When Does Diet Supplementation Becomes Necessary?

When Does Diet Supplementation Becomes Necessary?

With myriads of confusing information out there regarding the use of nutrient supplements, and with a lot of different classes of multivitamins, minerals, and other uncountable types of food supplements available in food stores, it’s little wonder then that a lot of people are confused about when dietary supplement becomes necessary.

As the contemporary diet shifts more and more away from nutrient concentrated foods such as first-class animal protein and vegetables, more and more people are suffering from nutrient deficiency.

Even when people eat more foods that are densely packed with high calories and low nutrients from quality protein and fats, they are not reliable for ensuring that the body gets all its nutrients requirements.

With insufficient supply of nutrient in your food, you underperform, your DNA could be damaged, and you could age faster or be exposed to chronic disease conditions.

Scenarios when you need to take dietary supplements

  1. You munch up a standard modern Diet

Nearly all contemporary dairy, grains and legumes are not suitable for consumption. They just don’t provide the required nourishment to the body.

Most of these contemporary dairy products together with grains and legumes have low nutrient contents and cannot be easily digested by most individuals. Grains and legumes are made up of phytic acid and other compounds that can hinder proper absorption of nutrients and cause damage to the intestine.

Avoiding these foods are not the solution either, you could suffer from nutrient deficiency or suffer from protracted intestinal injury which could interfere with proper absorption of nutrients.

Also, modern day dairy can result to inflammation due to the presence of mycotoxins.

  1. Running down of soil nutrient

Inappropriate and reprehensible farming practices use up essential soil nutrients. When a piece of land is cultivated over and over again, it causes the soil to lose essential vitamins, minerals, and useful micro organisms quicker than they are replenished.

This leads to ultimate loss of soil nutrients to support the growth of plants. Fertilizers are made up of just enough nutrients to sustain the growth of plants till the harvest time. They don’t contain adequate nutrient to support optimal human health.

Again, a good number of plant foods are not eaten immediately they are harvested. They lie on shelves and counters for a long time before they are purchased and consumed. This reduces their nutrient quality and when human feeds on them they get malnourished as well.

Research evidence published in the Journal of Nutrition and Health showed that in UK the levels of copper in dairy products have declined to ninety percent, fifty-five percent in meat, and seventy six percent in vegetables. Copper is an essential nutrient that controls the body pathway like energy production and enhancement of brain function.

  1. Nutrient reduction in water

Some minerals in water are as well depleted because of modern method of water purification. The content of minerals in bottle water varies tremendously with that of tap water, with tap water commonly containing additional nutrients. A number of water filters eliminate essential minerals like magnesium.

  1. Diet low in calorie results in low Nutrient

Starving yourself by eating low a low-calorie diet implies you are eating less overall amount of micronutrients. The human body is structured to absorb huge amounts of nutrient-dense calories to fulfill the needs of the body. Constant diary restriction easily leads to malnutrition.

  1. Non-organic foods are made up of smaller amount of nutrients

Non-organic vegetables treated with pesticide have reduced concentration of polyphenols than organic ones. Polyphenols helps to fight against cancer. The reduction is due to the fact that the plant manufactures polyphenols to defend them against bugs and pathogens.

When they have been killed by pesticides, there would be no need for the plant to manufacture polyphenols. This results to a plant food that lacks polyphenols and adversely affects the human body and the brain function hen taken.

  1. Grain-fed Meat as opposed to grass fed meat

Any meat obtained from grain-fed animal contains less antioxidants, micronutrients, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins than grass-fed meat. Feeding herbivores with grains make them suffer from malnutrition which is transferred to humans who eats them.

  1. Contact with Toxin

Nutrients are required by the body to fight against toxin’s invasion. When you have more toxins in your body, you’ll require more nutrients to fight against the toxin. Supplements support the body’s ability to detoxify.

  1. Supplements needed to boost nutrient absorption among the elderly

Many scientific research shows that children require nutrients to boost growth, and the elderly require additional nutrients as a result of mal-absorption.  The elderly as well tend to take more medications which can obstruct their nutrient absorption. This implies that they require additional nutrients which make supplementation a great idea.

  1. Going physical boost nutrient requirements

Athletes frequently consider their engagement in constant exercise would help them stay healthy and strong. They frequently rebuff supplements as unnecessary but the truth is that engaging in massive exercise greatly exhausts your energy reserve.  Nitric oxide supplements for instance helps in muscle building and recovery as well as improving cardiovascular health. This is something you want to have in your reach if you’re into physical activities.

Thus, you’ll require extra nutrients to produce sufficient energy and get fully recovered. Being at risk of suffering from nutrients deficiency implies you need dietary supplement to stay optimally healthy.

  1. Supplement is required to boost your longevity

Although aging is a natural phenomenon, there are supplements that help to delay the aging process. So long as the supplement is effective without constituting any form of harm, taking it to boost longevity is a wise idea.

  1. To minimize cost and ensure better health

Occasionally, supplements cost lesser than real food. It is better to take high quality salmon oil than to purchase salmon fish. The fish oil is higher in omega-3s than farmed salmon. Farmed salmon also contain high toxins.

Different types of food supplement

When the body is suffering from nutrient deficiency, it cripples a lot of body functions. This condition puts the body in a susceptible situation where the immune system no longer functions optimally. This will predispose you to suffering from incapacitating or never-ending illnesses.

When your body is in this state, it is highly essential you supplement with nutritional supplements to ensure that your body gets all the nutrients it requires. Remember to speak with your doctor for advice on the best possible supplement that is suitable for your present state of health.

There are a lot of different types of dietary supplement you may need to consider for your health. These include the following:

Multivitamin supplements

The majorities of multivitamin supplements are made up of all or roughly the thirteen vitamins and fourteen minerals. Some of them are as well made up of herbs, fruit and vegetable extracts, and are normally available in the form of capsule, pill, grounded form or in liquid form. Potassium is an essential minerals that most people don’t get enough of, resulting into muscle cramps, this is a typical example of minerals that should be supplemented as much as possible.

Check to ensure that the multivitamin supplement you’re buying is made up of antioxidants that’ll protect your body from being damaged by free radicals.

It must also contain B vitamins that’ll boost metabolic process, boost the function of the immune and nervous system and as well assist in cell division, boost growth, and ensure maintenance of healthy hair, nails or boost energy levels.

The multivitamin must as well be composed of suitable proportion of vitamin D and calcium that’ll improve your bone health.

Dietary supplement that contains Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s)

Essential fatty acids are types of fats that the body requires for optimal function. It is referred to as good fat and cannot be manufactured by the body cells. The body thus, needs to take sufficient amount of them as food to function well.  Essential fats are classified into two main forms, the Omega-three and Omega-six fatty acids.

Omega-nine is as well useful to the body but is usually manufactured by the body. Hence, there is no need for supplementation.

Essential fatty acids are necessary to improve the cardiovascular and reproductive health. They also boost the immune and nervous function.

Protein dietary supplement

Protein dietary supplement is needed by the body for building and repairing of tissues. It as well helps in the formation of enzymes, hormones and a lot of other chemicals needed by the body. Protein is as well the base for the formation of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, hair, nails and blood. Just like carbohydrates, protein is a macronutrient and is required by the body in large amount for optimal functioning.

Regulation and safety of diet supplement

However, you must be cautious of where you buy your supplement. Ensure you use reputable and trust worthy vendor and don’t forget to read users review before you buy. The dietary supplements are regulated by FDA not as drugs but under a different form of food products.

Thus, FDA treats dietary supplements as special foods and does not review dietary supplements to ensure they are safe and effective before they are sold. However, FDA takes action against producers and marketers if the supplements they market are contaminated or contain falsified information after they have been sent to the market.

Also, the manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplement don’t need to get FDA approval before they start to sell the dietary supplements.

However, it is the responsibility of producers and distributors of dietary supplements to ensure that their products are safe and that their labeling depicts the true content of their product to avoid litigations after they have launched their products.

Conclusion

It is a great idea to obtain your entire nutrient from natural food products. But this is practically impossible as a result of these factors we have enumerated above. These factors are also complicated with our rapidly growing stress-ladden lifestyles that make it difficult to get all the vitamins and minerals required for optimal functioning of the body.

Therefore, you need food supplements to ensure you get all the required food nutrients. In fact, supplementing with high-quality vitamins, minerals, and herbs is the wisest steps you can take to stay healthy.

A Safe and Natural Detox for Your Body

By Blogger Jenny H.

A Safe and Natural Detox for Your Body

Without a doubt, our bodies are naturally equipped with all the necessary resources to detox without any kind of external aid. Having said that, our bodies haven’t always had to deal with the same external threats and conditions as they come up against today – including metal and plastic chemicals found on kitchen equipment or in food packaging, cigarette smoke and volatile organic elements found in air fresheners.

According to the Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 212 unwanted chemicals were found in the blood and urine samples of those who took part in the study. Therefore, it seems that knowing how to detox using safe and natural methods is useful to us in the world we live in today.

Safe methods for naturally detoxing your body

One of the safest and most effective ways of achieving a detox through diet is to give your liver and kidneys what they need to remain strong.

Liver and kidneys

The liver and kidneys are the two organs your body uses to naturally deal with toxins. The liver is a particularly clever organ that goes through two stages to achieve full detox. It firsts breaks down the toxic elements and then goes on to bind them to other molecules. To keep both your liver and kidneys functioning at their best, you need to consume foods rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. You also need to increase the levels of glutathione in your body. To do this you should increase the amount of dairy products, fish, meat and cheese that you consume on a daily basis.

Things to avoid

Cut alcohol and tuna out of your diet, choose filtered water over tap water and get away from the dangers of the city for a while – leaving car fumes, paint products and unwanted gases far behind you.

Don’t forget your skin

As it’s the largest organ in the human body, it really does deserve our time and attention. As a way of complementing the changes that you make to your diet, you can also spend more time in the sauna so that the harmful toxins lingering in your body can be steamed out of your system.

Detoxing methods that carry risks

Not all detoxing methods are backed by solid science. It’s important to thoroughly investigate the possible side effects of “detox-quick” solutions, as you could end up doing more harm to your body than good.

Emptying your colon

One such method to be wary of is the option to empty your colon. It’s true that the method has been around for a very long time, even dating back to ancient Greek and ancient Egyptian times, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s actually a good idea. According to physiologist, Steven Swoap, the process can alter the types of bacteria in your intestines and make it easier for new, perhaps unfriendly bacterial strains to settle in.

Similarly, The Journal of Family Practice identifies a number of known problems that have been caused by colon cleansing. These include cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting, blood poisoning and gas in the veins, which can sometimes be fatal.

Considering that not all detox methods are as safe and as natural as others, it’s a good idea to invest in methods that are linked to changes in diet and changes to your regular routine. That way, we’ll have the opportunity of seeing and feeling improvements without placing ourselves at risk.

How to Look Great at the Gym

By Guest Blogger Diana S.

How to Look Great at the Gym

Losing weight and staying fit is tough work and sometimes it’s hard to look your best when you’re covered in sweat from head to toe. But, if looking extra fly will motivate you to work out harder and more often, then you must try to get some new gym wear that will inspire you to hit the treadmill. The right gym clothes will not only make you look amazing but also make your workouts more efficient and easier. So, what to wear, what to wear?

Undergarments

Even though it looks super cute on you, that lace bra and underwear might not be the best gym clothes option. It certainly makes you feel sexy on a date night, but it will only make you feel uncomfortable at the gym. In general, no underwear will be as comfy during exercise as a sports bra and athletic panties. Sports bras provide some extra support, limit breast movement and pain, and typically come in light and breathable materials that help keep your skin dry. Men have it a bit easier here, just make sure your undies are comfortable.

Socks and shoes

Athletic socks should be your number one choice to wear during your workout because they’re made of light, synthetic materials that wick away sweat and don’t scratch your skin. No matter the length you prefer, sporting goods stores have all kind of athletic socks for you. When it comes to shoes, you should choose them according to your preferred activity. For instance, if you love to run, then getting cross trainers is just not a great idea, and if you’re an avid weightlifter, running shoes will not do the job. Don’t be scared to splurge some more money on high-quality shoes, otherwise, you’re risking injuries and all sorts of unwanted side-effects. But, generally, look for shoes that are light, comfortable, keep your feet cool and provide ample support.

Shirts

Both women and men have a wide variety of options here. Ladies usually opt for T-shirts, tank tops, long-sleeved shirts or sweatshirts for the gym. In general, gyms permit all sorts of tank tops, but halter tops and shirts that show excessive cleavage are usually frowned upon. Just to be sure, check your gym’s dress code to ensure which shirts are appropriate. Guys better avoid tiny tank tops, even if you’re a pro bodybuilder. We get it, you have a killer body, but obviously, you have an even bigger ego. Instead, get a high-quality sleeveless shell tank that will show off your arms and hint at your abs just the right amount. And as with all gym clothing, ensure your tops and shirts are made of light, stretchy fabric that keeps you cool and doesn’t limit your mobility. You can also check out some moisture-wicking options.

Pants and shorts

For many women, the only criterion when buying gym pants is that they match with their shirt. But, your foremost priority should always be to find shorts, yoga pants and sweatpants that are light, comfortable and allow a wide range of movements. Some ladies prefer elasticized biking-style shorts, while others favor the comfort and freedom they find in yoga pants. When it comes to the gentlemen, don’t try to make your swim trunks do your gym work. Instead, pick up a few pairs of men’s gym shorts that offer breathability and comfort.

Hair and makeup

If you feel too naked going to the gym without any makeup, then choose a sheer, light foundation, a couple of coats of waterproof mascara and pull your hair out of your face. It’s an easy and functional look that still allows you to look polished at the gym

Now that you know what to wear and what to avoid in the gym, there are no more excuses. Grab your gear and hit those dumbbells.

Doing These Things Regularly Will Make You A Natural Beauty

Doing These Things Regularly Will Make You A Natural Beauty

If you want to be a natural beauty, you need to make sure you get into a consistent routine. Doing the things in this guide regularly will make you glow from the inside out, not to mention feel great. You’ll soon realise that you don’t need to wear a ton of makeup or spend hours getting ready in the morning to look beautiful. Read on to learn what to do!

Get Your 5 A Day

It’s recommended that we all get 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day to stay healthy. Not only will it mean health in the long-term, it’ll mean looking and feeling great. Fruit and veggies are a great way to get our fibre intake up, as well as healthy carbs, and more color in our diets! Try to have a portion with each meal, and figure out healthy snacks you can have throughout the day. Fruit salad, vegetable sticks and hummus, and even vegetable rich foods like stews and stir frys are all brilliant examples. If you don’t currently ‘like’ vegetables, commit to trying one new one a week until you find something you like. It can take a little while for your tastes to change, but the more you cut down on junk and eat better, the more you’ll crave better foods.

Drink 3 Litres Of Water

People don’t tend to drink much water, and this leaves them feeling lethargic, amongst other things. Most people don’t realise that by drinking a large glass of water upon waking each morning, they can feel alert and energised almost right away! Add fruit to water to make it taste better, rather than cordials and things that can have bad ingredients. Drinking water with honey and lemon upon waking is a great alternative to coffee, and many amazing supermodels and celebrities swear by it too!

If you need motivation to drink water, you could download an app that allows you to track your water intake – some fitness trackers allow you to do this too. You can even carry a large bottle with you each day, and mark the times throughout the day on it, aiming to have drank that much by that time. You will eventually be drinking 3 litres of water naturally, and as your body gets used to it you won’t be making as many toilet trips.

Get Active

Getting and staying active will not only help you lead a better quality of life in the long run; it will make you look and feel incredible. You can better maintain and lose weight by staying active, and many people who exercise look younger later on in life. You don’t need to do hardcore workouts for this to be effective. You can simply make sure you walk a lot. Adding more steps throughout the day can be as simple as parking a little further away or taking the stairs rather than the elevator. Swimming, yoga, and pilates are all incredible forms of exercise too. Keep things interesting and varied and you’ll get into a good routine. Once you’re in a routine, it’s really tough to quit!

Eventually, you might feel like trying out a type of exercise that’s a little harder. As long as you always aim to improve, you’re going to look and feel great!

Say Bye To Dead Skin Cells

Dead skin cells can make the skin look dry and rough, on both the face and body. You should get rid of them regularly to make sure you’re glowing. Exfoliation can also keep the blood pumping healthily, as well as reduce lumps and bumps. Read up on reviews of the 10 best exfoliators so you find something that’s suitable for your face and body. The face needs a more gentle product, while the body can afford something a little rougher. There are products out there that aren’t 100% safe, and can actually rip the skin.

Once you’ve found a product that suits you, make sure you get into a frequency that works for you too.

Use A Silk Pillowcase

Silk pillowcases are incredible for all kinds of reasons. When it comes to your hair, they can help to retain moisture and prevent things like split ends from taking place. When it comes to your skin, it’ll reduce drag (unlike cotton pillows) helping you to wake up looking far more refreshed. They are perfect for helping the entire body retain moisture while getting a great night’s rest.

Take Your Vitamins

Vitamins aren’t always necessary; you certainly don’t need to take everything under the sun. However, taking a look at your diet and lifestyle and then selecting vitamins that suit you best is a good way to go about it. For example, if you exercise a lot, taking a fish oil supplement or a vegan alternative will help to keep your joints healthy and lubricated. A multivitamin is a good choice for just about everybody. If you’re a vegan or a vegetarian, make sure you look into suitable supplements, such as B12. Although these diets can have many great benefits on a person and the planet, you don’t want to develop any deficiencies or issues.

Focus On Self Development

Focusing on your own self development is a beautiful thing, and therefore will help to make you a natural beauty. How can you do this? Read books. Take courses. Follow your interests and passions. Don’t get stuck in a rut and become complacent. Being focused on your own development is one of the most incredible, attractive things you can do.

Start Smiling

Just because some of the biggest celebrities in the world refuse to smile doesn’t mean you should too. Smiling is far more attractive than a straight face, so make sure you do it more. The more you smile, the more you should find your mood lifted too! Smiling at a stranger always feels good and will no doubt make you more of a natural beauty.

Do you do some of these things already, or do you have your own routine that you feel makes you naturally beautiful? Leave your thoughts and comments below. Come back soon!

Strike a Pose: How Yoga May Combat Depression

Strike a Pose: How Yoga May Combat Depression

Depression may strike us at any given time, and women are twice as likely as men to suffer from it. Scientists are psychologists provide us with a whole platter of different reasons to this gloomy monster; while some of them point out genetic predisposition and hormonal imbalances to be the source, others point to psychological and sociocultural factors.

Regardless of its source, depression is hard to fight – and especially when you do it on your own. Exercise has proven to work wonders on our mind, though, and certain types seem to be more effective than others.

Why Yoga?

This ancient activity is a sequence of poses and is supposed to clear the mind to prepare it for meditation. Today, we focus more on the physical benefits of practicing – as well as celebrating the added benefits of a calmer and steadier mind. We’re looking at it from the other way around, in other words, where ancient yogis would see added strength and flexibility as a nice little bonus to a quiet and relaxed mind.

By combining these two benefits, the strength a yoga practice can give your body as well as the calm and meditative state we tend to practice in, you achieve a holistic view of your health where the mind, as well as the body, is in focus.

This is important to feel more connected, in general, and to be able to deal with chronic and daily stress.

Health is about more than activity and a peaceful mind, although this certainly takes you a long way. Make sure you eat a variety of food, mostly plants, and bathe your cells in quantities of water every day. Read up on a few AlgaeCal reviews if you’re an aging woman, as we all are, and keep up with the cardio to keep your heart healthy.

To stay strong and vigorous, you need to tackle the problems that are specific to your health; consider supplements if you’re not eating enough nutrients, and always consult with your doctor before taking anything new.

The best poses to combat depression

If you’re convinced, it’s time to roll out your mat and enjoy a deep and energizing breath. Some of the yoga poses are known for its abilities to increase your mindfulness and turn you inwards rather than outwards to bring you closer to yourself. Inversions are usually the best mind-boosting poses you can choose, such as the forward fold and head-to-knee forward bend.

Remember that any forward bend should be equaled out with a back bend, such as the cobra and bridge. If you’re not that advanced in yoga yet, try to modify your bridge by keeping it in a table-top style rather than a full bridge.

Other complicated inversions, such as the headstand and shoulderstand are also known for their healing effects – but again, don’t attempt these without having a yoga teacher around.

Holding these for around eight breaths or up to two minutes is good for both your mind and your body. Breathe slowly through your nose and keep the exhalations as long as your inhalations.

It might not make you instantly healthy, but keep it up and you’ll reap the benefits of your practice with a happy mind that’s ready to tackle the challenges of life

This is Why Your Brain Can’t Function without Sleep

By Guest Blogger Jenna J.

This is Why Your Brain Can’t Function without Sleep

Young man covering face with hand

Your brain is a complex system with just as many neurons in it as the number of stars in our entire galaxy. Each neuron is connected to others through a whopping 40,000 connections referred to as synapses by medical professionals. And yet, for many of us, it is the most overlooked organ in the body.

More than the body, it is the brain that needs sleep. All your body organs are cleaned of toxins and metabolites while they’re in their normal function throughout the day. It is the brain which has to wait for when you’re asleep to have its cleaning done. There’s other important stuff your brain needs to do while sleeping as well, which has bearing on your memory, health and immunity. Why then do we skip sleep?

Superstitions of Self Denial

A common motif in the annals and accounts of success has been that of spending nights in motivated labor. It’s only too visible in pop culture, for example, when Will Smith puts the kid to bed but works the entire night to correct a malfunctioning machine he intends to sell. Or, when in the legend of Achilles in the Iliad, he spends the night awake, plotting for revenge. We’ve never stopped to ask why we buy these myths. The Romans had a famous distaste for sleep, considering it a state of absolute debilitation and something to avoid to as much extent as possible.

It seems to be our hunger for success that makes us believe we can make hard sacrifices from our sleep to chase an ungraduated goal. “Well, as you know, there are 24 hours in every day. And if that’s not enough, you’ve always got the nights!”, as Ronald Graham the famous mathematician says. And yet, as we make cuts from our 24 hour day, we never have a quantified measure of success. Is $2400 a day a measure of success? Is it the awe of getting 24 people in the course of a day? Or are we chasing an elusive goal of paying off our debts in 24 months? If the answer to all these questions is no, what really are we chasing?

How poor sleep routs the brain

Despite no graduated standards, we deny ourselves sleep. If you skip an hour of sleep 5 days a week (and no, there’s no such thing as making up for it over the weekend), you’ve lost over a month’s worth of sleep at the end of the year. You can be sure it is detrimental to the brain.

To know what happens when you don’t sleep, let me tell you why the brain needs sleep.

  1. The brain generates toxins and metabolites like any other organ in the body during its course of activities throughout the day. While other organs can be cleaned by the body anytime, the brain gets its only major cleanup while you’re asleep. This is because sleeping allows brain activity to calm down and brain cells to shrink a bit. More ugly stuff can be washed out of the brain, and your brain doesn’t have to fight against this garbage to function the next day.
  2. A crucial part of memory retaining is the transfer of information from short term to long term memory, which, you guessed it, only happens when you’re asleep. Your brain sorts out information it gathered through the day and puts what’s important in long term memory, the rest being discarded. Without sleep, you’re going to have a hard time remembering things.
  3. Research shows your brain cannot make new brain cells to replace the dead ones when you’re sleep deprived. Take out neurons little by little for each day you spend in sleep deprivation, and suddenly the high number of nerve cells doesn’t seem all that insurmountable.
  4. Without adequate replenishment and cleaning, your brain as well as body are fighting a losing battle. Sleep and immune function are closely related, as studies point out. Low sleep means you’re going to be more susceptible to coughs and colds, as well as more dire infections. With disease comes monetary and mental exertion, which results in stress and further lack of sleep, making a self perpetuating cycle.

It’s not always your fault either. It can be the traffic on the street outside your house that’s keeping you from sleeping well with its noise, or the nightclub nearby. Many have trouble logging off the internet, and so their minds are alert to the sounds of any vibrations or notification tones it might hear, even in sleep. Sometimes, it might just be a smelly or dented mattress that’s not keeping you comfortable while you sleep, or the temperature of the room that’s all wrong.

Urgent Corrections to Follow

It can be hard to follow the 8 hour schedule, especially since it is not valid for everyone’s bodily needs. Just as many people wake up groggy from too much sleep as those who wake up under-rested. A rule of thumb is to allow yourself to wake up when you’re satisfied with your sleep. If you wake up groggy or have a slow brain day more often than twice a week, it can be that you’re not well rested.

Get thick blinds and invest in soundproofing to keep the outside noise outdoors. Clean your existing mattress or buy a better one you will easily get various mattress reviews online. Set the thermostat to a temperature your body is comfortable with when it’s resting. You can crank it up or down later. Most importantly, switch to airplane mode before flying off to dreamland.

Your brain needs its sleep to keep your body in order, as well as to make sure you don’t lose your job due to low performance, get a bad cold or get long term illnesses like depression or Alzheimer’s. It is worth the time to get adequate sleep.

5 Indicators Why You Might Need Rhinoplasty Revision

By, Dr. Vincent Marin

5 Indicators Why You Might Need Rhinoplasty Revision

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most complicated procedures performed in the cosmetic arena. As a result, it is one of the procedures where we see the highest percentage of revisionary surgery. Some surgeons even specialize exclusively in revisionary rhinoplasty surgery alone. Thus, it is very important to do your homework and choose your surgeon wisely to reduce the risk of needing a second operation.

  1. Too much or too little was removed from your nose. Most patients requesting a rhinoplasty surgery want a smaller and more refined nose. In years past, surgeons over aggressively removed cartilage and bone from the nose leaving a pinched appearance with a constricted airway. The situation frequently led to the need for revisionary surgery. Some surgeons who were too conservative also have left too much tissue behind. This is an easier situation to remedy, but still requires a secondary operation. The goal of a successful rhinoplasty is to remove just enough to enhance the appearance of the nose while still providing sufficient support to maintain an open airway. Every patient is different and an experienced surgeon is required to assess the situation and choose the most effective treatment.
  2. Rhinoplasty is a surgery of millimeters – literally. Every millimeter makes a difference in rhinoplasty, and thus even the smallest discrepancy can be evident after surgery. If the nose does not appear perfect on the operating table, or as close to perfect as one can make it, it is likely to become an issue after surgery. Thus, you want to choose a physician who appreciates the intricacy of rhinoplasty surgery.
  3. Scar tissue is frequently the enemy in rhinoplasty. Once a surgeon has finished his/her surgery, they lose control of the operation. What this means is that the presence of scar tissue can distort or pull on the underlying bone and cartilage framework after the surgery is complete. Thus, there can be warping or movement of the tissues as a result of scar tissue contraction. This is normally evident several months after the conclusion of your surgery, and is not normally a result of an improperly performed surgery. If this does occur, frequently a revisionary surgery is required.
  4. You are a perfectionist. We frequently see patients who are requesting a rhinoplasty to be very detailed in their assessment of what is wrong with their nose before surgery. As a result, they frequently will search out any abnormalities, no matter how slight, after surgery. No surgeon can get a perfect result, and almost certainly there will become imperfections in the nose after the conclusion of even the best rhinoplasty. The goal in rhinoplasty is a significant improvement in one’s appearance, better balance and refinement and achieving the patient’s aesthetic goals – not perfection. Thus, it is important to accept this fact prior to undergoing any surgical procedure as we as surgeons do not have magic wands.
  5. You may have chosen the wrong doctor. It is important to make sure that your doctor has significant experience in rhinoplasty surgery. Many doctors, even well trained plastic and facial plastic surgeons, do not get enough experience with rhinoplasty, and as a result, have a higher revision rate. Additionally, your doctor could be either not be Board Certified or Certified in the wrong specialty. In most states, ANYONE who is licensed to perform ANY surgical procedures can legally perform cosmetic surgery – as long as they went to a weekend course, pay a fee and have a couple procedures supervised. Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and Facial Plastic Surgeons rigorously train for 5-7 years to learn the intricacies of these procedures, detailed anatomy, the proper finesse, and the management of any complications.

Do your homework before you decide to have any cosmetic surgical procedure.

What Really Damages Your Skin?

What Really Damages Your Skin?

It’s surprising just how delicate skin can be. The skin on your body is responsible for protecting everything on the inside. It holds in moisture and helps to prevent germs, dirt, and bacteria from reaching essential organs. It will give you away, too. Your skin will reveal when you’re unwell, or not looking after yourself, by changing texture and color. It will even give away your age!

Of course, there are parts of your body where the skin is so thin it must be protected carefully. Your lips are just one area where special attention needs to be given. The reason for the skin being so thin is so that you have even greater sensitivity. And it also offers that great rouge color too!

So how can you protect the skin when it is fragile and delicate? And what are the consequences of damaging it? Here are just a few signs of damage to your skin, and how you can help your body heal again:

Cuts

Cuts can happen at any time anywhere. Your pet might catch you with a claw. Or maybe you caught yourself on a zipper. We cut ourselves chopping vegetables, and the pain of a papercut makes you appreciate the digital world so much more! Of course, there are deliberate cuts and incisions that we might have. Operations and surgery often require a cut or two, followed by stitches. You might have had a caesarean, or even keyhole surgery.

Sometimes, you don’t mind bearing your battle scars. But there are times when you wish you could just hide it. Scarred skin is different from the skin around the cut because it was produced differently. There are products like Dermefface FX7 that might help reduce the appearance of that scar tissue. This type of approach can help you feel less conscious about it. When a scar brings back bad memories, reducing its appearance can sometimes be beneficial in other ways.

Scrapes

What child hasn’t scraped their knee? Most kids have bumps and scrapes. It’s a sign of a healthy, active childhood. Sometimes it will bring on a teary, especially if it feels sore. A scrape literally scrapes off the top few layers of skin. These are often the toughest layers of skin, even for children. It means the newer, more sensitive and fragile layers of skin can be left exposed. A little bleeding is common, and sometimes it can produce a yellowy liquid that looks quite awful.

Taking care of a scrape is simple to do, but you might want to leave it open to the air to ‘dry out.’ Antiseptic cream or spray can initially sting so much it’s worse than the original injury! However, it’s worth using, especially if the scrape came from the ground or other dirty surface. It’s up to you if you dress this. Consider the open area’s vulnerability to additional abrasion or germs. Scrapes rarely scar, but the healed skin can sometimes feel or appear less smooth.

Stretch Marks

So many women wear their pregnancy stretch marks with pride. They are a great testament to an incredible experience. Of course, they can also be marks that bother others. It’s not just pregnancy that causes stretch marks. Weight gain, or simply growing rapidly can stretch the skin and leave marks.

Your circulation in that area can give them a more prominent appearance. Sometimes they are white and barely noticeable if your skin tone matches closely. Other times, they are red or silvery, especially in colder weather. This makes them much more noticeable and can make you feel quite self-conscious at times. Keep the circulation in the area healthy with gentle massage and exercise. You can also try body butters to offer the skin extra moisture. This is thought to help the skin retain more elasticity to cope with the stretch.

Acne

Every teen’s worst nightmare! However, acne can turn up at any time in life. While it is often caused by hormone changes, the health of the skin can degrade to prolong the infections and other problems we term as acne. As a teen, there are many medicated creams that can help reduce the inflammation and bring the pus under control. As an adult, these are often too strong and could cause further damage.

The scarring from acne isn’t just caused by trying to drain the affected areas with your fingertips (squeezing). Long-term infections like this fill cavities in your skin that are then left empty, leaving pockmarks. Some laser treatments have been developed to reduce the visibility of these problems. Dermabrasion can help smooth the skin too.

Boils

Boils anywhere on your body are incredibly painful. It is often best left to a doctor to lance and drain them, to reduce the spread of the germs and prevent infection. Sometimes antibiotics are required. Some boils on the face, neck, ear or head can be quite dangerous, so see your doctor.

The trouble with boils is they stretch the skin a lot. Once they are drained, you might be left with excess skin and a scar from the cut. As boils often appear in places others can’t see it might not bother you. But if it is a problem, it’s important to care for this skin. Keep it clean and uncovered if possible. Change any dressings as directed. When it has healed, keep it moisturized without letting it get oily.

Burns

Minor burns in the kitchen often don’t bother us once we’ve taken the heat out of it under a cold tap. More serious burns should be treated by a medical professional. The heat that is trapped under the skin causes blisters. If these burst, germs, and bacteria can get inside and cause nasty infections. This is why you should never pop blisters!

Eventually, the fluid inside a blister will drain away on its own. It may be painful while it is there, and may leave some faint mark when it has gone. However, the burnt area itself is likely to scar. Dry burns can look like any other scar – white and stood proud from the skin. Scalds or chemical burns can vary in color and texture. It’s important these are treated by your doctor, and then follow their recommendation for a cream application.

Cysts

Small white lumps in the skin might be cysts or milia. They are often hard and round, and firmly attached deep in the skin. Removing them can cause bleeding, infection and permanent damage to that area of skin. It’s possible they are caused by old, dead skin cells grouping together if they are not sloughing away naturally. In some areas, particularly around the eye, they can be a sign of high cholesterol. Check with your doctor or dermatologist.

Not to put too much pressure on yourself

It’s so easy to pile on the pressure when it comes to losing weight. After all, you might have a specific goal in mind of how much weight you want to shift, and when you want to lose the amount by. After all, it might be a particular vacation or event you are losing weight for. Therefore, you can try extra hard to ensure you shift the weight. But if you are putting too much pressure on yourself, you are going to struggle to shift the pounds. After all, stress can make your body produce more cortisol. And this can make you very hungry, so you will keep eating lots due to this stress. Therefore, you need to reduce the pressure on yourself to ensure you do start losing weight. It will put your body back in order to enable you to start losing the pounds.

Everybody is different

A lot of girls follow others when it comes to losing weight. For instance, they see their friends quickly shifting the pounds so want to follow their lead. Or they see their favorite celebs losing weight quickly, and they can often try their diet. But it’s so important to remember that every girl is different. Therefore, just because your friend might be suddenly shifting the pounds quickly, you might not be the same. After all, it all can depend on your age, height and fitness level when you are trying to lose weight. And that celeb you aspire to be like might have an entirely different body shape to you. So she might find it a lot easier to lose weight. Therefore, remember that you need to lose weight in your own way. You might want to find a program which is right for your body. You can look online to find ones which can be customized like the Venus Factor weight loss program.
