a device. First of all, parts may need replacing, wiring might not be right and electronics needs assessment via special equipment. And that is not a job for someone with limited resources and knowledge.

In the end, you may cause more damage to your appliance or electrical grid during a short circuit. And in worst case scenario, you could injure yourself. So, do something fun instead and leave appliance repair to professionals.

Plumbing Is Not Fun, but Serious Business

There is not “only a small leak”, but every drop should be taken seriously immediately. While leaking faucet or shower may not be cause for immediate attention, other things are. That includes leaking pipes which if not taken care of properly can cause structural damage to the house.

If you want to try your plumbing skills, stick simple things like fixing a drain. Imagine not doing something right and overflowing a toilet or causing a flood with an unstoppable burst in a pipe. It all sounds like more work after the repair than before, so if unsure, better call a plumber to deal with the issues.

Lastly

No matter how tempted you are to show off your repair skills, some things are better left to professionals. It’s hard to resist numerous video tutorials available online, but in the end, DIY is not always a great solution. After all, it’s better to pay an expert then remedy the damage created by your amateur repairs.

Online Dating and Sexual Health: What You Need to Know

By Guest Blogger, Caitlin E.

Online Dating and Sexual Health: What You Need to Know

Source: unsplash.com

Millions of people use online dating websites and apps to meet new people and engage in different levels of intimacy – from just chatting to casual sex to romantic relationships. With the rising popularity of various platforms such as Match.com, EHarmony, Tinder, and numerous others, the stigma that once existed around online dating has been greatly diminished. Even statistics show that the majority of Americans claim online dating is a good way to meet people.

But it’s still a relatively new landscape, where it’s crucial that we’re all well-informed and understanding of how we can navigate it responsibly. Here’s what you need to keep in mind regarding sexual health when meeting new people on dating platforms.

Sexual health is about psychological well-being too

The concept of sexual health is often mistaken for only the physical aspect of health in regards to sexuality, such as the absence of an STI.

But the World Health Organization reminds us that sexual health goes much further than that, implying psychological wellbeing, freedom of choice, and the ability to have a satisfying and responsible sex life.

In the online dating culture, you have all the freedom you need to engage with whomever you want and however you want. And when you have this kind of freedom, it’s especially important to listen to your gut instinct and to be cautious when meeting new people online.

It’s easy to get caught up in all of it, which makes it even more important that you fully acknowledge what you want and what you don’t want – regardless of how the person you’ve met will react. Listen to your innate needs, take care of yourself, and don’t let yourself feel pressured at any point.

Online dating is there to make things easier and more enjoyable for you, not to become a burden on your well-being.

Always use protection. Always.

Source: unsplash.com

A lot of people are hooking up through dating platforms, as the medium makes meeting new people much faster and more convenient. The math is quite simple – the more casual sex there is, the more STIs are likely to be circulating.

This is nothing new, as STIs are more widespread than you might expect. There’s just too much stigma around them so you can be sure that nobody is going to explicitly tell you they have an infection when they meet you.

Not only that, but your partner may have no idea he or she has an STI.

The only way to stay safe from STIs and maintain your sexual health responsibly is by using condoms – every time, no matter what.

This is especially important to take note of among the older demographic, where there’s still a common misconception that there’s no need for condoms if you can no longer have children. Regardless of fertility or other forms of contraception you might be using, condoms serve to protect you from STIs, and both sides of the relationship should have them around.

Maintain your good judgement

A lot of people rely on drugs or alcohol to ease into the situation and “loosen up” when meeting someone new. Again, you have the freedom to do whatever you wish – just make sure that you own it, that you have the confidence and your best interests in mind.

Overdoing it with either of those two will definitely cloud your judgement – and that’s where it will be difficult for you to keep your best interests in mind. Whether it’s engaging with someone you don’t actually feel that comfortable with or forgetting to use a condom during sex, clouded judgement increases the chances of turning an otherwise pleasant experience into a sour one.

Source: unsplash.com

The rising popularity of online dating is no coincidence. People feel comfortable with these platforms, and they present a convenient and exciting way to meet potential partners and like-minded people. But as more and more people use online dating apps, there’s a whole new dialogue opening up around sexual health and safety. Whether you’re entirely new to online dating or have an established profile, keep these points in mind to make sure that you navigate the landscape to your best interest.

Throwing Shade: Easy Ways to Shade Your Patio or Deck

By Guest Blogger, Diana S.

Throwing Shade: Easy Ways to Shade Your Patio or Deck

If you’re one of those people who love to spend time outside, getting some fresh air and enjoying the sound of nature, then you must create a practical deck or patio to quench your thirst for the outdoors. However, no matter how much you love nature and all things natural, the sun can be quite nasty in the summer and even chase you inside where it’s cool and air-conditioned. But if you install the right type of shading for your outdoor space, there’s nothing to be afraid of, not even the sun!

Colorful umbrellas

Sometimes, the oldest and least expensive way is the best way to do things and the same goes for shade! Patio or deck umbrellas are definitely the most popular and a completely foolproof way to add some sun protection to your outdoor area. These decorative umbrellas come in all sizes, shapes, colors and materials, so no matter the style you’re trying to achieve, you’ll make it! Plus, once the outdoor season is over, you can just close your umbrella, store it in the garage and wait for the next spring! Just make sure to secure your umbrella tightly, especially if you live in a windy area—you don’t want to be seen chasing one of these down the street!

Draw the curtains

If you want to add some shade AND some movement and softness to your deck or patio, you might want to add curtains to your outdoor structures. Outdoor curtains also offer some light sun protection and are quite inexpensive and easy to install. You can even DIY these curtains with some canvas and grommets! Just imagine airy curtains flowing in the gentle summer breeze while you sip a cocktail on your deck—it’s a really magical sight!

Set sail!

Another practical and affordable way to provide your outdoor space with some shelter is to invest in shade sails. These sails act as a light canopy that can cover your seating or dining area, deck hot tub or even your outdoor kitchen! They are quite easy and fast to install and they take up very little space which makes them perfect for tiny decks or patios. Shade sails also come in various sizes, colors and shapes and can look very futuristic in any space.

Build a lush pergola

If you really want to go big with shade and privacy, you should opt for a beautiful pergola. This freestanding feature will not only provide your patio or deck with all the shade that you need but also help define the space and add a dose of flair to it! You can go very old-fashioned with a wooden pergola with all sorts of ornaments or opt for something very modern and high-tech. Today, there are light aluminum pergolas with practical retractable roof systems that allow you to let the sunshine in or provide shade with the touch of a button! No matter where you are, you can control your roof with your smartphone. The weather will never surprise you again!

Let nature take care of you

If you’re not in a hurry to give your space a lot of shade, just plant some greenery, have patience and watch as nature takes care of your shade needs! Plant a fast-growing tree next to your patio or deck and in a few years, you’ll not only have a bit of shade, but also a priceless addition to your outdoor space. If you’re patient enough, your tree will live to see your grandkids playing underneath it and serve as a home to many little birds, insects and critters! Just make sure to plant your trees strategically, because they can also reduce your home’s cooling bill in the summer and heating bill in the winter!

These practical shades will not only make your patio or deck more comfortable but also add interest to your outdoor space! So, don’t be afraid to throw some shade!

The Art of Turning Your Backyard into an Outdoor Living Space

By Guest Blogger, Kevin J.

The Art of Turning Your Backyard into an Outdoor Living Space

How many times do you look out at the sunny day and wish you had an outdoor space that was more usable? Whether you have a large backyard or one that is simple, small and enclosed, we’re willing to bet that it is under-used, so what can be done to make it more usable?

We have taken a look at three excellent ideas that will encourage you to make more use of the outdoors, and what could be better than enjoying the sun in your own personal outdoor living space? So, here are our ideas – start with these, and you’ll soon have a great outdoor living space that you can enjoy to the fullest.

Lay a Deck

All the rage at the moment – and with good reason – decking should be the first thing you consider if you want to transform your outdoor space into a viable living area. You might think it expensive, but in fact it is one of the most cost-effective methods of bringing alive an outdoor area. Whether you have a simple courtyard-type space or a larger garden area, a decking space either attached to the house or in a separate part of the yard has many advantages: it is easy to keep clean, rainwater drains from it, and will be a great place with heaters installed for use in even the winter evenings.

You can install decking yourself – there are many videos online that tell you how – but we strongly recommend that you check out local providers as a professional job will give you better results, and you may be surprised how affordable it will be.

Add a Gazebo

The sun is beautiful, warm – and dangerous! Even with ultra-levels of sun screen on your skin, it’s still possible to get too much sun, and if you’re one of those people who suffer from the heat, some shade is always welcome. So, in addition to your beautiful new deck, why not add a gazebo?

These affordable and very practical items take the form of an open-sided tent – although there are many you can buy with optional side screens for protection against the wind – and are easy to set up and take down. So, you can choose whether you want to have a permanent gazebo or one that can be used only when necessary, and there are some surprisingly attractive models on the market, too. It’s worth having a look around at the different sizes, and perhaps picking one that covers a portion of your deck and leaves the rest open to the sun.

Build a Fire Pit

Great for those evenings in the fall when the nights become a little cooler, a fire pit is an excellent addition to your back yard. It’s one for the adults, of course, but keep the kids at a safe distance and they can enjoy it too. It’s easy to do: clear a nice flat area – preferably close to your decking so you get the full effect – and build a circular wall with bricks. It’s best to cement them in place if you want it to be a decent one.

Leave a few holes in the wall for the air to get through and build it to a sensible height so that you can drop wood in – and you have a great fire pit for added warmth on cooler nights, meaning your outdoor space is more usable than ever!

These are just a few of the ideas we came up with for making your outdoor space more usable, and we reckon there are many more, so make up a list and you’ll soon enjoy the backyard more than you ever thought you could.
