What Really Damages Your Skin?

What Really Damages Your Skin?

It’s surprising just how delicate skin can be. The skin on your body is responsible for protecting everything on the inside. It holds in moisture and helps to prevent germs, dirt, and bacteria from reaching essential organs. It will give you away, too. Your skin will reveal when you’re unwell, or not looking after yourself, by changing texture and color. It will even give away your age!

Of course, there are parts of your body where the skin is so thin it must be protected carefully. Your lips are just one area where special attention needs to be given. The reason for the skin being so thin is so that you have even greater sensitivity. And it also offers that great rouge color too!

So how can you protect the skin when it is fragile and delicate? And what are the consequences of damaging it? Here are just a few signs of damage to your skin, and how you can help your body heal again:

Cuts

Cuts can happen at any time anywhere. Your pet might catch you with a claw. Or maybe you caught yourself on a zipper. We cut ourselves chopping vegetables, and the pain of a papercut makes you appreciate the digital world so much more! Of course, there are deliberate cuts and incisions that we might have. Operations and surgery often require a cut or two, followed by stitches. You might have had a caesarean, or even keyhole surgery.

Sometimes, you don’t mind bearing your battle scars. But there are times when you wish you could just hide it. Scarred skin is different from the skin around the cut because it was produced differently. There are products like Dermefface FX7 that might help reduce the appearance of that scar tissue. This type of approach can help you feel less conscious about it. When a scar brings back bad memories, reducing its appearance can sometimes be beneficial in other ways.

Scrapes

What child hasn’t scraped their knee? Most kids have bumps and scrapes. It’s a sign of a healthy, active childhood. Sometimes it will bring on a teary, especially if it feels sore. A scrape literally scrapes off the top few layers of skin. These are often the toughest layers of skin, even for children. It means the newer, more sensitive and fragile layers of skin can be left exposed. A little bleeding is common, and sometimes it can produce a yellowy liquid that looks quite awful.

Taking care of a scrape is simple to do, but you might want to leave it open to the air to ‘dry out.’ Antiseptic cream or spray can initially sting so much it’s worse than the original injury! However, it’s worth using, especially if the scrape came from the ground or other dirty surface. It’s up to you if you dress this. Consider the open area’s vulnerability to additional abrasion or germs. Scrapes rarely scar, but the healed skin can sometimes feel or appear less smooth.

Stretch Marks

So many women wear their pregnancy stretch marks with pride. They are a great testament to an incredible experience. Of course, they can also be marks that bother others. It’s not just pregnancy that causes stretch marks. Weight gain, or simply growing rapidly can stretch the skin and leave marks.

Your circulation in that area can give them a more prominent appearance. Sometimes they are white and barely noticeable if your skin tone matches closely. Other times, they are red or silvery, especially in colder weather. This makes them much more noticeable and can make you feel quite self-conscious at times. Keep the circulation in the area healthy with gentle massage and exercise. You can also try body butters to offer the skin extra moisture. This is thought to help the skin retain more elasticity to cope with the stretch.

Acne

Every teen’s worst nightmare! However, acne can turn up at any time in life. While it is often caused by hormone changes, the health of the skin can degrade to prolong the infections and other problems we term as acne. As a teen, there are many medicated creams that can help reduce the inflammation and bring the pus under control. As an adult, these are often too strong and could cause further damage.

The scarring from acne isn’t just caused by trying to drain the affected areas with your fingertips (squeezing). Long-term infections like this fill cavities in your skin that are then left empty, leaving pockmarks. Some laser treatments have been developed to reduce the visibility of these problems. Dermabrasion can help smooth the skin too.

Boils

Boils anywhere on your body are incredibly painful. It is often best left to a doctor to lance and drain them, to reduce the spread of the germs and prevent infection. Sometimes antibiotics are required. Some boils on the face, neck, ear or head can be quite dangerous, so see your doctor.

The trouble with boils is they stretch the skin a lot. Once they are drained, you might be left with excess skin and a scar from the cut. As boils often appear in places others can’t see it might not bother you. But if it is a problem, it’s important to care for this skin. Keep it clean and uncovered if possible. Change any dressings as directed. When it has healed, keep it moisturized without letting it get oily.

Burns

Minor burns in the kitchen often don’t bother us once we’ve taken the heat out of it under a cold tap. More serious burns should be treated by a medical professional. The heat that is trapped under the skin causes blisters. If these burst, germs, and bacteria can get inside and cause nasty infections. This is why you should never pop blisters!

Eventually, the fluid inside a blister will drain away on its own. It may be painful while it is there, and may leave some faint mark when it has gone. However, the burnt area itself is likely to scar. Dry burns can look like any other scar – white and stood proud from the skin. Scalds or chemical burns can vary in color and texture. It’s important these are treated by your doctor, and then follow their recommendation for a cream application.

Cysts

Small white lumps in the skin might be cysts or milia. They are often hard and round, and firmly attached deep in the skin. Removing them can cause bleeding, infection and permanent damage to that area of skin. It’s possible they are caused by old, dead skin cells grouping together if they are not sloughing away naturally. In some areas, particularly around the eye, they can be a sign of high cholesterol. Check with your doctor or dermatologist.

What Is Your Face Trying To Tell You?

What Is Your Face Trying To Tell You?

Credit

We always notice any changes to our face straight away. After all, it’s the part of our body that we instantly see in the mirror! As the skin on the face is particularly sensitive, there can often be changes to the pigmentation, and new blemishes may appear. But are they something you should be worrying about? You just need to understand what your face is trying to tell you, and then you will know whether you need to book an appointment with a doctor…

Puffy Cheeks And Jowls

If you notice that your cheeks and jowls seem a lot puffier than normal, it’s a potential sign that you have been including too much gluten in your diet. So, you can reverse these symptoms by cutting down on things like white bread, pasta, and pastry. However, it might take a couple of weeks for the puffiness to totally go away. If you need an instant remedy, you should apply some rosehip seed oil to the skin as this has been proven to calm down any inflation.

Credit

Constant Cold Sores

Do you always suffer from cold sores? These are small blister-like irritations that occur along the lips. You will normally experience a burning or itching sensation before the actual sore develops. The sores are caused by the herpes virus and will repeatedly appear if treatment doesn’t completely remove the virus. Are you asking yourself “can herpes be cured?” Lots of people wonder the same as there are lots of myths surrounding the virus. Thankfully, though, the virus is easily cured once you start taking the correct medication.

Drooping Face

If you ever notice that one side of your face is drooping down, you should call for an ambulance straight away. That’s because this is a sign that you are having a stroke. Usually, a drooping face appears alongside other symptoms, such as a difficulty to speak and blurred vision. But even if you only experience a drooping face, you should still seek medical help as sometimes the symptoms don’t manifest together. Plus, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Pale Patches On Your Skin

You should never ignore any pale patches that appear on your face. These are a sign that you are suffering from Vitiligo. This disease can affect the skin all over the body but, more often than not, it appears on the face, neck, and hands. Sometimes, it can also be found on the scalp. It is important you get checked out if you think you have Vitiligo as if it is left to develop it can increase your chance of developing diabetes and other serious conditions.

Puffy Eyes

Do you wake up every morning with very puffy eyes? Don’t worry; it just means you aren’t getting enough sleep! Try to go to bed an hour earlier, and you will find that you wake up feeling a lot more refreshed and with a lot less puffiness around the eyes!

So, next time your skin is trying to tell you something, you need to listen!

How To Stop Your Office Damaging Your Skin

How To Stop Your Office Damaging Your Skin

Modern life is hard on your complexion. We care very much about what we look like yet we subject our skin to many damaging situations and to a lot of stress. It can only take so much. Eventually, it will start to look dull and tired. It loses elasticity and texture and dry patches start to appear. You may also notice the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.

When you start to investigate what could be the cause of your skin problems you should start to think about your office! It could be the place where you work that is causing the problem. Luckily, there are also several things that you can do about it. Before you try out a radical procedure read these simple tips.

Office life and skin damage

The modern office is a harsh environment for skin. The main culprit in the damage is air conditioning. We all welcome air conditioning on a hot day. Without it, we would find it almost impossible to work in many climates. However, it does come with a price. Offices with air conditioning have very low humidity levels and this is what causes the problem.

When you are in an area of high humidity, the moisture does not leave your skin. However, when you are in an environment where the humidity is low, the water will leave your skin rapidly and your body will struggle to replenish it.

The glare from PC monitors does not help. You could sit in front of one for over 8 hours a day and they can have a drying effect on the skin. If you are not able to get up and get a drink whenever you want, it is easy to become dehydrated. When your hydration levels are low, your skin is the first organ to suffer.

Looking after your skin in the office

You have to go to work and turning off the air conditioning is not an option so you need to find other ways to help your skin cope. The main way to protect your skin is to help it seal in moisture with a natural product. Many women have found that effective hyaluronic acid serum for skin is the best way to do this. It is a natural product that will work in harmony with your body by deeply hydrating and plumping up the skin. Your fine lines and wrinkles will diminish as the product works like a ‘moisture magnet’ to trap the skin’s own natural moisture and guard against the humidity of the office environment.

If you are able to sit back a little from your monitor it will reduce the effects of the heat and light on your skin. Also, take a small bottle of water with you to your desk so that you can sip it whilst you are working. Frequent breaks will do your whole body good.

Try to get out of the office at lunchtime for some fresh air and spritz your skin with water to refresh you before you head back into the office.

Essential Points You’ve Got to Consider Before Cosmetic Surgery

Essential Points You’ve Got to Consider Before Cosmetic Surgery

If there’s something you want to change about your face or body, you might be considering cosmetic surgery to get what you want. It’s one option to make permanent changes that you’re often not able to make in other ways. However it’s a big and often expensive commitment, so you need to consider some important things before you make your decision.

Your Reasons for Considering Surgery

You should think very carefully about why you’re considering cosmetic surgery. It can help you to feel better about the way you look, but it’s not the answer to all your problems. If you’re hoping it will change your whole life, you could end up disappointed.

The Results You’re Looking For

It’s important to be realistic about the results you can achieve with cosmetic surgery. Thinking about what you expect the outcome to be is essential. You should have a good idea of what you want before you go under the knife and your surgeon needs to understand what you’re looking for.

What Could Go Wrong

Any surgery is a risk, so you need to think about all of the outcomes that could occur. Knowing what could go wrong during or after surgery can be a little frightening, but you need to know if you want to make an informed decision.

The Recovery Period

Giving yourself time to recover is essential after having surgery. So you should think about how much time you can take off work or whether you’ll be able to rest for a while after your procedure.

Baby Bump: How To Make Your Pregnancy More Comfortable

Baby Bump: How To Make Your Pregnancy More Comfortable

pexels-photo-59894Image source

For all of the magic that comes with being a mum-to-be, the glow, the excitement, the nursery preparations and the beginning of an entirely new life, being pregnant was never going to be the most uncomfortable of experiences. You have a little human slowly getting bigger and bigger inside your belly. It’s hardly nine months in a spa, for you that is; it is for your little one. Just trying to get comfortable on your sofa can be a challenge more complex than the Davinci Code.

Being pregnant just comes with a whole new set of aches, pains, cramps and all round discomforts that you have never experienced. Places that have never been sore before suddenly become sore simply because you walked across the kitchen. It’s crazy.

Don’t despair, though. We have done a little bit of researching and a little bit of chit chatting with other moms, and here are their top tips on staying comfy (or at least as comfy as possible) during your pregnancy.

The Blessed Body Pillow

So many mums-to-be don’t allow themselves the privilege of a full body pillow because they can’t justify spending that money. Yeah, they are expensive but, honey, you are pregnant. There is nothing out there that you don’t deserve. You’re creating life, that means you deserve every luxury going, and the body pillow tops this list according to our mom research. Back pains, aching hips, pressure on your ribcage; no wonder you can’t get comfy in the day or sleep well at night. That’s where a body pillow will totally rock your world. Ribs, bump and hips all get that extra bit of “ooooh, yes” feeling. If you don’t know which body pillow to get, read some reviews, speak to friends, and then go with the Snoogle Pillow that you can find here https://leachco.com/products/snoogle. It’s the most popular one as far as we can tell. And yes, yes you do deserve it.

The Constant Heartburn

You’ll start to notice pretty early on (we’re talking the first trimester) that heartburn and indigestion are going to be with you for the long hall, and maybe even the dreaded nasal drip too (especially later on in your baby-brewing). To cap the nasal drip on its head because it is the easiest to do so, we recommend you check out this link https://homeremedyshop.com/post-nasal-drip/ which tells you all sorts of ways you can cure it naturally – ginger, baking soda, steam etc. For heartburn and indigestion, the bane of any mom’s to be pregnancy, the mom’s we spoke to swore by papaya enzyme. They would take the moment they finished the last mouthful of every meal. Other ways we have heard of helping yourself include Aloe Vera, warm milk, and almonds.

The Stretch Marks

This is always a worry for moms. Wanting your pre-baby body back is only natural, and it in due course you can get it back. But don’t forget that you are creating a miracle, your body is working miracles, and that is something to love. Your post-miracle body is something to be proud of. Of course, the best thing for stretch marks is no other than our good friend coconut oil. It is just the best. It is so good for blemishes and eczema and, yes, stretch marks too. Just get a little bit in your palms and rub them over your belly before bed each night and then sleep (on your body pillow) while the magic happens. Voila. Stretch marks kept at bay.

The Urge To Snack

Chances are, even before you got pregnant the idea of going more than ninety minutes without a little food top-up didn’t sit well with you. We just love food too much and we don’t care who knows it. When you’re pregnant, though, especially in the first trimester, going ninety minutes without something can make you feel really sick, which is why you should always have a supply of snacks on hand. Whatever takes your fancy, add them to your stash. Put some in your handbag, in your car’s glove compartment, by your bed, in the living room (so that you don’t have to waddle to the kitchen), everywhere and anywhere you can think of. Sure, you may be telling yourself that you can go the three hours between breakfast and lunch, and maybe you can, by why run the risk of feeling sick. Not only that, but it will really help your indigestion and heartburn if you eat small amounts regularly.

The Exercise

Marathons may well be out of the equation (phew!), but some sort of light exercise is going to go a huge way when it comes to making you feel that much more comfortable. You may be thinking that we are crazy for saying this, but we’re not. When you’re pregnant, your muscles and ligaments are going to feel like they are getting tighter and tighter the further along in your pregnancy you get. That’s why it is going to really help you to keep them feeling loose, not just for day to day living and comfort but for the delivery too. Don’t worry, exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous. Just a little walking once a day, even if it is around town with a touch of retail therapy to motivate you, or yoga or Pilates or something. It all helps hugely. Just make sure you listen to your body. Overdoing it can be easy to do, so take it as steady as possible.

The Chiropractor

The thing with pregnancy is, well, your body is changing; it is getting thrown out of alignment left right and center. Yeah, thank you very much new hormones and baby bump. Your center of gravity has shifted and that can cause a few aches and pains here and there, especially in your lower back and pelvis. That’s where getting on the chiropractor’s bed can really make a difference. They will be able to help ease some of that extra pain and alleviate those aches, which will help you through the delivery process by making you more comfortable. Comfortable is good.

Is Your Home Making You Ill?

Is Your Home Making You Ill?

For many of us, our home is our castle, and it is the one space in which we feel most safe and secure. But is that really the case?

Even though you may think your house is completely perfect, there could be some small imperfections that you aren’t really aware of. And these imperfections could be having a negative effect on your health. Want to make sure that your house isn’t dragging your family’s health down? Here are some things you need to check.

bottles-1868175_960_720Image From Pixabay

The Refrigerator

If you already throw out old food from your refrigerator on a regular basis, you might think that you are doing everything you can in the battle against food poisoning. Think again! There are some very sneaky ways your fridge could be increasing the spread of germs. Does your fridge have an electrical coil in it? This freezes once in awhile and then thaws. When it thaws, it drips water, which needs to be cleaned up regularly If it isn’t cleaned, it will evaporate and spread germs throughout your home. And don’t forget to wipe out the vegetable tray every now and then!

Heating And Cooling Systems

One of the biggest causes of illnesses caused in the home is the heating and air conditioning system. Air conditioning can leave traces of water it the system ducts. These small pools are great for encouraging germs and bacteria to breed. All of the bacteria can then cause respiratory problems, such as asthma and allergies. To make sure your family never suffers from these conditions, make sure your systems are professionally serviced every year.

Soft Furnishings

We all have our favorite chairs and sofas that we love to lounge in. And I’m sure you also enjoy spending lazy weekend mornings in bed! But did you know that your soft furnishings and bed sheets could be hiding a dirty secret? Over time, dust mites will collect in these soft items and make themselves at home. Bed bugs could congregate in between your sheets. These can cause skin irritation. While it is impossible to remove all dust mites from your home, a thorough cleaning every couple of months should keep their numbers down to a minimum.

Cleaning Products

You may think that cleaning products are one of the most helpful tools you can have in your home to help you in the fight against germs and bacteria but, in actual fact, they could be doing more harm than good. That’s because the strong chemicals in the products could be carcinogenic and cause cancer as well as headaches and skin irritations. Don’t worry; you don’t have to stop cleaning your home. Instead, you should just make the switch to natural cleaning products. Most of these are organic and eco-friendly, and aren’t harmful to humans or animals.

I hope this blog post hasn’t scared you too much, but it is always worth knowing exactly how our health could be affected by the environment around us. At least now you know how to improve things!

Tips on How to Fight the Plights of Old Age

Tips on How to Fight the Plights of Old Age

If you don’t want to ‘grow old gracefully’, and you want to fight the impact ageing has on you, then you have every right to do so. If you want to fight the plights induced by old age, then you do so. Whether this means doing all you can to fight the appearance of ageing. Or whether it means doing all you can to fight the ailments of ageing. You do it. And if you choose to do it, make sure to check out some tips on how to do so below.

First of all you should know that you can be as beautiful as you are wise when you grow old, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing this. You can fight the impact ageing has on your skin in the form of wrinkles, and there are now more ways to do this than ever before. You can do so by making changes to your lifestyle. And one change you can make is to simply ensure that you always get a healthy amount of sleep, and that you always sleep on your back. This is because sleeping on your front or your side can etch lines into your face, and when these lines get etched in enough they will be tough to get rid of. Another change you can make to your lifestyle in order to fight the plight of wrinkles is to stop smoking. But you don’t just have to make changes to your lifestyle as you take this venture. No, you could seek a BOTOX injection in order to fight wrinkles too. Whichever route you choose, just be sure that there is nothing wrong in wanting to tackle wrinkles and there’s nothing wrong with actively tackling them. They are one of the biggest tell-tale signs of ageing, so there is nothing wrong with them being the first plight of old age that you seek to fight.

But it’s not just about fight the appearance of ageing. It’s also about fighting the plights of old age that physically hold you back from living. And one thing that can hold you back during your twilight years is bad eye health. Ageing can have a detrimental impact on eyesight, and you shouldn’t allow for your eyesight to be changed in this way. A way to do this is to make changes to your diet. By opting for cereals that are ravished in whole grain. By choosing foods that are a good source of protein. And by cooking in a way that makes any fats you consume as healthy as can be. By implementing these three aspects into your diet, you will be doing all you can to fight the plight of old age that is bad eye health.

Now, this is not to say that you have to fight these plights of old age. It’s just to say that you should fight them if they ever make you feel uncomfortable. Neither is it a case of ‘growing old disgracefully’. It’s a case of wanting to look and feel as great as you can, for as long as you can.

You are Flawless: Easy Ways to Prevent Acne and Dry Skin

You are Flawless: Easy Ways to Prevent Acne and Dry Skin

Spots, zits, pimples, whatever you want to call them, these little devils can be a nuisance to a woman’s self-esteem and confidence in her appearance. If you’ve suffered from acne, and it is likely you have or will have at some point during your life, you understand the annoyance and frustration which they can bring. A red spot on the face is difficult to hide and requires makeup to cover it, which can only exacerbate the problem. After all the prodding, pressing and damaging your skin, dryness typically follows, which can be another pain. To prevent these skin problems from ever occurring, here are a few easy ways to keep your skin healthy and acne-free.

pexels-photo-192474Image credit

Wash your face twice daily

This might seem like an obvious one, but it is the most effective for quick results. Around 20 percent of women in their 20s and 30s suffer from acne and one of the main reasons is lack of personal hygiene. Find a good face cleanser, a bowl of warm water and a soft towel to pat your face dry. Make sure you don’t rub with the towel, this can spread any bacteria from the acne and worsen the outbreak. If you can, stick to a routine daily where you schedule time to clean your face. Moisturizer can prevent dry skin effectively, but only use it if you currently have no areas of acne on the face. Go to your local beauty store and pick a moisturizer which is scent-free. There is nothing worse than choosing the wrong type of skin products, which can cause skin irritation. To solve this problem, do your research before buying and ask a shop assistant for advice.

Drink more water

The question of how much water to drink has always been a conundrum, but the most common answer is around eight glasses per day. If we were all perfectly honest, we would say that we don’t drink enough, but the health benefits are countless. Not only is water good for your skin, but it can fix other beauty-related problems and improve the internal function of your body. Issues such as, withered hair, brittle fingernails, strong-smelling body odour and headaches, are all a result of not drinking enough water. One great tip is to have a glass of water with every meal, that way you are receiving your daily portion without really noticing it. For those of us who don’t enjoy the taste of tap water, invest in one of the best RO systems to filter and remove any impurities in the water. By doing this you will have better water and be on the right track for healthier skin.

Hands away from the face

It may sound odd, but your hands harbour a decent amount of bacteria, and if you touch your face, that’s wear it all goes. Did you know that something so silly like touching your face too much, can give you the flu? There are a few other reasons why you shouldn’t keep touching your face, and dirty skin is one of them. Items such as, phones, doorknobs, and keyboards contain millions of germs, and if they get on your face, an unwanted acne breakout will occur. If you have a habit of placing your hands on your face, try holding a stress ball to distract yourself. This bad habit could be the reason for your spots. So next time you’re watching Netflix, keep your hands away from the face!

Get a good night’s rest

Yes, sleep is the answer to many health issues, and one of them is the repairing of your skin! The importance of sleep is underestimated and should be as high on your health list as that of eating. Who would’ve known that a lack of sleep, even two or three hours less, could cause a spot breakout?  If you’re struggling to sleep, check out these tips for getting better shut-eye. From reading a book before bed to doing a substantial amount of exercise in the day, these simple activities can maintain and regulate a healthy sleep pattern.

Avoid wearing too much makeup

Some of us couldn’t bear the thought of wearing no makeup for the day, but if you want cleaner, more spot-free skin, this might have to happen. Of course, there are some products which are made for acne-prone skin, but the safest, fastest bet to clear up acne is to go makeup-free for a while. Not only do the ingredients themselves irritate your skin, but if you forget to wipe a day’s worth of makeup off before going to bed, the bacteria is festering on your skin all night. So do yourself and your skin a favour, go natural for a few weeks!

Do some exercise

Slotting time in for exercise is also crucial for your health and a way to get better, spot-free skin. There is a range of great exercises to choose from and enjoy doing. Squats, sit-ups, light jogs and swimming, the list is endless. As you exercise, blood flow increases and carries nutrients and oxygen to cells throughout your body. Exercise can also decrease stress, which in turn, reduces acne and eczema. So, by following a fun, simple workout everyday, not only are you losing weight, but you’re preventing those nasty spots and dry skin!

Eat these types of foods

Food glorious food, this is definitely true and applies to those foods which help our skin. Many foods have been proven to possess a vast amount of health properties which help to improve the quality of our skin. Dark berries, watercress, and red grapes are full of skin clearing antioxidants. Tomatoes aid collagen production which keeps skin firm. Next time you make spaghetti bolognese add some fresh garlic! You might smell after, but it’s worth it! Garlic helps kill any unwanted bacteria in your body which stops skin infections and acne. There are an abundance of Twitter channels which are dedicated to the acne-removal cause and which give fantastic tips, one of them is AcneSkinSite.

Hopefully, at least one of these methods works for your skin. If not, consider popping down to the doctors and getting some acne treatment. We can’t let spots dictate our life.
