It can be easy to buy and do everything through massive multinational corporations and not bother with small, local businesses. However, these same businesses need your support, and there are plenty of reasons to use them over their corporate competitors. Here are some reasons why you should use local goods and services.

Fewer Miles Travelled

If you care about the planet, being eco-friendly and reducing carbon emissions, then you should go local. Local good such as locally grown food has far fewer miles travelled. This means that it hasn’t been on a boat, plane, train, or truck to make its way to you. This also probably means that it is much fresher and has far fewer chemicals on it to keep it fresh. Locally produced goods are also the work of much smaller teams who love what they do, rather than a faceless corporation. There might be a slight premium on these kinds of products, but they are often of a higher quality and are made with a lot more attention and care. Often locally made goods are made by hand rather than being mass produced in a factory. This also means that they are more unique. If you care about any of those things, then you should buy locally made goods.

They Know The Area

The benefit of buying locally is that the people you are getting a good or service from know the area. If you are hiring movers, then you want to look up local moving services in the area. They will know the best way to transport your things to or from your home, won’t get lost and if you are moving into an area, they will be able to tell you about it. The same is true for other kinds of good or service. Due to the fact that these people live and work locally, they know the area well and can provide advice or tips based on this. On the other hand, larger companies do not know about specific areas and won’t be able to give you that same level of care and attention. For example, if you are buying a car from a local dealership they will be able to tell you how this car will perform on local roads and streets. This might mean that certain cars are better or worse for you depending on where you live. You might need a 4×4 over a city car, and the will be able to advise you on this. A large company can give you the benefits of each, but not in the context of where you will use it.

Build A Relationship

This is one of the best reasons to buy locally. You get to build a relationship with the people you are buying from. For example, if you regularly go into a local grocery store then you will get to know the staff and owner of the store and get to know them. This adds a personal touch to each visit, and it can be a way for you to make friends in a new area and get to know where you are living. If you are buying your groceries from a large company that you won’t get this as they have too many employees and won’t be able to treat you the same way.
