Don’t Let Unwanted Intruders Spoil The Holidays!

When it comes to our homes, we should feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, from time to time, we may have to deal with unwanted intruders. Here are some tips to help you protect your home during the holidays.

Preventing burglaries

We all want to feel safe in our homes. Sadly, there are people out there who are on the lookout for easy pickings. Sometimes, it’s impossible to prevent burglaries. But there are lots of things you can do to try and deter thieves and make your home’s defenses harder to breach.

Effective deterrents

You’ll often find that thieves are put off breaking into certain homes just by looking to them. If you have a burglar alarm, CCTV or security lights, these make the job a lot harder. Electric gates, dogs, and cars in the drive can also deter thieves.

Making life more difficult

Open windows and doors are an invitation for robbers. If all the windows and doors are locked, it’s much more difficult to break into a property. Make sure you lock up before you go out or you go to bed. Never leave the keys in view or by the front door. Keep them on your person. Hide valuables and anything that has sentimental meaning.

Keeping your home safe while you’re away

If you’re going away for the holidays, ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for you. Cancel any deliveries, and leave a light on. Keep one car parked in the drive. Ask a friend or family member to pop round and collect the mail every few days.

Deterring pests

Unwanted visitors don’t just come in human form. Our homes are also enticing bases for all kinds of critters and creatures. It’s not always possible to prevent pests from entering, but there are steps you can take.

Keeping your home clean

Pests are often drawn to smells and the lure of leftovers. Make sure you clean up after cooking and store food in airtight containers. Don’t leave dirty pots on the side, or trash bags in the kitchen. Take the garbage out and ensure that bins are sealed. Mop the floors and wipe down the surfaces.

Plugging the gaps

Pests like mice and rats often enter through cracks and gaps in the walls, window frames, and doors. If you notice holes, patch them up using sealant or filler. This makes it much more difficult for them to gain entry.

Acting quickly

If you spot signs of a mouse, rat, ant or cockroach infestation, act quickly. The longer you leave it, the worse it will become. You could use traps and chemicals, such as insecticides. However, it’s often best to search online for control de plagas or pest control firms. Experts use effective techniques to exterminate pests rapidly.
