Postpartum Project

Postpartum Project

New mothers can suffer from depression during or after their pregnancy. Research shows 20 percent of women experience some form of depression or anxiety; however the severity differs from case to case. In fact, one in seven women experience a more severe form of hopelessness called Postpartum Depression (PPD). Women who experience PPD in their first pregnancy are more likely to experience it again in their next one as well. There are a variety of different treatment methods, but massage therapy has been proven to relieve physical discomfort and ailments of depression.

There are several symptoms of PPD which usually emerge within four weeks after childbirth. Some symptoms include panic attacks, guilt at not being to measure up to perceived standards, uncontrollable thoughts that worsen their anxieties and insomnia. PPD can also make a mother fear being alone with the newborn and have repeated thoughts to hurt the baby or self harm. PPD can hamper a mother’s ability to bond with her newborn or care for them properly. This can cause the child’s emotional and mental health to be negatively affected as well as pose a threat to their physical health during infancy.

Massage therapy can relieve physical discomfort and help boost mental health. In fact, one study showed massage therapy could reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, by 31 percent. A 2010 analysis of clinical trials noted that consistent massage therapy can help to lessen the effects of depression. Massage therapy can be combined with other treatments such as psychotherapy, estrogen therapy and home nurse visits to decrease PPD symptoms. Mothers can also attend a class to learn how to massage their infants to create a stronger bond with their baby.

A recent study followed a group of pregnant women during a 12 week period. They participated in massages and short bi weekly yoga sessions. They stated they had decreased back and leg pain, anxiety and feelings of depression. Researches noticed a drop in cortisol levels, excessive fetal activity and premature birth rates.

While massage therapy has been noted to boost the immune system, ease asthma symptoms and ease pain, we now know it can be help mothers who are suffering from PPD. Anyone can be affected, so understand the symptoms and be available to help new mothers to find appropriate treatment.

For more information on how massage therapy can help women with PPD, check out this resource from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine:

How to Stay Fit by Forming These 3 Simple Habits

By Guest Blogger, Chloe S.

How to Stay Fit by Forming These 3 Simple Habits

It can be quite hard to get in shape and maintain the healthy and fit lifestyle. It seems like everyone has their own way, but how do you know which one is the best for you and your body? First of all, you must understand that living a healthy lifestyle requires a lot of hard work and discipline, but most of all, patience.

Knowing that changes you desire take time, you must prepare to adapt and overcome challenges you face along the way. That’s why we’re here. We’ve searched the web and we’ve made a list of 3 habits that can help you a lot when it comes to staying fit. So, without further ado, let’s get straight to it.

Follow the routine and make a schedule

A good night’s rest is quite essential for a healthy life. While you’re sleeping your body recovers from all the stress it has been through, whether it’s exercise, or anything else. There are a lot of studies that have proven that a good amount of sleep every night elevates productivity levels and increases gym related abilities, as well as mental activity. If you’re sticking to a solid sleeping schedule, you will soon start to notice some improvements on yourself.

Another thing that helps you develop discipline and maintain a healthy lifestyle is keeping to a certain routine. The time when you wake up should be the most important part of your day. It should be somewhat of a launching pad for your day, and it should help you set off. Following a morning routine can really help you with focus, concentration, and general preparation for a busy day.

Focus on your diet

One of the biggest challenges people face when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle is controlling their diet. It can be very hard to change your nutrition, and we’ve all had those cravings once in a while, but there’s actually a way you can organize your diet with ease.

Centralize your diet around a specific food group, and stay focused on it. If you have to change the original plan, don’t do it too often. Every person has their own ideal nutrition, but some general advice is to eat as many veggies as possible and avoid eating too much meat, bread or fat. If you have specific needs, when it comes to food, the best advice you can get is – talk to a professional nutritionist. They can help you select the best possible types of food for a healthy lifestyle.

Engage in physical activity

Most of us are spending quite a lot of time sitting. Whether it’s your job or casual internet browsing, sitting can seriously damage your health. Too much sitting can cause heart diseases, spinal deformation, vision problems, and many more serious conditions which can cause serious problems. That’s why you have to become physically active.

You don’t have to run to the gym right away, and it would probably do you more harm than good, anyway, but you should start exercising slowly. Even small series of exercises, for example – half an hour of jogging, pushups, and pull-ups, can be of significant help, but you need to exercise more if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Find an interesting outdoor activity you like. Taking a long hike, hanging out in the garden or riding downhill and mountain bikes  across the exciting track are great things to do, and they are all having quite the positive impact on your overall health. Learn to love exercising and physical activity, and make it into something you will carry with you through your life. Once you start loving the physical activity you’re doing, you become somewhat “addicted” to it, which in turn helps you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Final thoughts

Starting a healthy lifestyle can be a bit challenging at the start, but as you progress, you will start noticing amazing improvements, and most importantly, you will start feeling better. Keep in mind that all you need is willpower and some planning. Focusing on your health is the best possible thing you can do, as it can help you both with the way you feel and what others feel about you.

By Guest Blogger Annie J.

How to Eat to Enhance Optimal Adrenal Functions

For proper optimal adrenal optimization, one must eat a balanced diet. Most of the chemicals that should be present towards improving the functions of our adrenal system can only be supplemented by foods we eat. A person must be choosy about the type of food to eat for him or her to maintain a balanced adrenal function.

Adrenal glands are essential parts of our body. They are situated on top of the two kidneys. Adrenal glands function to secrete the hormones responsible for the healthier functioning of the body. The two primary hormones; the aldosterone and the cortisol are associated explicitly with adrenal gland.

The sex hormone androgen also comes from the adrenal gland. Too much or too little production of a specific hormone can cause adrenal disorders. Therefore, a person must ensure particular vitamins, minerals, proteins, and some herbs supplemented in their diets for an optimal adrenal functioning. The following supplements are helpful towards a healthier adrenal function.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and it helps in the generation of cortisol in the adrenal. It also helps in protection of free radicals and boosting the immune system. The C vitamin also works towards the healing of your adrenal glands. Specifically, liposomal or buffered types of vitamin C are recommended.

You can start supplementing the vitamin slowly then increase it with time. The vitamin should be taken when combined with bioflavonoids as it is in nature. Such supplement foods are orange, kale, red pepper, broccoli, quaver, grapefruit among others.

Vitamin B5, B6, and B12

Several minerals and vitamins prevent individuals from adrenal fatigue. Vitamins B5, B6, and B12 are crucial for cell metabolism. This supplement will improve your levels of energy and reduce fatigue.

Vitamin B5 adds a coenzyme A, and this helps to fat breakdown and cellular respiration including carbohydrates and proteins. B12 assists in energy production, maintaining the red blood cell and repair of the cell.

The Vitamin acts B6 in many of the pathways that are utilized to form hormones. The vitamin supplement can vary towards balancing adrenal gland performance. Vitamin E and D are also right supplements.

Magnesium

Magnesium is also crucial for adrenal functioning. Magnesium helps in the balancing the flow of energy. A person living in the deficiency of the mineral can portray symptoms of depression and fatigue. There are also signs of insomnia, cramping, and stiffness.

On the other hand, too much consumption of magnesium can result in stomach problems, especially indigestion. It is advisable one start the supplement of the mineral with 400mg to optimize its quantity. Magnesium food supplements are Asparagus, sweet potatoes, bananas, Swiss chard, and kale, cantaloupe among others.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live yeasts and bacteria that improve the health of your digestion system. They also reduce the adverse effects of your body antibiotics including lowering the level of stress. Therefore, this supplement is crucial for individuals suffering from digestion problems, thus recommended for treating adrenal fatigue.

Sufficient probiotics can assist the body in extracting nutrients from the taken food. Hence it will improve minerals and vitamins intake towards balancing the adrenal hormones. Probiotics as a supplement also support the immune system. It too limits regular sicknesses. Some of its components are acidophilus and lactobacillus.

Herbals

Herbals are natural supplements and are considered the best towards adrenal function optimization. The herb Rhodiola Rosea is an adrenal supplement popular in Scandinavia and Russia. It works to prevent poor circulation, muscle tension, fatigue, and depression.

Using it increases our body cortisol amount. Licorice root stimulates the production of hormones, maintain endurance, and balance the energy level. It also lengthens the circulation of your cortisol hormone. It is recommended that people suffering high blood pressure since it raises it.

Ashwagadha is another herb supplement for the adrenal hormone. It lowers or increases the level of cortisol hormone in the gland hence optimizing the synthesis.

The Siberian ginseng herb improves mental awareness and develops the body stamina. It is also not suitable for hypertension patients. Lastly, the supplement maca root helps in blood sugar and cortisol regulation.

It additionally increases the uptake of hormones into cells stabilization functionality of the body organs.

Other adrenal optimization supplements include compounds like omega-3, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, D-Ribose, and CoQ10. These supplements maintain proper body metabolism as well as keeping high energy in the body. Therefore towards proper functioning of your adrenal gland, always balanced all the above in your daily diet at the recommended level.

10 Foods that Parents Should Seriously Reconsider

It’s a common complaint that kids these days just aren’t going outside and getting enough exercise. While that’s true (largely in part to their growing tablet addictions), parents also play an immensely important role in their child’s health. The food that you pack in their lunch bags or put on their dinner plates is becoming increasingly important to fighting the obesity epidemic that has hit our country. Here’s an infographic (courtesy of homeremediesforlife.com) with 10 foods that parents should seriously reconsider serving their children, along with some helpful alternatives:

10 Benefits of Exercise that Will Surprise You

There are a lot of people who love the idea of exercising and losing weight. However, as soon as they start hitting the gym, they tend to be really lazy. You might be one of these people. Before you close your eyes to the idea of exercising, you must realize that exercise provides lots of benefits.

To begin with, it is a brain-health booster. Although exercise is known to improve physical fitness, it also great for boosting brain function. It helps improve the flow of the blood to the brain which also prevents memory-related diseases.

Exercising also helps people who hate looking and being old. If you exercise regularly, you can add 5 more years to your life. This is a scientific explanation since studies have shown that exercising slows down the aging of cells. Instead of investing on health supplements that are filled with chemicals, exercising would be a better option instead.

Your skin will also look better and make you look younger. Simple aerobic exercises increase the flow of blood to the skin, bringing more nutrients. Even with constant exposure to the heat of the sun, your skin will continue to have a healthy glow. Skin wounds also heal faster with the help of regular exercise.

You will realize that exercising provides a lot more benefits other than just the improvement of your physique. As you become older, you will understand that your body does not work the same way anymore and exercise is a must. Besides, it is an enjoyable process and even without realizing these benefits, you will still be motivated to do it.

There are many other benefits of exercising that could surprise you if you simply view the infographic below. The moment you see how your life could change with these benefits, you will be more motivated to start exercising now.

How to Choose Swimwear According to Your Skin Tone

By Guest Blogger, Diana S.

How to Choose Swimwear According to Your Skin Tone

Even though it seems completely unimportant, the color of your swimsuit can really affect your overall appearance. I don’t know why, but people still tend to neglect the importance of colors of their clothes, and especially swimwear. As the most revealing garment, your swimsuit should compliment your body all the way – from your curves all the way to your skin tone, in order to make you feel confident while wearing it.

Determine your skin tone

Roughly, you can divide skin tones into two categories: cool and warm. There are three ways to determine which one is yours.

  • Take something pure white, such as a sheet of paper or a towel, and hold it under your chin under the natural light source without any makeup on. Your skin has a warm tone if it is slightly yellow hue and a cool one if the hue is slightly blue.
  • If the veins on the underside of your wrists appear blue, you have a cool skin tone, and if they appear green you have a warm skin tone.
  • If gold looks better on you, your skin tone is warm, and if silver looks better on you, your skin tone is cold.

Now, when it comes to warm skin tones, they can be dark, medium or light with golden or caramel undertones. Generally, people with this skin tone have orange, yellow, red or gold hair with brown, green or hazel eyes.

Contrary, when it comes to cool tones, they can range from very pale porcelain with no color in the cheeks all the way to darker skin that has red or pink undertones. Hair usually has hints of violet, blue or silver with blue, grey, green, black or cool brown eyes.

Light skin plus light blond/red hair

Soft colors are the best choice here, since really bold colors can show off your pale side even though they make a statement. Opt for soft greens, pinks and beiges. Black can be either a hit or a miss depending on whether your skin is more on the cooler or the warmer side. Girls with red hair and this skin tone look fabulous in white and cobalt blue.

Avoid yellow and orange.

Creamy light skin plus dark hair

I like to call this combination the Snow White combo. The best choice for you would be any shade of blue such as turquoise, navy and baby blue, as well as emerald, plum and fuchsia.

Avoid white and orange.

Medium-light skin plus brown hair

Your warm side can be accentuated with deep reds or rich earthy tones. Peachy and beige tones as well as dark ones, such as black or grey, can make you look washed out a bit, so try to avoid them.

Olive/light brown skin plus medium/dark brown hair

Oh, aren’t you lucky? From black, over blues all the way to army greens – you can rock every single color on the wheel. You can also opt for bold and colorful signature swimwear from Australia if you want to spice things up a little bit and give your skin color some more depth.

Avoid colors such as brown and grey – they are just too lifeless for you.

Caramel skin plus brown/black hair

Caramel beauties have a built-in glow which they can enhance even more or tone down with the right choice of color. If you are one of them, opt for deep oranges, warmer purples or teal if you want to point out your golden character, and if you want a little calmer vibe that still catches the eye opt for mint green or navy.

Very dark skin plus dark hair

Chocolate beauties look amazing in pastel colors such as soft pinks, baby blues, pale yellows, minty greens and light greys. However, they should avoid white, brown and orange colors.

That would be it. I think we can all agree that, even though summer is the best season of them all, a perfect and flattering swimsuit on you can make it even better.

Natural Ways to Enhance Your Beauty

By, Tia Cristy

Natural Ways to Enhance Your Beauty

Beauty starts internally, there’s no doubt. However, we live in a time with resources, knowledge and technology where if you are unhappy with your physical appearance, you can change it.

If you have the financial means and a sound drive, finding a good doctor to perform surgeries like breast enhancement or procedures like laser therapy to enhance your outer appearance is a good option. Just remember to do your research on the procedure as well as the practice. It might be a quicker result than trying natural remedies, but with the pros there are cons to think of like cost, pain and recovery.

Trying to make yourself look better naturally comes at a cost too. In most cases, the results take time and patience, along with the most important factor… consistency.

And just like the saying goes, beauty is from the inside out, there’s absolute truth in that. Being internally healthy gives a healthier outward appearance.

Be sure to drink a lot of water and eat your vitamins

Drinking eight 8oz. of water on a daily basis is the minimum. Water is in everything we eat and drink. So even if you aren’t hitting the tap or bottle, you are getting some water, but the clear liquid is the best option to make sure you’re getting your daily dose. Water flushes the system. That includes the blood and organs, which when those things are in good shape so is your largest organ… your skin. Once you flush the system, you must restore it with the good stuff… minerals, vitamins and amino acids. You’ll find the best sources for all of these things in veggies and proteins like meats and fish as well as seeds and beans.

Eating the right things won’t just help reshape your figure because you’ll be treating your metabolism well, it also helps the skin look better. Eating specific foods can have bonus benefits, for example eating Fenugreek seeds frequently can stimulate breast enlargement. If you’re trying to lose a few pounds, try foods higher in B-12 to wake up a sluggish system.

Put some light in your life

We all need Vitamin D.  We can get it in a pill or by drinking some milk, but don’t forget the sun gives it to us naturally. I’m all about sunscreen, but studies have shown that we can’t collect Vitamin D from the sun while wearing sunblock. Studies recommend only spending five to ten minutes in the sun without sunblock. Now if you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the sun, you should put sunblock on a half-hour before going outside so it can soak into the skin for the full effect. Your future skin will thank you for it.

Also, another light is repairing skin damage. Red lights are being used to repair damage and stimulate collagen. These red lights can reduce red spots, tighten skin and diminish wrinkles. Skin cells shed by the thousands, so repair is possible, however consistency is key with this as well. But this kind of therapy can help you shed years.

Be Radiant

With a little effort and maintenance, you can change your outward appearance. Remember, you are beautiful. But radiance certainly comes from inside of you and imitates by how you treat others. So be radiant! Treat others well and treat yourself well and you’ll become aware of your outer beauty as a result.

Is Your Kitchen Encouraging A Healthy Lifestyle?

Is Your Kitchen Encouraging A Healthy Lifestyle?

When you are thinking about how your kitchen is designed, you may or may not find that it is conducive to your goal to be healthy. We all want to be as healthy as possible, and ensuring your kitchen is falling in line with that goal might prove to be essential. There are a number of ways in which your kitchen can help or hinder you attempt to be healthy, so it is worth looking at it in as much detail as possible. Without further ado, let’s look at what you can do to make your kitchen help you be healthier.

The Fruit Bowl

There is psychological research which claims to have found that if you have fruit on display you are more likely to eat more of it. Clearly, eating fruit is always good for you, so finding a prominent place for your fruit bowl is probably going to be a good idea. When your fruit bowl is in a clear spot, you will find yourself eating more fruit and there is no doubt that that will be beneficial for your health. You might even choose to have a veg bowl on display for those vegetables which can survive outside of the refrigerator. Try this and see – you might be surprised at what a difference it makes, and how quickly it makes it.

The Refrigerator

Speaking of the refrigerator, this too will need some attention if you really want to make your kitchen as health-conscious as possible. There is actually much to be said for the choice of refrigerator, and if you are stocking up a new kitchen or revamping an old one, it’s worth spending a little time finding the right one. Good quality sub zero refrigerators are designed so as to avoid cross-contamination. This in turn will mean that your vegetables and so on are much healthier to eat, contain less additional matter, and will also taste much better. Of course, you should endeavor to have sub zero refrigerator repair carried out regularly, so that it remains in the same condition and continues to be useful for this purpose.

The Atmosphere

If you can work towards an atmosphere which is happy, healthy and joyful, then it is likely that this will make a difference to how you feel about food in general. Attitude is everything: as long as you feel the right way, you will find that it is extremely easy to take the steps that you should be taking. Getting the atmosphere right can be tricky, of course, and it can take some time to perfect it, but it is worth spending that tie doing so, as it will profoundly alter the way that you approach the entire subject. A renovation is a great opportunity to get started on this, but you can do it at any time.

With the above taken care of, your kitchen is much more likely to help rather than hinder your progress towards a healthier you.

Bulking Up: How to Gain Weight Fast and Safely

Bulking Up: How to Gain Weight Fast and Safely

With the number of dieters trying to lose weight and eat less, there is a smaller amount of people who are trying just as hard to gain body mass. They may be looking for more muscles or just some extra fat to keep warm during winter, but the lack of focus on this struggle can make the battle even tougher.

It can be a frustrating hunt on the web for advice when you would like nothing better than to see those numbers rise – and everyone keeps categorizing calorie-dense food as unhealthy and something to steer clear off. Celery sticks and cucumbers, on the other hand, seem to be perfect snack options.

Not for us. Here is a generous portion of tips on how to gain weight a bit faster while still staying true to those health and fitness goals.

Eat frequently

The formula is just as simple for those looking to bulk up as those trying to shed some weight. When you eat more calories than your body is able to burn, you’re going to gain weight – and when you’re burning more calories than you’re consuming, you’re inevitably going to lose weight.

As simple as the formula is, it’s not always that easy to keep the calorie intake on the high at all times – especially not when your body tends to burn a ridiculous amount of energy when you’re not even paying attention.

Try to incorporate meals that are easy to eat on the go, such as smoothies and granola bars, and make sure your choices are calorie-dense while still being healthy. Bread, bananas, peanut butter – keep it coming, and remember that the healthy foods dieters are steering clear off are the perfect options for bulking up. Livestrong has a great list of foods you should choose, by the way, so help yourself.

Eat protein

As the building blocks of our body, so to speak, protein is your best friend when trying to gain weight. It is the single most important nutrient for gaining weight healthily and safely, so fill your fridge with eggs, chicken, and beans.

Keep in mind that protein tends to fill you up quite quickly, which is why it’s perfect for people who are looking to lose weight rather than gain it. If you’ve enjoyed a protein-dense breakfast such as eggs or Greek yogurt, try to remind yourself to eat a bit more during the day.

You may feel full, but you still need to reach that golden amount of calories that makes those numbers on the scale increase. Have a look at HomeSpaSelect for some reviews on the best scales as well, so that you get to track your weight gain journey accurately. It makes it a lot easier to remind yourself to eat more when you’re stuck at the same numbers.

While we all love food, it’s not easy to change the way your body looks. Make sure you have a chat with your doctor if you are underweight, by the way, as there may be an underlying problem you should deal with before you are able to increase your weight.

They may be able to give you more advice as well, so hand over your questions and have another portion in the meantime.

Confidence Is Key: Addressing Your Causes Of Low Self-Esteem

Confidence Is Key: Addressing Your Causes Of Low Self-Esteem

Sadly, I encounter too many girls that grow up with low self-esteem issues. This doesn’t mean they hate everything about themselves and wish they looked entirely different. It can mean there are a couple of things that really get them down and they pray they can change. When you think like this, you lose confidence in yourself. It can make you not want to go out as much as you don’t like the way you look.

Confidence is the key to living a happy and fulfilling life, so it’s time you got yours back! I’ve listed some of the main causes of low self-esteem, with some tips on how to address them for good.

Your Eyebrows

I remember the days when almost nobody cared about their eyebrows. Nowadays, they’re a crucial part of everyone’s look. If you’re born with really light eyebrows, it can be torture for you as it looks like you have none. Likewise, some people have really bushy eyebrows or ones in bad shape – there are loads of possibilities. Fixing an eyebrow issue can vary depending on how bad it is. For poorly shaped ones, it’s just a case of plucking and adjusting the style. You can draw on eyebrows if they’re too light, or get a permanent eyebrow tattoo. If you have a little click here, you can see a whole article I wrote about one type of eyebrow treatment called a Brow Lift. Check it out if you’re conscious of your brows and want to improve the way they look.

Your Body

This is a very vague point because there are so many elements of your body that cause self-esteem issues. Some people wish they weren’t so heavy, and think they’re fat. Others want to have a bigger bum or more toned legs. There are plenty of girls that want bigger breasts or slimmer arms. Most of, if not all, of these problems, can be solved with a healthy diet and exercise. Plus, as seen on Top9Rated, you can get natural breast enhancement products too. Whatever your body problems may be, there’s always a way to fix them and make you feel more confident when you’re stood naked in front of a mirror.

(Picture link: http://bit.ly/2fQ5eQY)

Your Hair

Your hair is another part of you that causes most low self-esteem issues. We want a thick head of healthy hair, but sometimes that’s not what we have. Thankfully, dealing with this issue is very easy. There are lots of natural hair treatments you can try, such as using coconut oil to condition your hair. You could also take vitamins like biotin to help strengthen your hair and make it look better too.

No matter what issues you have with the way you look, there are always ways to address them. Stop being so negative about your appearance, focus on the things you like about yourself, and improve the things you dislike. This will make you more confident, and you’ll feel so great for once. You’ll walk down the street with this newfound confidence, and it makes you feel elated.
