How to Properly Care for Hair Extensions

In today’s age of countless styles and ways to present yourself to the world, we want to take full advantage of all the options we have. And if we’re being honest – how else are we supposed to meet all of the ridiculous expectations the world has? One of those advantages is hair extensions: an easy way to change up your hairstyle in a moment, as well as add volume and length to your hair without the expensive, harsh treatments. But hair extensions are an investment, and just like any other, they need care if you want them to last you a long time. So, let’s see what are the proper ways of taking care of your extensions.

Brush them out

There are two most popular styles of hair extensions: clip-in and sewn-in. If you are using clip-in extensions, you should take them out every night before you go to sleep and brush them out thoroughly. Be gentle when brushing them so that you don’t damage the hair. If you are wearing sewn-in extensions, brush your hair every night all the same, and then loosely braid it or wear soft pigtails, to stop the hair from tangling up.

Wash them regularly

This really only applies to clip-in extensions, since sewn in extensions will be washed whenever you wash your hair. A lot of people think that they don’t need to wash their extensions so often, since they remove them every regularly, or, on the other hand, think that they need to wash them every time they wear them. Depending on how often you wear your extensions, you should wash them anywhere from once a week to once per month. It’s important to remember to always thoroughly brush and detangle the hair before washing it. Next, submerge it in a sink of lukewarm water and use a little bit of paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo, lathering it up and rinsing off. If you prefer, you can apply a little bit of conditioner and treat it as you would your own hair. Don’t use too many products at the same time because you risk damaging or over-moisturizing the extensions.

Style & store

After washing the hair is ready to dry, and stylists recommend to always let the hair air-dry. This might be difficult, especially if you are wearing non-removable extensions, but letting your hair dry on its own is the most harmless way of drying it. After that comes the time to style it, and you might want to style your hair differently each time you wash it. Generally, stylists warn to avoid heat, since it is your hair’s worst enemy, but, if you are using high-quality clip in human hair extensions, and protecting them with some heat spray, you can use low heat tools to curl or straighten the hair. As far as storing the extensions is concerned, you should always store them clean, dry, brushed and ready to use, or you might be met with a moldy mess the next time you want to use them. Store them in an airtight container that fits them perfectly, because you want to avoid the hair getting tangled in a small box or damp from the moisture in the air.

Hair extensions are a great way to change up your look and effortlessly add some volume to your hair. You can use them daily to extend and style your hair, or for special occasions, if your hair is lacking in length or volume for a certain hairstyle you want to try. If you are planning on using them for the first time for a special occasion, either go to a professional or try to create the look at least once before the event, just to make sure you get the hang of it before the big night.
