1. Rethink stairs

In most homes, the space under the stairs is woefully wasted; it’s just a walled in area that’s forgotten about. Instead, you can turn that area into a playroom, reading nook, nifty storage closet or any number or even a small powder room. After all, who wouldn’t like the addition of an extra half bath?

2. Think about platform storage

Besides adding visual interest to a room, platform storage is a great way to squirrel away little used items, like Christmas decorations. Remember, homebuyers today want more storage space than ever, so this addition is sure to pay you back.

3. New windows

It’s really incredible how many different styles of windows are on the market today. Don’t be afraid to be bold. Just make sure that you polish the look with a great window treatments, like polywood indoor shutters.

4. Go for a walk in shower

If you’re lucky enough to have a large bathroom, check out ditching shower curtains and just go for a walk in shower. It’s a dramatic effect that will greatly increase your home’s value. Of course you will probably be sacrificing a bit of privacy if you opt to go with a walk in shower, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

5. Install toe kick drawers

The cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom probably have what are known as a toe kick: a recessed area under the cabinet door. However, that toe kick can be replaced for a drawer, giving you more storage space than ever.

6. Remove a kitchen wall

In the recent past, kitchens were generally walled off, creating many awkward and small spaces in your home. Knocking a wall out makes your home feel larger by creating an open floor plan. Opening up the kitchen to the living room can make a cramped living room feel more spacious. While this may not be an easy project, nor the easiest project to complete, it’s certainly one of the most worthwhile.
7. Create an attic bedroom

Would you like an extra bedroom in your home? Look into turning your home’s attic into a bedroom. This remodel generally doesn’t cost as much as you think, but it gives you a lot more square footage. Just be sure that you plan for how the space will be heated or cooled.

Remember, whether you bought a turn of the century historic home, or a space from the 70’s that screams, “flower power,” you really can turn your house into a dream space. Just identify what in your home doesn’t work for you and find a solution.
