4 Easy Ways To Save Money In The Garden

We’re all looking for ways to save money and stick to our budget and usually, we start with the home. If you can find ways to reduce your energy bills in the home and spend less on maintenance, you’ll save yourself a lot of money. But have you ever thought about how much money you’re spending on the garden? Most people don’t but when you add it up, you’ll be surprised just how much it’s costing you to maintain your outside space. Luckily, you can do these simple things to save money around the garden.

Reduce Water Usage

Watering the garden is one of the biggest expenses, especially if you’ve got a lot of plants out there. It’s always a good idea to reduce your water usage for environmental reasons anyway, but it will also save you a lot of money out in the garden as well. The best thing to do is to plan your watering properly and only water when you actually need to. That means you should plan around the weather and let the rain do the hard work for you where possible. You should also look into drip irrigation systems that deliver water directly to the root and use way less water than a hose or sprinkler system.

As well as finding ways to cut the water that you use, you should start collecting rainwater as well because it won’t cost you anything. Get some water tanks out in the garden and you’ll see that they soon fill up in the winter. You should have more than enough water to look after all of your plants and it’s completely free.

Make Your Own Compost

Plants need good quality compost if they’re going to get the nutrients that they need to thrive, but it’s costing you money if you’re buying it every year. The thing is, there’s really no need because it’s not that hard to make your own compost out in the garden. You’ll just need to use food scraps from the kitchen so all you need to pay for is the compost bin and that’s it.

Propagate Plants

A lot of people don’t know about propagating plants which is a shame because it’s a great way to save money on buying new plants every year. When you propagate a plant, you split it and then replant it so that they multiply. That means you can buy a few plants and eventually fill the whole garden. If you learn how to propagate plants, you’ll save so much money on buying them in the future.

Use Citrus Peel For Pests

Getting rid of pests is important, otherwise, they’ll eat all of your plants. But you don’t need to be spending money on pesticides and slug repellent because there is a cheap natural alternative. Citrus peels contain chemicals that repel or kill pests so they can be used instead of your normal pesticide. That means you’re not putting potentially harmful chemicals out in the garden either.

You’d be surprised how much money you could save out in the garden by making these simple changes.
