Summer is now upon us. For half of the population, that means short sleeves and sun-tanning. However, not all of us are that lucky. To many, summer is a time of blocked noses, streaming eyes, and antihistamines.

Hay fever can be horrible, and often it can feel like you’ve built up a resistance to your medication. Thankfully, there are plenty of home remedies that you can use to make your summer months less about hay fever and more about beach fever. Try these before you go to www.RxOutreach.org/your-comliance-partner for your next prescription.

Honey

We all have a jar of honey in our cupboards. It’s tasty and great for alleviating hay fever symptoms. It’s thought that the pollen in the honey desensitizes the body to other kinds of pollen in the air. Just through having a teaspoon of honey in the morning, you can start fighting back against hay fever. Besides, honey is good for the body in general, so it certainly won’t hurt.

Orange Juice

Keeping with the morning theme, a glass of orange juice is not just one of your five a day, but also packed full of Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Vitamin C boosts the body’s immune system, and bioflavonoids are nature’s antihistamine and decongestant. Another way to get more bioflavonoids into your body is through eating other citrus fruits, such as lemons and grapefruits.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is another great home remedy. Of course, just drinking the tea by itself is great, but you can get twice the amount of alleviation from it if you apply the tea bags to your eyes. By letting the tea bag cool in the fridge for about half an hour, you can apply it as a compress to your eyes, giving you relief from inflammation. Of course, you should use a different tea bag for each eye, to reduce the risk of infection.

Garlic

Unfortunately for those who hate the taste of garlic, and those who live with a hay fever sufferer, garlic is mostly effective against hay fever when consumed raw. If you’re concerned about the odour, and the social ostracisation that comes with it, many health food shops offer odourless garlic tablets. Thankfully, you can prepare for hay fever by consuming more garlic in the run up to the hay fever season – so, by putting an extra clove or two of garlic in your Bolognese or chili, you can set yourself up for a more painless summer. The same is true for onions, which contain quercetin, another of nature’s antihistamines.

Petroleum Jelly

By spreading a thin layer of petroleum jelly inside your nostrils, you can physically stop the pollen from entering your nasal passages. It gets stuck on the Vaseline, so never gets the chance to make your eyes stream or your nose run.

There are dozens of home remedies for hay fever, so if you suffer with it, try as many as you can, especially in combination with each other. You deserve it!
